I guess this might be an unpopular opinion, but I thought the I-Landers outshined the Grounders in the vocal performances. It might just be because I have a tendency to focus a lot on technicality in singing, it's why I mostly prefer studio versions of songs over live ones. However, there are some live performances that I just can't get out of my head, and that move me so much that I prefer them over the studio version. Generally these performances don't have a lot of technical mistakes either, so I don't know if I can really compare them to this, but I could feel that same vibe with the Grounders' performance, with Sunoo in particular. That made it very difficult to decide on my favorite performance. Plus I had to take into consideration that Heeseung and Geonu have had longer training periods than Daniel and Sunoo, so they had more time to technically perfect their vocals. In a way, I feel like that gives the Grounders an edge over the I-Landers because they have more room to grow and show their potential. I think I ended up choosing I-Landers though because I felt that they already had both technicality and emotion in their performance. I was actually really impressed by Geonu as well as Heesung, although he didn't show as much emotion I felt like he still stood out on his own. But I actually have no idea who's gonna win, it really depends on what the producers value more. For me the vocal mistakes in the Grounders' performance took me out of it a bit, but for the judges and obviously many others their emotional delivery was obviously enough to cover for that. Lmao I feel like I'm rambling now so I'll stop soon, I just wanted to add that I do value emotion in a performance, but if it has mistakes in the vocals it just takes my brain a longer time to process those mistakes and connect to the performance emotionally. I'm definitely not trying to say that if there are any mistakes in a performance then it is bad, it's just how my brain works. It's frustrating for me too 😅. I wonder if anyone else feels like this?

2 hours went in a blink of an eye 😁. As usual I’m rooting for Sunghoon Jake and Jungwon 💜

Heeseung won my heart in Butterfly. He was mesmerizing. I re-watched his performace of Boss in Ep 1 and this guy is already an IDOL. That said, Sonoo and Daniel completely melted my heart as a duo singing Save Me. I was screaming, clapping and crying. Daniel totally suprised me. I've said it before, Sunoo is Mr. Sunshine off stage, but on stage he gives intense performaces. His visuals, dance moves and voice - he really has it all. My prediction is that Grounders won the vocals and somehow, I feel like they will win it all forcing the 6 member switch. I thibk that would be more intersting because the 6 that move up will make up a high % of the final debut group.

I also think that Sunoo needs to prove himself to Heesung and Kay, because the two are the obvious front runners. Kay actually sent him down to ground because he said he wanted him to work harder, despite his high score. Heesung was really watching Sunoo and I think he was impressed. I also re-watched his performance in Crown and he totally killed it. Hes such a natural - just like your comaprison to Jimin - and I think that is why he shines so much for me. He reminds me of my sweet BTS bias as well as the cutee Beomgyu.

My Ep 4 list 1. Sunoo, 2. Heeseung, 3. Jungwon, 4. Sunghoon, 5. Jake, 6 ,Kay, 7. Daniel💜

I totally agree about Jake and had that incredible first impression from the very beginning when he was walking into I-land and even when he was sitting watching all the other applicants walking in. He simmers and i feel like he will only get better exponentially.

I think butterfly is more challenging vocally.

Hi guys i have question. Were can i watch episode 5 with her? She said that she will stream it, but i couldnt find out were🤷‍♂️?

mistywolf the dragon rider

I know that the episodes are streamed live on YouTube on the Bighit channel, but I don't know what time they are aired. If you miss the livestream, you can watch it on Viki. There will be some ads but it's not too bad.

I wanted to know if you had to list their first audition performances how would it be ordered, I feel like those for me really made an impact on my top 12, so I was wondering if they did for you guys too? Also you guys made K and Heeseung make it on my top 12☺️

It’s so nice hearing other’s opinions so thank you so much for trusting us with your guys point of views, me and my friend also call everyday to talk about kdrama reviews but somehow always end up talking for hours on hours about I-LAND🥚

I LOVED this! Thank you! Especially the ending made me laugh so much! Egg-throwing! So... in the middle of watching this I realised I should've taken notes, too, 'cause I forget what I wanted to say. Overall, I think I agree with everything you two said. So, I'll just leave it at that, haha. As mentioned before in my other comment, GROUND is my choice for the vocal performance and Daniel was my fav out of the 4 vocally. But that's personal preference (not taking away anything from the others, especially Heeseung). I can try to do the TOP12, but that can so easily change. Only a few hours left until episode 5 airs, OMG! 1. Sunoo (just cause he was the first, but I think...) 2. Daniel (... these two are both tied for the #1 spot) 3. Jungwon 4. Sunghoon 5. Jake 6. Heeseung 7. K 8. Jay 9. Ni-Ki 10. Geonu 11. Jaebeom 12. Nicholas Well, I tried... but I really wanted to add Hanbin, too. I feel it's so unfortunate that the show didn't really show the other participants as much (and what they're able to do). If I would have focused solely on their personalities, Jaebeom and Nicholas would've been much higher on the list. Just saying. If I remember any of my other thoughts, I'll just add another comment later... maybe. I hope you do this more often, I really like listening to you two. =) Although I do comment loudly if I agree or something. xD Anyway, thank you again for this! (^____^)

I agree that butterfly may required more vocal range than save me but I think ground had a bit more challenging choreo and since it was kind of an acoustic ver. of save me they still showed off their vocals skill

Jungwoon and Taki did have the same amount of votes, but Taki got a higher individual score from the judges, thus Jungwoon was eliminated.

WOOOOW! Guys, I couldn't believe I just LITERALLY finished a two hour + plus video about two sisters discussing about a idol survival show!!! I am not even complaining, I'm just SHOOOKETH! Hahaha! Thank you for this honest discussion and I'm happy to hear auntie pilbug's thoughts on this show too!! Well after I finished this full-length discussion class, I re-watched the vocal stages several times and came to the conclusion that I definitely prefer Save Me over Butterfly. Here’s the reason why. All four contestants proved that they are gifted vocalists although each of them has their own unique style, and it was very difficult for me to say who’s better than who just by their vocal skills. So while listening to the songs again, I paid attention to the delivery of lyrics. And as for that, I had to give the top spot to Daniel. From the moment he started his line with ‘Why is it so dark’, the way he delivers the meaning of the lyrics stole my heart. He managed to control the tension in pronouncing each word, even down to each syllable and perfectly match it with the meaning of the lyrics. And I think I can safely say that as a native Korean speaker. You could see that he totally understood the emotional development and coherency of this piece from one line to the next. When he went ‘그 손을 내밀어줘 Save me’, that was the words coming out of a mouth of whom is shivering in despair and desperately waiting for a hand. Butterfly performance was vocally impeccable and touching, perhaps better than Save me in that aspect, but I felt like they were singing out ‘lyrics of a song’, while the other two were literally talking to me “Save me. I need your love before I fall.” Of course all of these are based on how I felt and I do not think I have the correct answer or the ultimate objective standards or anything. So here’s my question to you mama and auntie, and perhaps anyone who’s kind enough to read my comment. Which do you think plays more important role in moving the audience through music: the vocal sound itself, or the delivery of the narrative?

Ok but seriously in my humble opinion, vocal delivery is SOOOOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT. But without understanding the emotion of the song PLUS being able to deliver that feeling COMPLETELY I don't think you're a true artist. I think delivery as a whole can be weighted 55/45. Tone pitch and power plays such a crucial role but without delivery you will never cross that line into MAGIC.

I completely agree with you about the I-Landers technical singing. This they (esp Heeseung IMO) they perfected. I understand that it was a vocal competition so I suppose I-Landers did do better in that regard. However, I cannot shake the fact that the Grounders were a more complete team and their voices were really good too. I actually thought the at times shakiness in their voices worked in favor of the song's message and when combined with their powerful dancing I had to choose them! Gahhh I am actually very torn every time I think about these performances! Thank you for your comment and well thought out opinion!! <3

Do you think it would be fair if they had a rap representative unit as well? Because I was kind of surprised that they didn't.

I really enjoyed your discussion. It feels like I'm hanging with my friends. After university, I feel with life and work in the way that I don't really get the chance to be part of these types of conversations (you know just fun shows), so thank you for letting me part of your discussion. My top 12 after episode 4 are: 1. Sunghoon 2. Daniel 3. Jake 4. Geonu 5. Sunoo 6. Heesung 7. Nicholas 8. Jungwon 9. Jaebom 10. K 11. Jay 12. Hanbin (13. Nicki) My question to you is do you think it is better to have less than 12 members for debut? For me, I think 7-9 is a reasonable number for the final debut group. Even though there are many talented trainees, I think 12 is quite hectic. With 12, I already know the fans will cause issues with the line distribution and who shines the most. Plus, with less members, I believe the trust and team work among the members will be much stronger.

I’m so glad to be part of this new patron; always ready for your reactions from BTS to TXT to I-Land. You are definitely the best and I’m always looking forward to all these insights and content; can’t wait to see more💜As for the performances, I analyze the music from an overall perspective and honestly even if I-land had the vocals there could have been something more, thus the ground really pulled through it brings you more emotion like it really felt like a BTS vibe

NG

My top 12 currently is: 1. Jake 2. Daniel 3. Jay 4. Sunoo 5. Jungwon 6. Heeseung 7. K 8. Geonu 9. Niki 10. Sunghoon 11. Nicholas 12. Youngbin To start out with first impressions, I think I was very much on the same page as Christy in many ways. The Crown performance was by far my favorite (not just because I love TXT and the song), but because Sunoo, Jake, and Youngbin really embodied the vibe of the song so you couldn’t help by smile watching them. I think Jake and Sunoo stood out a bit more than Youngbin for different reasons. For Sunoo, his adorable expressions matched more with the delivery of the members of TXT (specifically Soobin) and I think the sound of his voice matched the song perfectly. However, Jake was my #1 after the song because I just saw star potential in his expressions and I just had a feeling that with more practice and development, he would grow to be a real star on the stage (like the type you can’t take your eyes off of). Also, I thought his singing was good, which people don’t really mention at all. People usually just say he’s good looking or has potential, but I do think after the first impression performances, he was one of the few contestants whose voices I clearly heard because the poor song choices/line distribution and bad performance editing left me not knowing what most sounded like. I was also so endeared by him waiting to meet people. He was practicing how to introduce himself in Korean and asking Youngbin if they should shake the others’ hands which I thought was so cute. I just loved his friendly awkwardness so much. He did slip up for Into the I-Land, but I think he really brought it for Fire. The energy and facial expressions were so eye-catching. Overall, I agree with nearly everything you both said about all the others guys as well. I never thought I’d get so attached, but I am and I know my heart is gonna be hurting over these kids. As for questions, because voting is on-going, there is something that’s really weighing on my mind that I’m curious your opinions on. Sunoo is high on my list. I love him: he’s an amazing human being and I really like his voice as well. But I’m so worried that the I-Landers (most of the people I like and want in a final group) have voted him off twice even though he’s talented. It concerns me that he’s not clicking with the group in a way that I ultimately want the final group to. I’m still voting for him, but I am torn about it because there are other people in my top 12 that I’m not voting for who may not be as charming as Sunoo, but they have talent, potential, and clearly get along well with the others. I feel like I’m constantly going back and forth with myself between who I want and who I feel is a better match for the team. Do you have any thoughts about this?

Anonymous

Jay is a pillar of the show for me. If he wasn’t there, I would’ve had like 20% of interest I have right now. I would have been like: “Oh, this one is talented and this one is talented, it’s all so nice, I’ll probably wait till their debut and be a fan of a group when it’s complete”. I understand how Jay can be not in someone’s top ten. He’s a good dancer — but K and Niki are better. He’s not the best vocalist and in a performance he can be outshined by his teammates. We can assume he can rap, but we never heard him. He’s beautiful, of course (and I still think his jawline looks just like JK’s), but so are others. In terms of skills, Jay isn’t irreplaceable. But at the same time, there is something very unique, I think — his strong personality. He has a certain flare, which, added to the final lineup, can create a truly one-of-a-kind group. He really shines in behinds — he’s caring, he’s stubborn, he’s funny (I swear, he and Sunoo are walking memes). His "This room has all the babies, I don't wanna wake them up” is forever in my list of the most endearing moments. I don’t know, I just really want to see how he grows and spreads his wings.

Anonymous

Also I’m kinda conflicted about Seon. Maybe there is a case of extra evil Mnet editing, but he never shined as much as other trainees? But at the same time all of them go to him to talk if anything happens? They trust him so much, maybe we should trust them?

theGeekOutGirl

I don't have an order to this list because I really don't feel like 4 episodes is enough for me to really get an idea of their skills, personality, or group dynamic lol. But these are the ones who stood out to me so far Jay, Jake, K, Taki, Sunoo, Sunghoon, Heesung, Daniel, Hanbin, Jungwon, Jaebum, and Niki. Tbh, everyone is talented and I'm hoping we see more of everyone.

I just realised - going back to my own reply to see what I wrote - I actually got the TOP 9 here, wow, hahaha. Sorry, I'm listening to Into the I-LAND, I&credible and Calling (Run to You)... and I'm really getting so emotional again. WHAT A JOURNEY! Is it weird I kinda wanna rewatch all the episodes again? Wait, why do I wanna hurt myself?! T-T
