From Adal:

Hey Future Lizards!

Had a really wonderful start to 2023 with lots of quick trips. I went to Atlanta to puppeteer Statler for a Muppet themed wedding at the Museum of Puppetry and got to heckle the attendees from a balcony. Absolute dream come true. I took my sister to London for her birthday and went back to see The Burnt City three more times. I’m absolutely obsessed so please let me know if you’ve been so we can chat experiences. We also saw a wonderfully charming new musical called HEX at The National Theatre and had a top notch meal at Manteca (if you’re looking for great pasta in London). San Francisco is always a blast and had a wonderful time doing both shows and getting to catch up with friends. Thank you to everyone who came out to the shows and especially to the folks who were generous enough to bring gifts! Lastly I just came back from Dallas where I went to visit my dad and half-siblings for a few days with Jemma. My dad cooked a middle eastern feast (including my favorite dish; maqluba) so it was a big success.

For upcoming travel; I’m heading out on a cruise to Mexico in a couple hours and then sometime in the coming months Jemma and I are going to Australia to visit some of her family (please send me any recommendations you have!) and plan to either pop over to New Zealand or finally set foot in Japan after our 2020 trip fell through. VERY excited however that shakes out.

Other than that I’m hoping to get some work done around the house and chip away at a few projects I’ve put on the back-burner.

Here’s what I consumed in January:

TV:

  • The Last of Us - Murray Bartlett immediately makes any show better
  • Poker Face - John Darnielle popping up made me guffaw
  • Cunk on Earth - Diane Morgan is the best. She’s in my top 3 people I’m dying to have guest on the podcast.
  • Extraordinary - hilarious new britcom about superpowers (or the lack of) on HULU. Please check it out
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15
  • Copenhagen Cowboy
  • Celebrity Jeopardy - Brendan Hunt is so weird and fun to watch
  • Extraordinary Attorney Woo
  • My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with Volodymyr Zelenskey
  • Mo
  • The Legend of Vox Machina season 2
  • Mayor of Kingstown season 2
  • Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure - I love that little yolk

Movies:

  • Avatar 2: The Way of Water - JPC, Casey Toney and I saw this in 4DX and it was VIOLENT. I don’t know if some teenager snuck in the booth and turned the machine up to horse on cocaine but watching this 3 hour movie felt like sitting on top of a machine that wanted us OFF of it. That being said; we had the time of our fucking lives.
  • Banshees of Inisherin
  • The Menu
  • The Sound of Metal
  • RRR
  • The Lost City
  • Bros.
  • Black Adam
  • You People
  • Tom Papas: What a Day!

Other Stuffs:

  • Been enjoying The Rest Is History podcast and Off Menu podcast (especially the Rafe Spall episode)
  • Jemma got me a class at a Bartending ‘college’ near us and now I have way more confidence in using a shaker and being able to muddle, strain and garnish. Look out future guests to my house! Daddy knows how to not fuck it up!
  • Read Hollow Kingdom - legit funny book about the end of the world and a crow named Shit Turd.
  • I was a recent guest on Bigfoot Collectors Club podcast and had a hoot talking about cryptozoology, aliens and ghosts! Please check it out!
  • I started playing Vampire Survivors on iOS after Arnie mentioned how fun it is and jesus christ is this an addictive little chaotic game
  • Just started Elden Ring on PS5 after Casey and JPC harangued me for months to check it out. So far I am absolutely getting my ass pounded at every turn.

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying!

Love

Hey Riddiots,

Hope you had a great January. It's been very cold here and I hate it. The only plus side to the winter time is that Spaghetti absolutely loves the snow. So at least she's having a good time out there. The downside to being inside is that I've had a ton of time on my hands to waste playing video games and watching TV so I'll give you a few of my recommendations for things that I've enjoyed.

1. Horizon Forbidden West - I loved HZD and this sequel does not disappoint. The first one (no spoilers) has a great mystery and a hell of a twist which this one can't really replicate. But what it lacks in mystery, it makes up for in narrative and tons of gameplay improvements. Also (and I love that games are getting better at this) a ton of interesting accessibility options.

2. Spider-Man: Miles Morales - I just fucking love slinging webs from those buildings. I could do that all day.

3. Marvel SNAP - Man, this game sucks. I started playing it when I had the puppies and I just never stopped. The games go by so quickly and require so little brain energy. Baby game for babies. 5 stars.

4. Bob's Burgers - finally finished watching every episode and the movie. Really great show. My favorite part is how much the family loves each other unconditionally. Even when they have conflict in the show, they always center it and resolve it on the love they share. Also the jokes are pretty good too.

5. Knowledge Fight podcast - This podcast has like 800 episodes so I haven't listened to them all, but I've been really enjoying it. I feel like this is as close as I'll ever get to listening to True Crime. The premise is that 1 host listens to Infowars and then debunks Alex Jones' claims to the other host. It's wild.

Much love to you all. Stay safe and warm!

Ahhh Australia!! If you go to Brisbane please check out Taro’s Ramen in the city/Southbank. I’ve had a hundred bowls there at least. Sydney: just please enjoy the aesthetic of everything and hit up Tetsuya’s if you have the time and money. Beach it up and swim in the rock pools. Melbourne: lots of good places anywhere you go, basically. Foodie paradise. Head down the great ocean road if one of you can drive here and enjoy the ride :) Tasmania: MONA!! And I guess there’s other stuff there too. But mostly MONA. The other parts of the map are largely “here be dragons” to me so I’ll let someone else take the reins there.

Also - if you’re here before April it’s almost certainly still going to be TOO HOT 🥵 sorry in advance!

Adal - If you’re able to find it in the US, check out Diane Morgan’s show Mandy! My partner and I spend our lives quoting it to each other, so be warned!

The book Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore has been amazing so far. I’m about halfway done with it and it has been a delight. It’s about the oldest soul in the universe and his quest to “get it right” and join the Oversoul in perfect harmony.

I love the book Hollow Kingdom! So unique, so funny. I cried.

Adal! Hope you're keen as for Australia. You've gotta come to Melbourne for the food and coffee, I'm in hospitality so I have a few suggestions about restaurants. Lygon St in Carlton is out little Italy, most places along there will treat you right for pizza and pasta (DOC is my recommendation). Beautiful Vietnamese/Thai modern fusion at a restaurant called Firebird, I went there recently and was blown away by their fish and beef carpaccio in particular. There is fantastic tapas at Movida in the city, great cocktails and phenomenal service (a bit pricey but worth it). Coburg is the go-to suburb for Middle eastern cuisines, check out A1 Bakery for some delish treats and Lunchy things. Lunch wise, Hector's Deli is a new-ish deli-style sandwich shop which is definitely worth the wait. Think fresh, pickley and saucy sandwiches on fresh made bread. Fucking delicious. Last but not least, I work in a European style tavern / Craft Beer Pub called The Local Taphouse. 20 rotating craft beers on at any time, HEAPS of local and a handful of international too. Let me sort you out with a cheeky pint or two or 30!

Also! Improv Conspiracy is the best local improv group, check em out for some of the funniest shit I've ever seen (and some of the worst, it's still improv)

Heck yeah! Knowledge Fight is my second favorite podcast. No one can beat y'all in the joyful chaos department. Also, they just announced that they will be covering Alex Jones' reaction to the Howard Dean scream... It's probably as close to a crossover that I can hope for. I would love to hear JPC on there though.

So excited to hear about the April live show!!

It was so cool to find out that JPC is getting into Knowledge Fight right as I am! If JPC's unaware of it, I would also recommend listening to Behind the Bastards, which is a similar vein of comedy but it's about all the monsters through modern and ancient history, with plenty of episodes featuring Alex Jones.

Adal - am going to see the burnt city soon. Dyou have any tips for watching? Or if anyone else does!

JPC a good person to follow if you are interested in accessibility options in video games is the journalist LauraKBuzz. They do a great job covering that topic.
