Basically, this is a small glimpse into the window of a deep romance with A. It's not really spoilery, as it's only a small moment, but if you would rather wait to experience what A's deep romance will be like completely fresh, then don't read below!!

Why is Ava’s bed so much cosier than mine? The errant thought drifts about the swampy mire that is my brain as I snuggle down into the comforting depths of the pillow.

It’s so plush that I almost don’t hear the knock at the door.

“Yeah?” I call, my voice breaking on the words.

“May I come in?” Ava asks, her voice sending a wave of healing through me instantly.

I roll around in the bed to face the door, my mind whirling with the motion, and I have to squeeze my eyes shut for a moment while sucking in a long breath to counter it.

“Only if you’re prepared for the worst sight of your life.”

“I have seen many things, my [redactedpetname]. I highly doubt that what lies behind this door would even compare to those,” she states.

I sigh, the breath catching on my scratchy throat and turning into a cough. “All right,” I finally manage to wheeze out.

The door swings open, revealing Ava’s broad frame as she steps inside and pauses at the end of the bed, a worried knot creasing her brows together.

“So?” I prompt. “I really am not a good sight, am I?” A smattering of tissues lay discarded on the duvet, littering me in a weird kind of halo.

“You are not the worst sight,” she says before tilting her head. “At least not quite.”

I purse my lips and frown. “Seriously?”

She rolls her eyes and strides towards the bed, sitting beside me and resting a hand on my hip over the duvet. “You have a simple cold, [Name]. You will recover.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better while I have to suffer through it,” I groan, my frown continuing as I stare at her. “You vampires have no sympathy just because you don’t get sick.”

“I am here, am I not?” she asks, leaning close and nuzzling her nose against my cheek before pressing a gentle kiss there.

Any irritation withers away beneath her touch, and I wrap my arms about her.

“Which I really do appreciate,” I mumble. “Now if you could find me a cure too, that would be great.”

She pulls away and looks down at me with a stern stare. “I offered to bring the healer here.”

“No, no.” I wave a weak hand in front of myself. “I don’t want to trouble Elidor over a cold.”

“Then unfortunately, you must suffer the consequences of that decision,” she says, a softness to the words that I’m still getting used to, even after all these months together. “But I will be right here to suffer through them with you.”

“Thank you, Ava,” I reply, my voice losing its strength as sickly fatigue smothers my mind and body.

She brushes a hand over my cheek, trailing it down my neck before resting it on my shoulder. “You are most welcome. Now rest.”

“Will you be here when I wake up?” I mumble, already settling back into the comforting embrace of the pillow.

“I will not leave your side.”

And she doesn’t, not just that day, but everyday until I’m finally better…and part of me wishes I had stayed sick just a little longer.
