(This is the first time I ever wrote the MC's father :D)

Writing Exercise Prompts:

- A single lily

- A cliff

- 3 hours

--

“Beautiful, isn’t it?”

“What?”

“The view,” the detective drew in a deep breath, his broad chest expanding with the motion.

Rebecca turned back to look out across the lake. Their vantage point at the top of the grassy cliff gave them a clear view over the expanse of rippling waters. If the selkies came out, they'd know about it.

“You hadn’t even noticed, had you?” he asked with a laugh.

Rebecca replaced her binoculars over her eyes. “The view isn’t what we’re here to observe.”

“Maybe not,” he said, and she could feel him plop down on the grass close beside her. “But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy every moment you can.”

She ignored him, instead shifting on the spot as she lay chest down on the cliff edge to avoid being spotted.

He had no such worries, apparently.

The waters were still except for a gentle breeze wrinkling its surface. Only a few boaters were out now, which would make their job easier.

A bright flash of pink in front of the lenses made Rebecca flinch and yank the binoculars away.

“What is that?” she asked, exasperation drawing out the words.

“A lily,” he said and pushed it closer towards her. “A stargazer lily, to be precise.”

This time he gave a smile—one that made Rebecca swallow down a sudden growing feeling in her chest.

She pushed herself into a sitting position. “And why are you wielding it at me?”

“Wielding it?” He barked a laugh. “Jeez, Becca, you need to catch up with the modern world…and language.”

She pursed her lips. “I’m quite fine as I am.”

“Yes,” he replied with a sudden genuineness that once again made Rebecca’s heart skip. “You really are great.”

She rolled her eyes at him to distract from the feeling inside her.

“Come on, Becca,” he pleaded. “We have three solid hours together.” He shuffled closer, his smile now half-hidden behind the blousy bloom. “Let’s make the most of it.”

“We’re working.”

He moved even closer. “We don’t have to be.”

The binoculars fell from her grasp as his lips consumed the rest of her worries.

And in the waters below, the selkies danced in the waves.
