How to make your own Zoom Murder Mystery (Patreon)
Content
In a recent pod I spoke about how I've recently put together a murder mystery party for a friend's birthday over zoom and a few people reached out to ask how to do it. You can do it for next to nothing and it provides a different flavour than yet another zoom sesh doing quizzes or any other shit you're bored of doing during lockdown.
You can make this as quick and stupid or as in-depth as you want.
The game is based around 5-10 players ("suspects") being given information pertaining to the murder of yourself. I usually host these as a detective or some other character since I'm the murder victim. The suspects are playing themselves which you're giving fictional storylines to. It plays out in 4 rounds and 7 suspects is ideal.
In the first round the suspects are presented with a piece of paper on which is written their status (as either innocent or the killer), their alibi (which they need to announce as soon as the game starts) and their motive (which is what they need to keep hidden for the whole game). It all plays out as your suspects take turns questioning each other. It's essentially an evening for you to watch your friends try to lie.
At the end you need to have them all DM you their accusation and theory.
I've included actual copies of notes and game info in the video so feel free to pause when images appear to read through. I've blocked out our address etc. with red bars if you were wondering wtf that's about. I'll list below a bunch of motives I've used as well if you want to steal ideas for your own party!
You don't need to be wildly inventive to put one of these together, it's just hilarious watching your friends sweat.
Motives I've used:
- the victim put a pet in danger by leaving a door open
- the victim was blackmailing a straight friend for discovering that they starred in a gay porno
- the victim gave someone scabies
- the victim unknowingly shat on someone's prize-winning vegetable patch
- the victim was shagging the person's dad
- the victim knew the person was having an affair
- the victim managed to get the person fired
- the suspect has a condition that causes them to become violent/lose memory
- the victim didn't half the lottery winnings with a suspect that they said they would
- the victim took credit for a song/piece of art created by a suspect
- the victim stole a job/opportunity that a suspect had tried to get themselves and told them about
- the victim broke a family heirloom
Feel free to comment or DM any queries and let us know if you host your own!
