Remember how I was mentioning SubscribeStar recently and it came up that additional fees were a bitch? Well, looks like some of these fees are also trickling into Patreon too. They will be sending around an official announcement with details to patrons around June 1st, but I thought I'd give you a heads-up too.

Basically, it's just taxes being added that we've been lucky to avoid before. Unlike other sales tax fuckery that's been added to online commerce in recent years, these are based on where YOU live rather than where the source of content is located. So, you'll be charged whatever local taxes you're used to seeing, including VAT in Europe. But keep your eye on it. It's always possible that they could get it wrong.

It starts July 1st. If you have any questions, here's an FAQ:

Or, ask me and I'll poke around. Thanks, everyone for your support. Stay moist!

Apparently nothing will change for EU based patrons. We are already charged VAT. For others, it may be a steep change! Do you plan on tweaking yout tier levels as suggested in the FAQ?

Anonymous

This won't change anything for residents in the EU. We already pay VAT based on the country we live in. 🤷 I would really appreciate if Patreon shows final prices (tax included) and shows a breakdown of how the costs are made up at the checkout. I consider it as some kind of "scam" that Patron don't do that. But that's just my opinion and have nothing to do with you 😇

Oh, they made it sound like this was all new stuff. Interesting. Yeah, I don't see a breakdown either. TBH, their site is lacking in several features you'd expect from a place that charges for the privilege of use. It's not much more than a community of "myspace" pages with customizable user roles based on subscription. That sort of thing is easily installed on most any website. I've been thinking of making my own adult site to do just that. All I'd lose is the advantage of "community" discover on Patreon, but I'm not convinced that's a big part of how I get subscribers anyway.

I’m not sure how to tweak them since everyone has different taxes. Do you have a suggestion?

Anonymous

No, no practical suggestion. They hinted at how some types of rewards may be taxed differently than others in some places, but it'd probably cumbersome to change your whole tier system only to take advantage of that.

I see that they have some tools they’re supposed to roll out later. I’ll check those when they’re available.
