Note: this video is in black and white. The Ford- Kavanaugh hearings were an intense public spectacle with very high stakes for the American public. Christine Blasey Ford testified to a harrowing encounter- an attempted rape that she was "100% sure" was committed by Judge Kavanaugh and his friend. Two other women had come forward with stories of abuse, but their testimonies were not taken (Emails by Chuck Grassley's aide later revealed that one of the other women had attempted to come forward and present her testimony but poor communications on the part of the Senator's staff caused a breakdown). People who watched Ford's testimony- including the people who would later vote to confirm Kavanaugh- found her "compelling", "sympathetic", and "believable". How then, could they disregard her testimony? And how did they explain this to the American people? This video is about gaslighting, a dishonest tactic that has been used by many modern politicians (including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush) but has reached extraordinary levels in the Trump administration- and filtered down through all levels of society. Its effects are pernicious and are poisoning the political landscape.
