They never outright say it, I don't think, but I'm pretty sure the original Skull Sorcerer was Vangelis' great grandfather or something. Like it's supposed to be a family tradition of keeping the 'lesser' creatures enslaved for the good of Shintaro. It would explain why he gets along so well with that thing.
