So idk if you remember. But earlier in the season iroh was kidnapped by earth benders. While they were transporting him aang flew over them in spirit form and iroh could see them. That was the first hint that iroh has had interactions with spirits

Oh and at the end the thing aang turned into was the embodiment of rage from the water spirit. The spirit was angry after the death of the moon
