A strong safety is a player position in American Football. All you really need to understand about the reference is probably clear from context. They tend to be one of the beefier guys on the team, and no one you'd want to have trying to tackle you. Major's point was just that he's no pushover.

"Did she just put an empty can in the fridge?" Probably, but I think we're supposed to understand it to be partially full. Shows very regularly use props like empty soda fountain cups where they're meant to be full in the story. I guess it's safer and easier on set, but it can be distracting when I notice. The most egregious example I'm aware of was an episode of Buffy where Willow saw something shocking and dropped the food she was carrying from one hand and beverage from the other. It's clear from the shot that the cup was empty, even though she was making a food delivery so she shouldn't be carrying an empty drink. I'm not sure if that's enough to bring the scene to mind, but I didn't want to spoil story events.
