Yes I agree that the writing was really flimsy as far as Hook's brother and their whole backstory. Him moving on was sudden and unwarranted. Clearly that was just used to wrap up loose ends. Even though this ep took place in the underworld, it felt like filler and didn't really advance the story this season.

From Hook's point of view, it makes sense that he saw Liam as a hero. Liam stayed with his brother when he could have left for The Royal Navy. Liam was the one to propose the mutiny and he was the one who mapped out the route out of the storm. Liam was Hook's anchor in hard times, someone he always could fall back on. And the only family he had for a long time after they were sold and abandoned by their father Furthermore, until this moment Hook couldn't have known that his brother had made a deal with the Lord of the Underworld. Therefore, in Hook's opinion, Liam saved the crew and his brother from the former captain and heroically tried to safely navigate them through the storm. With the woeful outcome that only the brothers survived. As a viewer, you know sooner that the story is different. But you should always remember that there is a difference between what the viewer knows and what the characters know. And that you should not just jump to conclusions (that easily).
