While I am not sure if it is ever explained, the way I see the whole "Jack's girlfriend" bit is to help explain why Jack is so antagonistic towards Nolan in the first half of the season. The reason couldn't just be because Nolan bought their house, because Jack would eventually understand that his father made a choice between the bar and the house. I think it is almost certain that Jack blamed Nolan for the breakup that followed, and disliked him ever since, but tolerated Nolan because he had money, and never really did anything to get thrown out of the bar.
