Seriously; Fucking stop defending cops. PERIOD.

Tony

I mean wether or not the cops were right or wrong, Dude should've gotten on the ground and put his hands behind his head. She wasn't defending the cops she was just saying that Capeguys decision to keep telling them he was on their side was not the right one

BJ Stephens

No, we won't because were not brainwashed by the media to believe they're always the bad guys.

Is it possible to actually talk to Shan? I’d love to have a conversation with her about these topics

AfterShowReactions

Yeah, it's possible. I am here, just often not allowed to look at the comments as I usually go to bed and then find out somebody has posted something spoilery, or sometimes I just end up saying the wrong thing since I suck at the whole wording system.

Wow cool. I enjoy your reactions and have been watching for at least a year but when it comes to black lightning I get frustrated sometimes when it comes to the subject matter. I want to make it clear I have no problem with you but I’d rather have a normal conversation about this stuff if you ever felt like it.

The thing is, as a white girl who doesn't live in America, it's hard for me to relate to these scenarios as I am not black and I don't live in those said conditions and therefore it may come across as though I'm being unsympathetic or dismissive of said behaviors. However, if you look at it from the perspective that I come from, I've never seen a corrupt cop. I've never seen a bad cop shoot anybody. The news here doesn't even talk about such things. I feel safe because of the cops here in Australia, and maybe thats because I'm white but I don't hear about black shootings either (despite I try to stay away from news - some things are so public that it's hard to avoid). Therefore, I can see the side of the cops in this instance, I am not defending them. They shouldn't have shot anybody I agree, but in a position where you're being told to do something while a gun is aimed at you, the simple response is to listen. If he listened, he would have lived. It doesn't matter about how he was treated, in the end he would have been alive. I'm not saying the cops had valid reason to shoot (despite the flying objects going around them in a city where Metas are terrorizing and killing people inc. cops). I was imply stating that if he had listened, he would have lived. If they shot him after he got on the ground, then thats a whole other story. I hope this was clear and didn't offend anybody. I find it hard to speak about such subjects as I feel as though people will attack me for having my opinions on such things and therefore I will be labeled a racist for simply not having the same experiences as others. Thank you for your constant support btw I have noticed a few of your comments in the past and have enjoyed reading them.

Thank you for sharing where you come from. I completely understand what you mean and want you to know this isn’t an attack. I’m glad you don’t live in an area or experience a situation with corrupt cops. That’s privilege I wish I had as a Black American. I wanted to talk about this not to argue or attack but simply let you know where I come from and so you could at least understand as someone who is on the outside, especially since I think this show was made with a certain audience in mind and that might leave others feeling confused about certain things. I appreciate the convo :)

There’s shows that go way harder on this subject than Black Lightning. And if you’ve ever had political discussions on this subject it’s even more harsher on the cops than this show is. I believe the writers said they hired a lot of Black writers on this show and wanted to have as authentic a voice on the Black experience as possible. So you’re right Comic there’s no holds barred in terms of who this show is made and aim for. And so it’s no surprise Shan may not understand it. They’re not trying to show a nuanced debate about the topic and beyond the fact that “Don’t resist when a cop points a gun at you” there’s no nuance to a debate about how cops treat Black people in this country. The anger and frustration displayed is an experience Shan cannot see just like men have trouble seeing the perspective of how women are viewed in this society

The song you were hearing just after the prologue has been heavily sampled, most notably by Dr. Dre for The Next Episode, which is what you were referencing but they were actually playing the original song, The Edge by David Axelrod.

I have had this same conversation with quite a few Australians and a common theme is white Australians can't relate on this issue because the country handles the national conversation differently. Racism, especially against the indigenous, is just as rampant there but it's still in the background. It's a topic the government hasn't been willing to tackle (hiring practices can show a big representation of that) so the general public is obviously not going to understand it as well. It's also not something that is prominent in the news media there mainly because of how misunderstood the topic is. The topic itself is exhausting but I recommend that you look up some stories from indigenous Australians. You can see how affected they are by this very topic. (And just to be clear. I am not trying to be rude or anything by saying this. Just thought I'd try and pass on some perspective.)

No I think it’s safe to say Zach that while racism is just as prevalent everywhere else as it is in America. America is so much further ahead on the discussion of racism than literally any other country. So trying to apply an American perspective on race is very difficult for Australians, Brits, etc. because they deal with racism so differently and just might not understand I like to say America leads the discussion. And if American race scholars didn’t coin the term Indigenous, Firsts nations, Asian. Other countries would still be saying “Indians”, “Aborginals, Orientals, etc.
