Disclaimer: It's been a while since I watched this episode, but there were some things that upset me about it as Rapunzel is my favourite Disney princess and I felt they didn't portray her very well. Perhaps what I said and the way I said it, may offend some people - that isn't my intent. I was just upset over seeing one of my favourite characters completely unrealized in a TV show I love. I apologize if you feel I said things in a wrong way.

I understand that some people may dislike the way some characters are portrayed in this show when they aren't what they expect. I personally do not have a problem with characters being portrayed differently because that's what this show likes to do. The show puts twists on characters or shows them in an entirely different light. Pan is portrayed as villain, and Rumple is the show's version of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast and the crocodile from Peter Pan to name a few. I think it's best to not expect characters to be what you know exactly what you know from anywhere you've seen them previously.

James jackson

If anyone's skin can handle a dry shave it is the crocodile's.

Andrew Polinski

Peter Pan isn't a good example Luis, he is portrayed in the original story as a little self centered egotistical brat so him becoming a villian not a long throw lets be honest. But i completely agree with Shan on this one, the story of Rapunzel specifically states what she looks like and the fact they haven't just bent Rapunzel's back story they have broken it into little pieces. This is to date the worst variant of one of these fairy tale characters they have ever done. Shan don't be ashamed of your comments on this one, if others have a problem with your comments then that is on them not you.

Looking forward to watch more OUAT today ^^

I admit, I wasn't a fan of this story with Rapunzel, not because it was different from the original story, I just didn't like it.

Luis Garcia

I don't really know a lot of the original stories, mostly just the Disney ones. However, a lot of the characters still have different stories from ones previously portrayed. I wasn't a fan of this story, not because it was different, but I just didn't like it. I loved the idea of Rumple being both the Beast and the crocodile, despite it being different from the Disney movies.

I totally get why you would feel that way. I personally feel similarly about most of the fairytales in this show that I liked when I was younger, because they are So different. The stories are just completely changed with some characters. Which is why I consider OUAT its own thing. But Ive had countless experiences with casting i didnt agree with so i can definitely see why youd be critical. That being said, I'm not a person of colour myself so I'm just speaking as a white person so i cant speak on whether people other than myself feel on the subject.

To be fair the Disney princesses themselves are completely different in some cases to the fairy tales they’re based off of. Disney takes a lot of liberties as well. Maybe they didn’t race Bend them. But if it works for the story they’re telling I guess it could be considered fair game for some people and not for others. This is why the theatre stage has always intrigued me. I’m not apart of that circle but I’m curious on how people perceive them. Considering they seem to do whatever they want, genderflip, racebend, and completely portray characters however they want.

Especially in ones like Sleeping Beauty, which, let's just say...had a little more than a kiss...

Andrew Polinski

Rapunzel is another character that disney is known for but didn't create. Rapunzel is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale written in 1812, so being a Brother's Grimm story you know it wasn't all roses either but in the end the one constant here is she has golden locks of hair otherwise the rhyme that goes with the story " Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair That I may climb thy golden stair!" Just doesn't work, does it?

You want a cookie or something?

Hey Shan, don't let the little SJW woke brigade get to you. They're miserable human beings in general. The majority of us here appreciate your honest reactions. It's the vocal minority that will pressure you and try to shame you into succumbing to their group-think mentality. "Think like us, or you're cancelled!"

Anonymous

Just pretend that she was a different character other than Rapunzel maybe Fiona from Shrek lol

bixi

That rhyme doesnt exist in the german original. Since German is my native language I was wondering, what the big deal is about her hair not being golden. To be fair it is mentioned once that her hair is "fine like spun gold" and I guess if you grew up with that rhyme (because the rhyme is what one normally remembers best) and that picture of her, it would be a bit weird to see a Rapunzel without golden hair.

Quite frankly I agree, with you opinion Shan. I feel like if you want a person of colour then just make a character or choose a black person. Not replace a white person. I am not a racists and I don't want to seem that way, but I don't see why we only get black representation when they race bend a white person. At least in a all white cast. I feel like a show/movie should have. A character that's purely black. Not to say you can't race bend, but if you have no other black characters it kinda seems like a show is trying to be inclusive and diverse when in actuality it's not.

Anonymous

Yeah, it's race bending for the sake of forced diversity. They didn't change her race to serve the story or character, they did it to say "hey look at us, we're woke and progressive!"

Anonymous

And also david why is it ya'll have all these white characters but one episode they change one character that not in the main cast for a side story and ya'll are mad, explain that to me please. Did rapunzel being black messed up the episode for you in the 5 mn she was there? It's a show full of white people and 1 side story have you riled up like this, wow. But I'm guessing "you're not racist" right?

Anonymous

Hey would you like black people to have their own bathroom too, negroes only

Anonymous

Rodline I'm not a racists because I have many freinds who are black who agree with me. I only say that I'm not racist, just to get my across without people like you thinking another white privelaged arse hole. Despite me having black freinds, and standing for the Black Lives Matter movement. Because clearly to people like you anything comes out the wrong way. And I'm talking about diversity not segregation. And no the character being black didn't ruin the episode, but it ruined her fairytale story. And I understand the writers like to change the story for fairytale characters, but this is basically another character. And the black freinds I have and others I know, don't like race bending for the sake of race bending. Because its like what I've already said. Diversity for the sake of diversity. If you want a black person in a show, it's fine but you shouldn't need to race bend. Give them there own character that many black woman can relate to. But adding long hair and a tower doesn't make her Rapunzel.

Here's a YouTube video. (By a Black person) trying to explain what I'm failing to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhKFv92JGqM&t=5s . It's a LongBeachgriffy skit, on Disney making The Little Mermaid black. Along with the other Disney characters. Representation is fine, but give a black person their own original black princess. This is what is important.

Anonymous

And when it comes down to "I'm not a racist." I am only trying to be cautious. Because unfortunately this world has changed to a point where you can't say anything without being labelled as racist, homophobic piece of shit. Which is a big problem, since ten years ago, no-one cared. So when a white person talks about a topic as controversial as a black Rapunzel, everyone automatically labels them as a racists. Which is so unfair, because that isn't what where saying. Yes, racism is a big problem and horrible, but because one has an opinion on Black people in Movie/Shows, doesn't make them a racist. I just feel like if you want a black princess, then give them an already existing black princess, or make a new one that young black women can relate to.

Anonymous

And it's not about being a racist, it's also about representation. If a show want a black woman, then at least be true to black women. Because a Black Rapunzel isn't really best for young black women, because for, example black women in particular are prone to hair loss more than white people. Hence the braids and dreadlocks. So a long hair Black Rapunzel makes no sense. I'm not saying this is for every black woman, but it is more common than not. So if you wanted a black princess, then give her a storyline and princess that includes braids, not long hair one has to climb.

Anonymous

"I have black friends" lol that's funny. Did you know the slave masters use to rape their slaves? Fascinating isn't it. One side story in one episode with a whole white cast, and you write a dissertation to me as to why you're not racist and have black friends. But I'm the problem here

Anonymous

Tyrone you're a racist piece of shit, just in case I wasn't clear, tell your "black friends" that

Anonymous

Rodline, I am so sorry, that you have been hurt. I was trying to put my opinion out there, as I don't mind black princesses, they should just have their own princess, so young black women can have someone to look up to. No-one would be happy if they changed Mulan's race to white or black. But whether or not I am a racists (Which I'm not.) clearly your still living in the past. I mean why the hell are you still talking about slavery and masters. Yes it was a big problem, but the world has gotten better since then, but clearly you can' see that. Maybe you have gotten a lot of hate for being black, and for that I'm sorry, but not everyone is out to get you. But if you think it's alright for young black women, to look up to a black Rapunzel, when many black women, don't get that luxury, as they deal with hair loss, hence the braids and dreadlocks. I'm just saying give a black person there own princess. Many complained, when they wanted to make a female James Bond, but apparently there's a difference when it comes to black people. You shouldn't need to replace a white character to have a black person, that's all I'm saying. Just make a black princess, or use an already existing one for black people to look up to. I'm sorry you're mind can't comprehend that. And as for one side story, this is one day of talking to you, I'm never getting back. Thankyou.

IT WAS 5 FUCKING MN OF A CHARACTER IN A 40 MN EPISODE OF A SHOW FULL OF WHITE PEOPLE. BRUH WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM, WHAT THE FUCK DID THIS CHACRATER DO YOU IN 5 MN? I'M DONE WITH YOUR DUMBASS, YOUR MICROAGRESSION IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL. FUCK YOU RACIST DIMWIT

Anonymous

Can you please stop? I had an opinion, you didn't like it. Get over it.

Anonymous

Yes white person be more condescending I beg you racist jerk

Anonymous

Why are you still arguing? This is unnecessary, and just boring. I get it you don't like white people talking about black people in movies/shows. You don't like my opinion, which is completely fine, you are welcome to your own opinion. But this is just getting ridiculous now. You have clearly got a grudge towards me, and I am sorry if I have said something to offend you, but is stand by what I've said. If you find what I said racist, then I'm sorry. But everything I have said, was not meant to harm anyone, which clearly you have been hurt by this. But quite frankly, this isn't the case, you just like to create drama and chaos for no reason, because you thrive off it. And I know this because I have lived with people who do the same. The only happiness you get in life is by bringing other people down, by calling me a racist. But I'm not offended, because I understand you just don't like opinions, from white people. I just hope that you'll see that you are just being dramatic and stop. Goodbye.

First off let me start off by saying I did not read the disclosure or any of the comments before I started watching this episode. My God, that was one of the most uncomfortable, cringiest things I've ever had to sit through. First off, you trying to explain yourself by listing all the black characters that you like was not the right approach. Then you pretty much admit that you don't like her because she's black. After that you go into explaining when you feel like it appropriate to race bend. WHAT?! And finally you have a huge problem with the story. Can you please tell me a single character whose story is exactly like it was in the fairy tale? Just one! I feel like every single character story is bended to fit the story and Rapunzel's fit the story well. I feel like if she was a white girl with blonde hair and a pink dress you would not have cared. Some of you guys in the comments really need to take a hard look in the mirror. "I'm not racist, but" "I have black friends" haha I CAN'T! Why are you guys even saying it's okay when her apology clearly isn't directed towards? My blood is boiling right now.

Tony

Ok.. Well first of all that's on you, Not reading the disclaimer before you start watching. And 2nd, The way Rapunzel was portrayed did not fit the story well. The character had little to nothing in common with the fairy tale version. Her being black is just very small part of a much larger issue. If they had instead given this character another name that might've worked. But they did not. And she is well within her right to voice her opinion on this on her own channel. If you'd take the time to get to know her you'd actually know that the way you're trying to make her come off as is not at all the person she is. I hope you have nice day and have managed to cool off a bit. :)

DatBaddieCow

Yeah I noticed she does that a lot (I've been watching her on YouTube for a while) and I noticed she mentions black characters sometimes and seems to have an issue with them. She was also upset with Super girl when they made I forgot his name but he was originally white and they made him into a black character. This is no the first time she's been upset over a character being black. I kind of try to see it from her perspective, she live in Australia, probably not many people of color around her thus she's not really well introduced to other people who don't look like her. OH and also she did the same thing mocking Sayid's name from Lost and in The Fosters...invalidating Colorism in America. I don't think she's a mean person or anything.
