Obviously Jay Garrick is the one in the pod

Firstly, Kryptonians can’t breathe in space because there is nothing to breathe in a vacuum. But they don’t need to breathe as they can get by on solar radiation supercharging their cells to keep them alive and they can hold their breath for a real long time if need be. But that’s just me nitpicking because you are correct in saying that the whole not being able to survive in space argument is just kinda stupid. It was all for the drama and the tearful moment. At least we got a good scene out of it even if the explanation was dumb. Secondly, overall I feel the first season is good even if the finale is a little meh. It’s biggest problem in my eyes is that it feels way too episodic at the expense of the serialized story. I think this may have been due to the fact that it was aired on CBS which is a network known for it’s episodic TV and not so much for serialized shows, so this show may have been written with that type of audience in mind. Also, after Astra’s death, we never really got enough time with Non to actually make him feel like a threat. Lastly, I want to talk about that last scene. I remember when I first saw the episode I was so excited because I knew exactly who was in the pod. I won’t spoil their identity but just let me say that I could hardly believe that my 3RD FAVORITE COMIC BOOK CHARACTER OF ALL TIME was going to be on the show. Just thinking of all the potential story possibilities that could be explored were mind boggling to me. I spent that whole off-season getting more and more excited as the days passed. All I can really say about season two is that I’m really looking forward to your reactions. It’s kind of a Love/Hate season for me, so it will be interesting to see what you think of it.

Noone can breath in space because there is no atmosphere in space, Superman in many stories has to wear space suits or masks with an air supply. He holds his breath when not wearing a mask. You keep saying she is from a different atmosphere so therefore she can breath in outerspace... that makes no sense... she has to breath an atmosphere even if it's slightly different then the one on earth and there is no atmosphere in space.

Wyatt

... no one can breathe in outer-space because there is nothing to breathe in outer space. Superman obviously has a ship from one of his previous encounters with an alien. She is right about the freezing thing though.

Andreas Froby

I did google this "can superman breathe in space" and got this answer as first result, no one can breathe in space (there's nothing to breathe!) and he does need to breathe, so he either holds his breath or takes breathing apparatus with him when he goes into space. and he's even been endangered by asphyxiation in the past: Superman will die without oxygen.

Tammy L. Faulkner

Superman can't breathe in space... he just doesn't breathe. Supergirl must not have got the memo. The ice think is iffy though.

SnowMart

Being an alien doesn’t equal being able to breathe in space. They’re from another planet, not outer space itself. Them being an alien doesn’t default to their home planet having the exact same conditions as all of space. Earth doesn’t, do why would Krypton? Although, that doesn’t take away the fact that other iterations of the characters have been able to breathe in space though, like you said. I guess it’s jut this show’s interpretation, and given what I’ve said above, I don’t think it’s a big deal. There’s no guarantee that Clark came flying from outer space directly into national city, either, although maybe it’s an “I’ve been here longer” thing? Maybe Clark can breathe in space but Kara can’t yet, I don’t know. 🤷‍♂️

Zach Hershman

Kara not being able to breathe in space isn't something the show writers came up with. It's something that the comics has gone back and forth on. They can/can't (depending on iteration) breathe underwater as well.

Brent Justice

There is no air in space to breath, all Superman and Supergirl can do is hold their breath for a long time.

Brent Justice

I don't think you quite understand how space works.

The freezing thing is because of the solar System. Our Galaxy is powered by the yellow sun allowing her to have her powers (Same with Superman) so yes she can float in space and not freeze to death, but no she can not breathe in space because there’s no atmosphere. Another commenter nailed it, they don’t need to breathe because they can use their powers to hold their breathe for a really long time. So we can just chalk that up to Kara being inexperienced with her powers

Jason Veevaert

The way I see it is, under a yellow sun, kryptonians are basically lowercase g gods

Brandon Wiesner

You know you could be less condescending with your comments. What she said was true, there are many, if not most, canons before that have had Superman/Supergirl and Kryptonians able to survive in space. So it was unusual for them to go the route of her passing out and having to be rescued once she left the atmosphere. It served the story they were telling but for a fan of the characters from before, it was kind of WTF.

Tom Tattershall

Supergirl's powers seem to have increased quite a bit during this season. The last time Supergirl used her heat vision to such an extent (against Red Tornado) she was powerless for a day or so, but in this episode she was able to lift a massive spaceship into outer space right afterwards while she had trouble holding up the much smaller passenger plane in the pilot at full strength (just inexperienced at flying).

David Brown

Shan, in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited Superman used the ship he came to Earth in (modified to fit his adult body - they were cartoons after all) to go on missions in space, like when he found Supergirl. And he wore a space suit (with the "S" shield on the chest) with an oxygen tank. In Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Dean Cain's (Alex's dad and Kara's adoptive dad) Superman once went in space and he wore a small oxygen tank hooked up to a mask. 46:41 KRYPTONIANS CANNOT BREATHE IN SPACE!!! Krypton is most likely an oxygen atmosphere. Why would Jor-El send his son to a world with an atmosphere he could not breathe? On Krypton (with the red sun) they are as powerless as we are. Our yellow sun gives them superpowers, but they still have to breathe oxygen.

David Brown

Superpowers and breathing are two seperate things. The yellow sun gives them superpowers. But breathing is a seperate issue. They still need oxygen.

Brent Justice

The Atmosphere of Krypton is the same as Earth. It's an oxygen atmosphere. What makes Kryptonians different is that they have a much denser DNA pattern that reacts to the radiation of a Yellow Star differently. Under the yellow star radiation they have super powers. Superpowers given by yellow star radiation, and breathing an oxygen atmosphere are 2 different things. Space does not have an atmosphere, space is a vacuum, it is void of oxygen and anything breathable, it doesn't matter if you are an alien, there's still nothing to breath in space. With the Kryptonians superpowers under a yellow sun they can hold their breath, but the physics of space are still relevant. You seem to be confused about the nature of Kryptonian super powers, and the nature of space. I hope that helps. An Atmosphere is only something that is on a planet, there is no atmosphere in space, and Krypton has the same atmosphere as Earth, it's not about the atmosphere at all and just cause she's an alien doesn't mean she can survive in space, that is because of the yellow star radiation giving her that super power to be able to even exist in space.

Brent Justice

And she isn't freezing cause she has enough yellow star radiation to allow her skin to not freeze.

Brent Justice

This was a really great finale, lifting the space station into space is amazing, and it's a good ending, I think you let your misinformation and bias ruin it.

TheMew

a couple of episodes ago when it said he was off world it just meant he was on another planet and would have used a ship or at least a breathing apparatus to get there. There are a few times in some comics films and smallville where it shows him in space but it's usually them having him hold his breath or having his cells not need oxygen which they couold have done here but it's much more common in the comics to not have him breath in space. you can't be faulted for thinking of those versions where its like he is breathing in space but like others have said you can't blame it on the show and make it like they made it up when it's a very common thing in the comics, cartoons etc that he can't breath in space. just google it and you will see tons of pictures.
