I love this show, but yeah, watching the Pilot now after so many years, it was a bit cringey, boring, and too much exposition. It does get better! The reason they speak to the camera is that the original concept was that an exchange student was living with - I think Claire & Phil- and he is making a documentary about the modern American family. But you never see the student, and they never really explain it. I didn't know this until years later, when I read it somewhere.

If you look closely, the actress who plays Claire is pregnant during the Pilot. She always has a laundry basket, or a big bowl, or a bag in front of her.

I watched Modern Family a lot when they started running it in syndication here and really enjoyed it at the time, though I didn't stick with it long term. I recently binged Community on Hulu, which started about the same time. I really like Community and think it was the better show, but it too has some bits that in 2009 were slightly edgy but (relatively) funny (usually about homosexuality or race), but really haven't aged well.

Unlike the Office, the documentary or mockumentary style was not told why they were filmed or speaking to the camera. It's really just a story telling device and you just need to hand wave it off.

I loved this when it first aired. I think I got bored by season 5 or so and stopped

honestly, the scheduling of when to shoot Luke was what sold me on this show... Like others, I gave up about halfway through the series... but man. This was an excellent start imo.
