Ooo yay, I love stuff like this. 1st thought: you haven't seen the Matrix?? 2nd thought: well yea she's like 10 years younger than me and I saw it when I was like 14. Kinda weird for a 4 yr old to watch the Matrix. I like stuff like this meaning filling in pop culture gaps. There's tons of Matrix references in the reaction shows but it's that kind of period where it was too early for you to have seen at the time, recent enough that it's something that people reference constantly. Like for me, that would mean movies like Top Gun (✓ seen), the Goonies (✘haven't seen), E.T. (prob saw before memory developed), or Karate Kid (✘haven't seen but know that's where we get 'wax on wax off'). And you grow up hearing these references and kindaaa getting it but finally seeing what people were actually talking about can be a lot of fun 😄

Did I fall asleep...for a little while. You are adorable 😀

UTU49

The Matrix influenced EVERYTHING. This should be fun.

UTU49

Everything from Shrek to Buffy made HEAVY references to the Matrix.

Pate

Wasn't this like the movie that made people jump from VHS to DVD? Like the way Avatar boosted Blu-ray. "How did you guys watch it?" I watched it a few years after it came out. My friend and I had a sleepover so we could watch the DVD (prob rented from Blockbuster 😛) Right as the movie was starting the power went out. We sat there for hrs just bored and grumpy cause we weren't in the mood to do anything other than watch the movie and finally 'understand'. Just as we gave up and were going to sleep the power came back on, so we stayed up to watch it. Lots of "what is real bro??" joking from people who'd just seen it.

Jarrod Wild

As I recall this was the first movie to reach 1 million in DVD sales. I was one of those DVD converts in 1999.

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies. Sequels aren't as good but I still love them. Literally subbed to patreon when I saw you tweet this was going to be here.

Anonymous

I give birth to number two's all the time.

Zoot!

Saw this one in cinemas when it first came out in 1999. I went into it knowing absolutely nothing about it. I hadn't even seen a commercial. It was completely game changing for the time - plot and special effects. The internet was still pretty young, so there wasn't a ton of online discussion. I think the marketting campaign revolved around "What is the Matrix?", which was supposed to be the big plot twist. It was a really fun movie to see that first time. Also I'm pretty sure The Matrix was the first DVD I ever owned.

Jarrod Wild

Even the trailers were good at hiding the movie's secrets. That whole campaign generated a lot of hype. There was a whatisthematrix.com website too.

MittenCrab

Take the red pill, Shan...and realise that Tahney is the glitch in the Matrix and Keanu is MiniDiscDude.

Scarlett Monrow

That was fun! Matrix for me (an anime fan) was a lot like live action anime. Style and plot and overall mood was very similar. And you really need to watch "Back to the Future" - it's a classic! What about Matrix 2 and 3? Will there be a reaction?

Brandon Wiesner

It's Reloaded, then Revolutions.

Jarrod Wild

Keanu severely injured his neck before filming, and he was almost paralyzed but saved by surgery. He went on to train anyway and didn't want to delay the shooting schedule. He was hard on himself for not being able to do certain stunts like triple kicks (all kicks were very hard on his neck), and they delayed shooting certain action scenes till he was ready. Keanu was a real trooper, ended up doing a huge chunk of his own stunts anyway.

Jarrod Wild

Shan, your dingo is weird. :)

I thought Shan had seen the Marvel Netflix shows, guess not. It's been too long since I last saw The Matrix, that was fun (and there's still a bazillion other vids from ASR today)... The song at the beginning of the bar scene was Dragula by Rob Zombie. It has an awesome music video (which is on youtube). "Dragula" is the name of Grandpa Munsters' race car, created for an episode that had budget for some reason. Grandpa was the vampire on The Munsters. Rob Zombie bought Dragula for his personal collection of monster memorabilia and wrote a song about how cool the car is. lol... Movies can be pilots? Wow... the possibilities...

Brent Justice

Well yes now you have to watch the sequels

Brent Justice

That wasn't a floppy disk at the beginning, it was a mini-CD, Neo was dealing in illegal or hacked software

Brent Justice

Please watch the other two for the full story

Brent Justice

There weren't any floppy disks in this movie, first of all, as I said earlier, that was a mini-CD, look it up, it's like half the size of a CD, it's a real thing and is based on CD's. The future disk for loading the programs was obviously some form of future technology, it didn't look like a floppy to me, it had a way different interface and look to it, it's probably way higher density than anything we have today in that format.

Zoot!

And now the common joke around the trilogy: they made sequels? I've only ever heard of one Matrix movie! ;)

Anonymous

Hopefully you eventually watch the sequels.

Gary Poussard

Something else interesting for her is that it was shot in Sydney.

Eric Haefele

This movie was a revelation when it first came out. So much new and unexpected at the time. The only other movie that I can recall with so many new and unexpected ideas hitting all at once, was a very different type of movie , "Groundhog Day". If you have never seen it, I recommend that you put it on your list of things to see.

Anonymous

Let her have her fantasy that Neo sold illegal programming disks for Adam, ultimate crossover. Floppy disk dude!

WHOO! Iconic movie, and an iconic reaction. I'm such a Shanfan I was rooting for you the whole time and clapping for you whenever you guessed something right. (you were so proud of yourself, LOL) Well I was proud as well. Great stuff, that was real fun.

Tammy L. Faulkner

I've seem The Matrix, and I THINK 2 and 3 because things I THOUGHT happen in this movie didn't. But I don't remember the stories to the others.

Hef

yep, if in doubt just remember 'alphabetical'... Relo before Revo. :)

Anonymous

Like your reaction to this movie.

Jon Dub

Wait, you haven't watched the Back to the Future Trilogy, well there is your next movie reactions right there!!

Jon Dub

Also I watched this in the cinema, I was 16 in 1999, and it blew my mind. The 2nd and 3rd movie suck hella balls in my opinion, total trash, but some like them

UTU49

The Wachowski's did different things with the 3 movies. Every viewer is going to like some of their aspects better than other aspects.

Anonymous

The fighting here is pretty good, no cuts and generally no doubles. Try watching Jackie Chan films, its insane what the human body can do.

Juan Sanchez

When's part deux n three you think will come reaction.

Jeffrey Mlinek

This movie probably lost some of the wow factor for you because it didn't seem fresh. You have undoubtedly seen so many other movies and shows that borrowed and referenced this movie that none of it seemed new to you. I think that is impossible to avoid and it kind of sucks because almost everything that should have felt fresh and revolutionary just felt old and played out to you when it was the Matrix that did it all first. I know you still enjoyed it, but media references have killed the ability for anyone to appreciate it fully.
