They don't really go into this on the show, but the idea with Kai is that his ability to siphon magic isnt witchcraft but a genetic anomaly which gives more reason as to why his coven treated him like an outsider. Also concerning how caroline's mom has cancer, I saw a similar storyline years prior on Heroes with one of the main characters having regenerative blood and them saying why using that to cure cancer was a terrible idea and I'm sure enzo would tell caroline why too considering he was experimented on for 50+ years

I love the fact that Elena is falling in love with Damon all over again so quickly, too. It's one of the reasons why I don't mind this particular memory loss storyline. I love the fact that, even reduced to having only bad memories of Damon, Elena never even entertained the idea that she might want to get back together with Stefan, and that she's already half-way back to falling in love with Damon after just a few episodes of having him back in her life.

Tyler is trash, I think most people would agree, but I honestly understand Liv and Luke. They're twins, they have been together their entire lives. They haven't seen Jo since they were 4. Not only would they obviously have a stronger bond with each other than with Jo, but it makes sense that they'd rather take the chance that Jo dies (but could beat Kai) than *knowing* 100% that one of Liv or Luke dies if they merge.
