Knew you'd like the one full of flashbacks :)

one of the best episodes for sure.

Will

They had more weapons, but he managed to get a gun pointed at them when they weren't pointing guns at him. They couldn't have shot him again without there being a good chance of having him shoot one of them, and they decided it wasn't worth it.

Clara V.

Also he was aimimg at the boss who of course felt like he himself wasn't expendable and everyone else had to follow his orders because he's the boss and they don't want to risk the consequences in case he does survive. When any loss is an unacceptable loss it isn't really a matter of superior numbers. And they knew Mal had nothing to lose but they did. Most normal people who want to keep living would behave like this.

None of them were willing to die. He had the drop so at least 1 was going down with him if they started shooting

You sang a little of it..not long now. Proud of you!! :D

Aes86

With River, remember they didn't expect Firefly to only last one season, and her mystery is sort of a long story line to the show.So you only get small bits and pieces at a time.

UTU49

This is one of the more interesting examples of "flashback juggling".

Andrew Pulrang

They really did a great job of making us feel sad for the crew. Even though we are pretty sure they’re not going to die, THEY think they are, which gives real weight to the emotion. And the whole story really reinforced that they are a family.

Aes86

Well it's nice that it shows Mal's individual relationships with each of the crew outside of the flashbacks. Like the non verbal looks and the short conversations and how they differ between him and Wash and him and Jayne for example. Both show a mutual respect but Wash's is more emotional/ brotherly / BFF and Jayne's is still brotherly but maybe like a brother in arms type connection, strong but completely different.

I think Kaylee was meant to be a Willow/Anya combo. Whedon created her character to fill part of each niche.

David Boyd

Fun Trivia Bits: The reason Zoe has a reduced role in this ep: Gina Torres was off getting married to her now ex-husband, Laurence Fishburne. The button Wash points out that Mal should push to call everyone back: Alan Tudyk stole it from the bridge when the show's cancellation was announced. He later gave it to Joss telling him that when his miracle gets here to push it and they (the cast) would all come back.

FUCK! lol

I love this eps, I like the flashbacks to see how people came about to become on the ship.

Kelly Parks

Love this episode. Side note: It's a common TV/Movie misconception that in a situation like this running out of oxygen is the danger. It's not. There'd still be plenty of oxygen left when they all died of carbon dioxide poisoning. It's their exhales that will kill them.

Best episode of Firefly, love the reaction!

Katherine Thoreson

I don't know if anyone has told you this yet, but the set for Serenity was built in two parts, but complete in each part. The upper and lower decks. So when you see the characters walking "through" the ship, they're actually walking through it. The set is complete as you see it because Joss wanted it to feel like a real thing, and he often referred to Serenity as the 9th main character.

Jarrod Wild

I assume you meant 10th main character, unless you are ranking them and putting Jayne last. :)

Jarrod Wild

Jewel Staite was actually asked to *gain* weight for the role. Whedon didn't want some slim "perfect" girl to play Kaylee.

Hef

Great episode and a great reaction. Wash with a moustache, lol. Which reminds me, be sure to check out the blooper reel at some point.

Katherine Thoreson

Ha! Yes you are correct. I was thinking there were 9 main cast characters when I typed that, and I guess my brain just decided to betray me. :)

Dennis Bryant

Yeah, the second and third season they were supposedly planning would have told a lot more about everything, but silly network cancellation... It is obvious on rewatch that they were really playing light on her story, very slowly building it up. She was meant to just be that crazy little girl in the background, at this point, and she is.

Ron Fehr

The opening scene of this episode was intentional. It was meant to show the distance that Mal had to walk, from the cargo bay all the way to the engine room.

Ron Fehr

"You woulda done the same.' I think not. Not everyone has an ulterior motive for helping someone out. There is such a thing as helping purely out of kindness. Unfortunately most people are not like that.

Ron Fehr

Point of interest. In the gag reel for this show, there's a funny moment during the introduction of Wash. We see him with his moustache, cut to Zoey and Mal wearing fake moustaches.
