Now THIS is a nice surprise! I loved this show, even more than the U.S. version. Can't wait to see your reaction. And thanks, mittencrab.

It's now 4am here and I have to be up in three hours...totally worth it! Glad you enjoyed the pilot, Shan. Being Human is one of the few shows I considered that has a pilot that hits the ground running. You get a really good sense of what the series is about from it. I haven't watched the US version myself, but I'm told Being Human (US) is that rare beast: a remake that is pretty good in its own right. *takes deep breath* Shagging: if you're an emotionally repressed Brit, then you have a requirement for a word to describe sex that promises neither the emotional intensity of "making love" nor the raw, animalistic passion of "f*cking". "Shag" is generally considered to be somewhat less offensive than "f*ck", although it is used in a similar way. To shag is to have sex that is normal, inconsequential...mundane. Perhaps it is the worst word after all.

Hmm, Aussies and Brits sound the same to me. This show was about the pain, not the power, of being monsters. These are some seriously conflicted characters. And as with most UK shows, I like the "bipolar" swapping back and forth from casual small talk to deep loss and drama.

I personally preferred the US version more, but still enjoyed what I have seen of the UK one

Lostmyshoe22

I love both versions but I preferred the British one.

With Buffy's end slowly approaching you really are already and unknowingly branching out in to some of the best other shows to potentially react to :P - Farscape, Being Human, The Originals. I watched Being Human (UK) as it first aired in the UK. I was pissed off when the US made their own version instead of just adopting ours, so out of principal at the time I refused to check it out and kept continuing with the UK version. I laughed during this reaction because at the beginning you said British series have thick accents for you and then while watching I was remembering how some of the hospital staff in this show have pretty thick Bristol-area, southwest-England, 'countryside' accents - they're funny and strange for me to hear in shows too Shan, and I'm from the UK. It's interesting not remembering what happened in this show but remembering things as I rewatch it through your reaction video. I'm almost wondering what happens in the next episode like a first-timer. I know it's only the first episode but who was your favourite character so far?

loved this show, but only got to see a few episodes of the 'merican version. Aidan turner (Mitchell) of course went on to play Kili in the Hobbit movies.

OMG - awesome! I'm getting my costume ready for tonight, so can't watch now. Excited to come back to this for later - I loved this show.

Awesome! I haven't watched the reaction yet but am happy to see this uploaded. I always loved this show (but was much less keen on the American version). Another British show worth checking out is Misfits (which is even better imo).

Gotta say, the US version is much better. Especially compared to the final seasons of this.

I watched this as it aired. I know the US version is also meant to be good, but I haven’t seen it. I think it starts out with the same premise and core 3 characters. Also, an old friend from university is partly responsible for this show being made/getting picked up. :D Before this ‘Episode 1’ there was a pilot that aired a year earlier in 2008, ( on BBC 3) . It was one of those tester pilot things, see the reaction it got. It got mixed reviews. But a lot of enthusiasm from viewers. My old uni friend - who is a massive Buffy fan, we used to geek out over Buffy together when it was airing live, (and squee over having a beautiful lesbian romance on the show, and melt over Spike, and me realising that I did actually find a very few men attractive, lol) - she was a journalist for years. Both for Sc-fi publications like SFX and newspapers, other journals. She started an online petition to get the show picked up and made after the Pilot aired. There had been a few other pilot shows also commissioned by BBC3 and the Being Human show creator Toby Whithouse had been told that: “Before the pilots were broadcast, Whithouse was told that only Phoo Action would be commissioned for a series. The pilot episode was broadcast on 18 February 2008. The journalist Narin Bahar of the Reading Chronicle started an online petition to lobby BBC Three commissioning editors to greenlight a full series, which was signed by over 3,000 people.[22] Phoo Action was cancelled after it was decided that the scripts for the series were not good enough[23] and Being Human was then commissioned.[24]” And : “Viewership for the pilot was very high,[35] and a massive online petition drive helped turn the pilot into a series.[34]” Both quotes from the Wikipedia page - which is of course spoilery! Until I went to check when the original Pilot had aired, I did not know this!! Narin and I weren’t very in touch around 2008, had drifted apart a bit then, though by a year or so later we were friended on FB and back in touch. I’m so chuffed and excited by this - I have to go contact Narin now and thank her for helping to make this show happen !! :D :D

OK, the original pilot. It’s not available anywhere now except on youtube as far as I can tell. It had different actors playing Mitchell and Annie, and the the re-casting of Aiden Turner and Lenora Crichlow in the roles - well, they are much better. However, there were things covered in that pilot that gave more context, and also started with Mitchell and George moving in, and finding Annie the ghost,( some more stuff about Annie, that I think they might repeat in flashbacks so I won’t say for now) George changing to werewolf form down in the basement room at the hospital, stuff like that. Also, the actual story of what happened with Mitchell and Lauren. Showing Mitchell abstaining for a long time and then majorly slipping with biting/turning Lauren during sex. I think that makes a weird opener for this episode, some things seem a bit ‘jumping in without much info’ and that we have to figure them out. I think because they expected most UK viewers to have seen the pilot, and didn’t want to repeat it. That story /info from that episode is expected to be known. Oh, yeah - the Pilot is cannon. With this Episode 1, the way it starts, I think can give the impression that this is what Mitchell does, bite & kill people - even though that we see Mitchell hitting himself in anger, it could be seem this way. Until later in the episode when he stops the vamp in the hospital from killing. I prefer it being established in the Pilot that he’s ‘on the wagon’ ( so a ‘good vampire’ !! lol) , then seeing him struggle and give in to his vampire urges. On drinking pig blood. For me that was very much a Buffy thing, ( some vamps doing that in that universe, if souled or chipped :D ). Does it happen in Vampire Diaries too? I haven’t watched it. However, I think in most vampire mythology/fiction since Victorian times, vampires only drink - or CAN only drink human blood. it is their food and they can’t just switch to the blood of another animal - I think there may be variations, either other blood doesn’t sustain them, or they do not crave or desire anything but human blood. Shan , your reaction here makes me curious about the TVD vampires, since it seems normal in my head from all the films and shows I’ve watched which date from old Hollywood 30s films onward, that vampires have a craving for human blood that is hard to resist. In recent TV shows from the last couple of decades, whether vampires are evil, can be redeemed or not, can control themselves or not, have any humanity or not - varies quite a bit between different universes. So, interesting to see for a first time viewer what type of vampires these are, and what the mythology is for these vamps.

On the Pretty Vampire. Aidan Turner, who plays Mitchell, did very well after Being Human ended. He plays the very charismatic and broody lead, Ross Poldark, in the BBC’s recent historical drama Poldark (2015 -2018). That has much higher viewing figures than Being Human ever did, being a very mainstream kinda show - and he has a huge following of fans who swoon over all his shirtless scenes in Poldark. :D Though personally, Demelza's the one that does it for me in that show. It's actually a great drama, but dunno if you'd ever check it out as not your genre? He also played Kili in The Hobbit Trilogy of films - the 'attractive dwarf' ( Have you seen The Hobbit trilogy? I was gonna mention something else about his character, but do not want to spoiler.) I love Lenora Crichlow who plays Annie, she was fantastic in Brighton set lesbian drama Sugar Rush (2005-06). I love Russell Tovey as George too. He’s one of those faces who is all over British tv, before and after Being Human. They have both been on Doctor Who. Shan, you asked how old Mitchell is. In the opening scene to the episode, we see Mitchell as a soldier at war, and being turned. That was the First World War, 1914-1918. You can tell by the uniforms/helmets and the bayonet on his rifle. As Brits watching, we were expected to recognise that straight away, so this is not a spoiler! :D Plus, straight after that scene we see Mitchell, in the present, standing in the sun ( hey! Interesting eh?) looking at a war memorial for World War I & II. The weapons, uniform and warfare situation were definitely WW I , not WWII.

Ok, those 3 post were a lot!! Enough info/ response Shan?? Or way too much?? Lol :D

Nothing against the original series and all, but the US version inld more interesting, enticing and just plain beter in my personal opinion. From the opening shot to the end seeies shot it keeps you interested. Besides, the vampire is played by an actor you can't forget... He makes a hell of an impression.

I couldn't get past the pilot of the US version and the UK is one of my favourite shows
