This episode is pure greatness.

I just wanna recommend Nella Larsson's "Passing" to anyone interested in the issue. As for Angel, it seems he had a fairly varied life between gaining his soul, moving to America and becoming a hobo. I guess we can assume that he had finally succumbed completely to depression a couple of years before Whistler found him.

Maids at the time were almost always black, mostly because they weren't paid well and nobody else were willing to do such jobs, sort of like Mexican immigrants nowadays. (In response to the 'wrong color' remark from Angel).

Samantha Bailey

The bellhop wasn’t just on death row for hiding a body, two years after Angel left he went on a murder spree and shot both guests and employees in the hotel.

Alexis Cardarella

I assume the girl’s mom was quite possibly mixed (which was considered “colored” ie black in America at that time; still can be, but also not in a racist sense. Before it was strictly racist (look up one drop rule), hence her looking so white.

The title of the episode, “Are you now or have you ever been” is in reference to the famous words spoken by I believe Joseph McCarthey, a senator that led huge smear campaigns and accused people especially in Hollywood of being pro-communist. This was 1950s America, which along with racism and homophobia, anti-communism sentiment pretty much defined the ugly parts of American history. I think they mention this quote in that scene where they’re watching TV of McCarthey asking someone if they’re affiliated with the soviets. A lot of paranoia in that early Cold War time.....

Re: The money. It's conceivable that Angel could get a loan for the building, then "find" the money, which would be sort of a right of salvage at that point. Also, they pointed out that it's on the historical register, which means no buyer could make significant changes in the structure, which has made it really difficult for the developers to sell. Therefore, price goes down.

WB

He knew how to dress in the 1950s, but that’s not how you dress in the 2000s. Beyond that he was pretty much living a life without hope riddled with guilt so he didn’t care about how to dress at the time he first saw Buffy.

WB

I forgot how much I liked this episode since the first time I saw it.

your questions regarding the timeline of Angel is a bit....muddled. The writers didn´t take enough care to continuity. However the consensus is that he will revert back to a sewer rat

False. *SPOILERS* Angel's timeline make perfect sense. In Season 4 we see what was the event that drove him back to hobo-ism.

Nancy Nicolai

Yeah I believe that Angel being hanged bc Judy gives him up as"the killer"(which in the 1950's is very relevant bc that time in America was known as "the time of the red scare"where so many ppl were being accused of being communists by the US government especially in the entertainment industry & were blackballed or kept from working)but I think it was this hanging of Angel and the fact that he got burned trying to help someone that sent him back(with guilt to the streets and the rats but it's just my theory!!😞

Richard Lucas

I don’t think so. The consierge going on a murder spree was in 79 and what finally caused the hotel to close.

I’m wondering if serial numbers of cash from a bank was tracked in 1952 as it is today. Remember there were few if any computers then.

It's very sad, dear Miss After Show Reactions, that you missed the black family at the beginning: They weren't allowed to get a room in the hotel. You didn't see it because you weren't looking at the screen. Please tell me: What are you sometimes looking at on your right side? What's happening there?

Anonymous

And please cover your mouth with both hands when you are coughing! This way it will dampen the sound a little bit. Because coughing to the side doesn't make a difference, but covering the mouth with both hands does! (I'm very sorry that you have or had a cough, but it really hurts in the ears. Anyway: Get well soon!)

I'm still looking at the episode haha, I watch the episode through my recording program and if I look over to the side - I can see the media player open on my second monitor.
