Turns out Chrome crashes when location services are enabled but no telephony service is found on a telephony-enabled device.

Technically our X18S isn't a telephony-enabled device, but because the built-in sensors are hidden behind a dummy LTE modem it is treated like one.

Because of this I had to add a bit of extra code to the framework to ensure Chrome doesn't commit suicide.

How to install: Unpack the attached files using 7zip and follow the included instructions found inside README.txt. For those simply upgrading, please enter "NO" when asked whether you want to wipe userdata!

For those needing the Google Play Store: The PowKiddy X18S is a read-only partition device, which means flashing Google Play app packages (via a recovery) isn't possible. Magisk is shipped out-of-box though, allowing the install of system-less Google Play packages like MagiskGapps. The included README.txt contains a section explaining how to.

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. Due to the boot partition being signed, in-app updates of Magisk will render the device semi-bricked. Long story short: Don't update Magisk! When a new Magisk update gets released I will make sure to release a new build containing it!

Changelog

  • Fixed a crash in Google Chrome

Unfixable known issues (including fixable things that aren't up to me to fix)

  • The screen turns off while using HDMI output (PowKiddy uses this to hide the fact that their LCM/LCD rotation values are off, but there's little I can do to fix this unless someone at PowKiddy decides to send me the kernel sourcecode)
  • Updating Magisk or trying to uninstall it via the app semi-bricks the device because the bootloader expects signed boot images (don't do it)
  • The kernel wakes the device up every so and so minutes for a split second (its annoying, but there's little I can do to fix this unless someone at PowKiddy decides to send me the kernel sourcecode)
  • Windows Defender falsely reports X18STool.exe as a trojan (because it interacts with adb, fastboot and uname to get the things it needs to do done)

black, I was running some tests downloading the screen resolution through the command line. I was using the wm size 640x320 command to test performance and battery increase. In the system version of powkiddy, it was possible to decrease the resolution and the density command worked correctly command wm density 240*. In lineage, when I reduce the resolution, the screen touch goes crazy and the density command is not enough to fix it do you think you can fix this?

blackseraph

Unlikely. Density yes, resolution no. This stuff is tightly knit into the way HDMI works on this device and, as you already saw, messes with the 1280x1280 pixel digitizer.

understand. Thanks,

Hi BS, thanks for the OS update. I just did a fresh install of today's version. Now I'm trying to install the Google play store and I'm paranoid about hitting the update for Magisk per your warning. When I tap the Magisk icon, a grey OS prompt comes up and says: "Magisk/Upgrade to full Magisk to finish the setup. Download and install?/ Cancel OK" Do I press Cancel, or OK? So far I've just pressed Cancel and then it closes and nothing happens so I can't proceed with Magisk. Thanks!

I cant figure out how to extract these files as trying to do it all together just gives me useless files and trying individually just gives me an error, can anyone help? I cant figure any of this out as there is no tutorial to help.

blackseraph

Download them all into the same folder then unpack the first (lowest number) part.

Is there anyway to change the bootloader logo? The Lineage OS one is nice for the actual boot animation, but not seeing the PowKiddy bootlogo at all would be great

Would it be possible to add again the function of the red led flashing on the outside of the screen?

Anonymous

How can we help you get the source code?

blackseraph

I doubt you can but if you want to try your luck feel free to send out a X18S kernel source request to hushuhe2021@gmail.com.

I used the recommended method to install magisk... now I've got a boot loop :(

blackseraph

You clicked the install button inside the Magisk app. The README never told you to do that. Now you will have to restore using BeTools and repeat the installation procedure.

Hi, is there anypossibilty to disable rumble at boot?

It's 1AM right now and I got a shift in the morning, but if you want I can provide you direct support via TeamViewer after work. (19 hours from now) Just send me a message on the Retro Handhelds discord later today. Here's an invite: https://discord.gg/RetroHandhelds

blackseraph

Same to you then: hit me up on Discord today after work. I'm sure we can figure it out.

is there reason why wifi keep disconnecting

blackseraph

Mine works fine. Did you open the unit up by any chance? It's very easy to damage the WiFi antenna in this device.

Anonymous

No have not opened unit only had less than a week no other device in house loose connection Wi-Fi say connected but no internet connection

blackseraph

I have a similar issue on my actual phone but so far nothing of the sort on the X18S running LineageOS. I agree though... WiFi can be a difficult beast to tame.

Hi. Is there a possibility that the opengl driver from powkiddys last fw to be implemented on to the lineage? I experienced less 3d performsnce and some graphical errors in lineage vs ofw latest version. Vulksn, on the opposite performs ok IMHO. Thanks

blackseraph

We use the same drivers. If you see a difference could you send a comparison over via a direct message?

Hello Black, I only heard good things about your service for the x18s! I will try to install the OS today! My powkiddy doesnt charge unless I do a MMI charge test, the powkiddy email said that I could be firmware, you have any idea about it?

blackseraph

Out of the blue I don't but if you want we can get it hooked up to adb and take a look at it together via TeamViewer if you still suffer issues after the LineageOS install!

Anonymous

Thank you so much, I dont even get what you said, ill install it later today after I get my son to bed, ill come back to you in the next few days, if it works too, so you know.

Is the instructions still the same for Windows 11?
