I know. I'm jumping on a trend. I don't do it very often, but The Last of Us was actually a game I had really wanted to play for YEARS. I knew nothing about it, basically, and I decided to document my analysis of its storytelling as I go in a day-by-day.

It's a different level of storytelling. We often focus on the grander scheme of things. The things understand once we've finished it and look back. But what about the things we understand when we read/watch/play for the first time? Communicating those things is often more difficult, but it's also a lot more important. Most of the time, a single person will only play/read/watch whatever you make once, so seeing what you can communicate within that is important.

What did you think of The Last of Us? It's been long held up as the paragon of videogame storytelling. Let's see how true this is.

I've played The Last of Us a couple of times. And I can definitely say you got your analysis right. The dialogue between Joel and Ellie evolves as the game progresses. And through that dialogue, we see their relationship grow. Both characters represent two opposing views on the harsh world they live in, as well as an element that each is missing from their personality. Joel is the sinicism that, though harsh, has allowed him to survive for so long. And Ellie is the optimism one needs to look forward to the next day. When I first played the game, it mixed its environments, mechanics, and dialogue to make a narrative that kept me hooked the whole time. Sadly, the same can't said of the sequel. I won't drop spoilers here. But I can say is it's "good" at best. Gameplay is better than the first, the story doesn't live up the standard. The devs. try to tell another unique story, like the first game, but they make some poor narrative decisions that sacrifice character development in favor of dynamic perspectives. But it's poorly executed, and when combined with some terrible plot-points, the game has a salty-sour taste to it. (If that makes any sense.)

Please tell me we have a last of us 2 video coming our way? I would be super excited to see you analyze it because I feel like no one else could do a better job to analyze the depth of it than you. I’ve watched several videos from other people and they just aren’t quite nailing it to me.
