Regarding "Numbers" The Japanese research on improving magicians was divided among ten laboratories. The extended families that were produced by the research have a reference to the numbered laboratory in their names... the Ichijo are associated with laboratory #1, the Yotsuba with #4, the Kudou with #9, the Jumonji with #10, and so on. In addition to the 10 Master Clans (which are not necessarily just 1 family for each laboratory), there are 18 "Associate Families" making for a total of 28 key families of modern Japanese magicians. This will be elaborated on in Season 3, I expect, based on how Season 2 ends. The "Extras" are families who failed in a way that got them kicked out from the 28 families, and their number association was revoked ("stripped of their numbers"). Many of them do shady work for the 28 families. When this is explained in the novels, Tatsuya theorizes that Rin Ichihara may be from an Extra family, though it is not confirmed.
