Griff met Cobalt first at their school, Pectorala High, through unlikely means.

A new student at Little Pectorala High, Cobalt took a while to adjust. Commonly mocked for decking his locker like a comic book's paradise, wearing clothes slightly too big for his build, and differential cultural habits, he remained a social outcast for weeks. Eventually, the teachers notice, and nominate Griff to help him acclimate. As a respected member of the school's prefecture, Griff, initally reluctant, but understanding, invited him to a family dinner where his jovial parents help set Coby at ease. Griff's mother, Annette in particular, took a liking to Coby, namely for his politeness and well-rounded grades. A prominent sciences teacher in Pectorala High, she used her influence to move the pair into the same classes, subjects allowing. Their friendship was fully affirmed when Griff witnessed Coby being physically bullied by members of the school's rugby clique, something Griff was himself a part of. Infurated by their shoddy example, a well placed left hook was all that was needed to slow a chorus of jeers to a whimper. The damage Coby's locker suffered was superficial, but the psychological effects would haunt him for the remainder of his first term.

Not wanting to remain dependent on those stronger than him physically, Coby reached out to Griff for other options.

During his second term, Coby began attending gym with Griff, though he found some of the strenuous training difficult, namely resistance. Griff offered to spot with him, which while making the exercise more bearable, didn't really help his liking for the bench press. He introduced Coby to his skater friends after classes, figuring a more casual sport might suit Cobalt better. In a few short months, Coby got the hang of skateboarding for himself; grinding ollies, nollies and switching like a pro, he surpassed even Griff's skill. Despite his improved fitness, his shy demeanour remained.

Meanwhile, Griff focused on a variety of sports and physical training, namely swimming, rugby, and field activities. While not pursuing an athlete's career, the improvements to his health geared him for his dream job; being a personal trainer.

One evening, Coby towards the end of his high school tenure, shared his large collection of console games and comics with Griff, outing himself as a "nerd". This, being the primary reason for his bullying at Pectorala High. Much to Coby's surprise, Griff embraced the vast collection, appreciating much of his stock being "retro" in nature. The pair now having another activity to share, made game nights a regular activity in their friend circle. 

While not attending school, Griff worked with his uncle as an assistant at Howler Motors, a mechanic's shop. While not his job of choice, it paid well, and allowed him to work with a close family member while learning useful skills. Within a few years, he invested in a car for himself. 

Coby meanwhile, worked part-time at his father's restaurant, Costa Azul Pizzeria. Griff would regularly visit after work during late hours; Coby acccommodated with off-menu treats, the gesture often appreciated as Griff horked down plate after plate. It seemed natural that Coby slowly developed feelings for Griff in this situation. Of course, he wouldn't tell him this...

After graduation, the pair took a few years out of school to build up funds and work on their vocations. They visited various places together often, including nearby coastal cities; the industrious New Barking, and the university town, Glutessa. The vast subject list and campus size of Glutessa Academy left the two hungry with academic interest. Scholarships, while not available in troves, were offered to students with excellent grades and test results. Seen as a reach for the stars to Coby, but more of an offshoot gamble for Griff, the pair loosely discussed tests into the program., but never settled on planned submission. In a twist of his usual habits, Coby took charge and submitted to a test seven months prior to Griff. The latter, while unsure about his results, was also willing to try for Glutessa, if not just to stifle the financial downfall he'd surely have to pay from student loans. The pair kept their options open, lest they suffer disappointment. 

During Griff's 21st birthday at his home, Coby fell into the pool in the garden area, losing his shorts. To stymie his embarrassment, Griff jumped into the pool alongside him, also "losing his shorts". While the schadenfreude is shared, Coby appreciated the sentiment much more then he let on. The party continued with the guests shying off Griff's antics as just another way of making his friend feel welcome. Annette later that evening after the festivities, quizzed her son about his aloofness during his birthday. She could read between Coby's lines. The long-portioned gaze, tapping of index finger tips, and his immediate sunny disposition anytime he came to chat with him at the party. Perhaps in part to Annette's teasing, Griff came to realise he liked Coby as more than just a friend also. Not wanting to risk an end to their friendship however, he similarly hid his feelings. 

Coby received his results before Griff from Glutessa, with the university offering him a scholarship in Mechanical Engineering. Elated to share the news, he invites Griff over in LDIT. Griff, while happy for Coby, is worried that me might lose a close friend, and that he hasn't told him how he truly feels... until now. 

LDIT is the first reveal of Griff's feelings for Coby, and vice versa.
