Audiences who saw Apocalypse Now when it came out in 1979, did not see a scene in which the patrol boat crew arrives at a Medevac area, which has been decimated by a typhoon. This scene would be one of the toughest to shoot and would blur fiction and reality–I mean, the production design was pretty much done by a real typhoon.

And all this for a scene that would be cut from the theatrical release, put back in for the Redux version, and end up being the only sequence from the Redux version that does not appear in the Final Cut. We’ll explore the crazy story of filming this scene and see if we can figure out exactly why Coppola feels it doesn’t deserve to stay in the movie on this episode of Making Apocalypse Now.

Thanks so much for your continued support!

Great episode, love to see you going through it scene by scene like this

Hi Tyler, As always thank you so much for making these videos. I love going back into the madness of this film production, I keep being amazed by it. I love that Coppola just kept shooting this scene, even during a typhoon. You don't see that in any other film, that makes this scene extra special for me. I also believe that the sets from Kurtz Compound were destroyed and that this was another reason why Brando's scenes were delayed until somewhere in September 1976. Also a question Tyler, and you may have answered this in the episode. But what was the exact reason why the third Playboy bunny couldn't shoot her scene with Sheen? Was it because of the weather reports? And last Tyler for your next video, did you know that co-editor Walter Murch came up with the sampan scene? He suggested it to Coppola in December 1976, when they came back for a Christmas break. It's really interesting that he came up with the scene. He mentions it during the audio commentary and in an interview. Thank you again, Tyler, Best Jacob Joosse

Glad you liked it! I believe the only source I could find for the third vignette was in the commentary. I think they couldn't film it because they ran out of time. Very interesting about Murch coming up with the sampan scene! I'll have to look into that.
