The reason Sergeant Martin was giving Webster the evil eye was that Webster accidentally got Martin put on the patrol by getting Sergeant Malarkey off of it. They needed a Sergeant to run things so they picked Martin. So Martin was pretty furious at Webster for that. Also there's a Tom Hanks cameo, sort of, the screams of the german coming across the river is actually Tom Hanks screaming. So Winters was promoted from Captain to Major. I believe Winters has been the XO or Executive Officer (Executive Officer means second in command) of 2nd Battalion for a while now. That's normally the job of a major. So for several months Winters has been second in command of the 2nd Battalion, now he's been given the rank that corresponds with his role in the battalion. He should have been given that promotion a while ago. After Major there's Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel. Sink the old guy is the Colonel and leader of the whole 506th regiment. I know it's a lot to remember, but the thing to take from this is Winters is moving up in the world.
