Oops! Now they're both 50's housewives!

A tale about the importance of trigger discipline. Sequel to this commission for Smokey. Check the link for the accompanying short story.

I enjoyed revisiting this universe! Continuing an old piece is always interesting. We've all seen this in movies: continuing a story organically is tricky if it wasn't planned in advance. The work has to contend with creative decisions made before anyone knew there would be a sequel.

I tried to place the camera in panel 1 behind the table and frame our couple with the feast in the foreground:

I like the idea in theory, but wasn't very confident that the foreground objects would be recognizable as a chicken and wine bottle. Also, technically, the chicken legs are facing away from the wine in the original (and what happened to the candle?):

In the end I moved both women in front of the table. This maintains their relative positions throughout the story. Lighting them from the back and keeping the blonde on the left also allowed for the final panel's passionate kiss, which wouldn't have worked quite as well if their positions were flipped.

Speaking of, I used this panel by Juanjo Guarnido as reference:

It's from Blacksad #1 (written by Juan Díaz Canales) and puts my work to shame haha. That said, I am proud of my ability to adjust the pose to make it less about them falling as they undress and more about one hanging off of the other. If you're interested in an exquisitely illustrated noir furry detective story, I can't recommend Blacksad enough.

Pencils and inks, along with more reference photos below. Originally, her headphones disappeared and the earrings materialized from thin air. I only realized I could combine the two when I was coloring!

Hope you enjoyed! <3
