In the Scene where Maomao and Jinshi are talking about death, I really love her saying "It is not about would or wouldn't, It is about can or cannot" in response to him saying, that he "would" never order her death. It really highlights her attitude towards the power dynamics in an interesting way.

So they never really touch on it in the anime, but the reason the doctor is such a quack is because the rear palace doctors still have to be eunuchs. And turns out, good doctors don't really benefit from that at all.

No human transmutation for Maomao in this age.

I am currently, and slowly, reading a book called "Salt: A World HIstory", by Mark Kulansky. Which talks about the influence the production and transportation of Salt have had upon humanity, our culture and where we have settled. Not very far into it, but one of the early chapters talks about the importance of salt in Ancient China (As in 2000 BC to Year 0 Ancient). Among others the tax on salt and iron was an oft-discussed subject, and it was repealed and reinstated several times throughout the ages. It was among other things used to fund the Great Wall. It also lead to the discovery of using gas as a tool to heat the plates they used for heating brine pools as part of their salt production, in 100 AD. As they realized some salt pits that had been dug some 300 years earlier weren´t cursed, as they originally thought, but rather emitted natural gasses that were poisonous and burnable. So they used bamboo tubes to transport it to sheds, where it was lit on fire and used to boil the water away from the brine. Not from that book, but they apparently also used the gas to heat their buildings. But overall having access to it have been pretty important for humanity, and in these modern times, it can be pretty difficult to remember just how much work was put into not just gathering it, but transporting it as well. Just one of those small things that one rarely thinks about, but which have had a great influence on pretty much all of human development. Not very far in the book, but so far it is pretty interesting, a very unique perspective on history. Was just reminded of it, as this episode also deals with salt and decided this was as good a place as any to do a little writeup on it. Seeing that its setting is based on historical China.

5:20 Just as someone in the industry that works in a liquor store, it is sad to see customers progress over time in their alcoholism and because of the culture against shaming, I'm not allowed to comment and am still supposed to sell what they bring to the counter as long as they aren't impaired while making the purchase (I have a BASSET cert, and Absolutely put my foot down if I feel they are trying to purchase while legally impaired) Still it hurts to see the progression of drinking as regulars go from shots to pints to bottles and handles....... I've got my own demons, and have faced that dragon a few times before so I do know how difficult it is, especially with familial enablers.. I ain't sinless, just redeemed... It really is just a sorrow to see people drink to numb pain rather than to enjoy bliss.......

Salt poisoning is a particular scary one the main reason you die from it when you ingest so much of it in a short time like Alicia said is because you dehydrate. Its the same reason you cant drink ocean water besides the bacteria you cant urinate all the salt out because you kidneys can process that much salt out of you at a time. But that being said we do need salt not enough of it and it can kill us as well. If your wondering how much salt is too much the Dietary Guidelines for Americans at the very least says less than 2,300 mg per day for adults.
