So if I recall correctly, you are very much onto something about the happiness of the Christmas episode supposed to set up the pace for a darker moment afterward. The anime did something very wonky here and switched two arcs from the manga. I feel like they wanted the big arc to be the finale of the season, but it ended up messing with the pacing in many people's opinion.

Its because Japan didn't like the ending arc and since anime is made for the Japanese people mainly they focused on the stuff they liked more and less on what they didn't like
