The scene with Eleanor and Vane where she tries to convince him. She admits that they are alike in some ways, that he was right about that, but this moment again also highlights their differences. She wants legitimacy, and the stability that will bring to Nassau, but that’s just not something Vane wants. It’s something he can’t really even wrap his mind around - not because he’s incapable, but because it just isn’t what he seeks or can imagine seeking. And Vane’s idea that England will not want to try and take back Nassau…well, we have our own historical knowledge to say that isn’t true. But it’s also just wishful thinking. The idea that the English Empire would give up on getting Nassau back is laughable. I do feel for him when he holds Eleanor’s face in his hand though. She’s already made her choice. And nothing he’s said will change her mind. That’s why she kisses him when she does. It is an answer to his question, just not the one he thinks it is. Back on the ship with Jack. Shoutout to Toby Schmitz, he’s always great but I think his work this episode has shown a lot we haven’t seen from his character before. Not just the physical side of it, but the desperation to not lose what he has gained. Anyway, love the fight between him and the other captain. It’s desperate and a big gamble on Jack’s part. He knew he just had to get one good slash in the right place, and it was pretty touch and go for a moment there, but he pulled through in the end. And he managed to turn the tide in his favor as well. We also see Jack use storytelling to his advantage, lying about what the other captain had been planning to do in order to sway the men from the prize crew to his side. Seeing Jack with blood all over his face feels weird, it’s a much less natural sight than it is with Flint haha.

Good conversation between Billy and Dufresene. Highlighting what we have seen in this show, and what Billy himself experienced as far as how England will treat them. “We aren’t criminals. We aren’t even men! We’re animals.” Or monsters, you could say. Really great to see how that has been a consistent thread, and it contrasts with Vane’s absolute belief that England won’t come for Nassau. Though of course we also learn the circumstances of how he got free, and that adds another complication on top of all of this: they could trade Flint in return for nine pardons. “You seem unconcerned. If I understand correctly, the stakes of the upcoming vote are significant. What exactly are you doing?” “I’m seeming unconcerned.” Hahaha I love that. The rest of the conversation Flint and Silver have…I think the fact that Flint says the gold is “a priority” rather than “the priority” makes a difference to him., at least going by the look on John’s face. Haha, I forgot Silver didn’t know Max is the new brothel madam. But it’s a lot of fun having these two interact again. This whole thing started with Max and Silver plotting together over the schedule page, so any time they interact it feels quite interesting. And it’s no surprise he can take Max’s basic outline of a plan - that Logan and Charlotte ran away together - and add on more compelling details to help sell it. It’s not unlike what he has been doing for Flint already. “Any of the men? Aren’t you one of the men on his crew?” I love that Max noticed that, because she is one of the only characters who probably would have. Just a good way to highlight how perceptive she is. And we end on Eleanor, enacting her plan. Stealing keys from Vane and sneaking into Abigail’s cell to free her, though we cut to black before we actually see anything else from there. Another great episode! Really can’t wait for us to get through the rest of season two, it’s quite the ride.

BTW you should probably watch 8,9 and 10 together... well 9 and 10 definitely . I mean you don't have to , but you will want to 😀

Good episode but on rewatch it's probably the weakest one of the season. Apart from the stuff with Jack everything that happens is basically just a setup for the next episode.

"No women" fucking Jack lmao, I thought he was gonna say "the freeing sound of the sea unveiling endless possibilities" or something like that. Also the way he speaks about his newly gained captaincy and how it might have cost him Anne... his expression in that scene is heartbreaking, I adore them

I love how much Milena loves Flint. I get it. I felt the same way. #Team Flint for LIFE

Watching the Black Sails brain rot taking over them in real-time has been great fun

It's great to see you guys give so much deserved love for Flint. He is among my top five all time favorite characters in any medium. Of course much of this is because Toby Stephens and his amazing performance, but he is also wonderfully written. One of the more complex characters of pop culture in my opinion. Season 2 is definitely a step up from Season 1, and it just keeps building and building to a ridiculous crescendo.

Toby Stephens' performance of Captain Flint is no joke my favorite live action performance of all time. Every rewatch of the show solidfies it. Flint/McGraw is already such a captivating character, but his acting really catapults it over the top. He sells the sadness and anger inside him so well. He IS Flint

cosmotron

Agree on both counts. Toby Stephens is so incredible in this role, but the writing is just as strong. And while s1 is still good TV, it just can't compare to how good everything else that follows is.

I can't believe he didn't win every acting award ever for his performance here, because he deserved it.
