Flanagan hype! When I watched this episode I couldn't stop humming the 7th Symphony for an whole day

TeaDrinker3000

This type of show doesn't appeal to me but you can bet I'm gonna watch the intro anyways because the intros have been hilarious lately

Anonymous

I watched this show over the last week. One episode a day. Loved it. Really excited the LM's reactions.

Orr Malus

Are they excited for Mark Hamill because they're Star Wars nerds? Or because they're Batman nerds??

TeaDrinker3000

To answer your question about the episode being titled "A midnight dreary", that's taken from the opening line of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. The word dreary means bleak, or dull.

Worry about Flanagan being able to capture Poe’s understated tone Hoping the show doesn’t feel like a less trashy American Horror story season with a focus on Poe fan fiction compilations Not a fan of the music choices so far in the show or the times the music is played (as far as wanting a good Poe adaptation) Love most of Mike Flanagan's work, his stories feel like a more streamlined Stephen King without the weird tangents or occasional exaggerated playful tone. Flanagan is usually only exaggerated to ally in a dramatic way with more typical scares that aren’t played for laughs Really love his framing and focus but the choices around editing and sound effects can be distracting Thankfully We’ve seen some longer scenes this episode that do seem to follow one specific character through a variety of emotions with some fun contradictions (the kind of character moments that would provide an internal narration if this were a written story)

RPSiege

Sadly I don’t think they recognized him. The scene from right before the thumbnail showed Mary McDonnell “Madam President” from Battlestar Galactica, and that’s who they’re going wild for. He’s also Ozai from ATLA!

okay, gonna nerd out a bit, bare with me. i think you got your poets and writers confused. poe was a famous poet too but he was mostly known for his prose, especially his short stories. it's not a spoiler because if you know his work you can know it but each episode is losely based on one of his short stories and the fall of the house of usher is another famous short story. it's actually impressive what mike did with the show because he managed to use many of his short stories and mix it all together. theres many references to the poems too, like annabel lee (which was his last poem if i remember correctly). due to me being very familiar with his poetry and short stories i kinda spoiled myself with many things but i still enjoyed this a lot. also, emily dickinson was A poet, i really don't remember if she wrote anything but poems and i get it... poetry is not for everyone, but i do love dickinson. dickinson (the show) was not great but i enjoyed it ngl. ayo (sydney from the bear) appears in a couple of episodes and i think she wrote and directed a couple too. anyway, now that i'm done with the intro... i'm going to finally watch the full.

space1999

Do you feel the show slows down a bit going forward? I’m a little worried, felt the first episode was super exposition heavy and trying to fit a ton of stuff in (also pretty fast paced) I feel like some of the set ups seem a little obvious if you’re familiar with his work and i’m hoping it doesn’t just feel like an American Horror Story fanfic with as many references and ideas shoved together as possible

Orr Malus

I know, their gender alone is proof enough they have no idea who Mark Hamill is. I just thought it was funny that he was in the thumbnail even though there's a 100% chance they weren't reacting to him.

HenryM

The joker/jester in the car at the end is another nod to one of Poe's short stories. Jumpscare aside, I found it pretty amusing, especially considering that Mark Hamill, the voice of The Joker himself, was standing right there

If you're partial to movies or shows where the director puts his wife as the lead, any chance you're going to check the Resident Evil movies? The director met his wife while working on the first one (back in 2002) and his whole career now revolves around making movies with his wife as the star. Particularly interesting is the 5th movie of the series where he has his wife dressed up head to toe in skin tight latex plus knee-high leather boots with 7 inch heels fighting mutant zombies. The man is living the dream.

Wallas

Wow, looking forward to it ...yeah, I also thought about Succession but 10 times worse and more exaggerated haha, I thought this was the most different series from Mike, more gore, funny and sensual, I really liked it

character list so you can be less confused roderick - head of the family madeline - head of the family and roderick sister then we have the children ordered from older to younger frederick (freddie/froderick) - played by henry thomas, whchi was the father in both hill house and midnoight mass and the uncle in bly manor... also the kid in e.t. which is not related but still funny tamerlane (tammy) played by samantha sloyan (perfect penny killed my husband) which is obviously bev in midnight mass... what an enchanting woman and also had a small part in hill house. she's in more projects of mike but you haven't watched those. victorine, played by the wonderful t'nia miller, hannah grose in bly manor. napoleon usher (leo) played by rahul kohli, sheriff in midnight mass and owen in bly manor. camille, played kate siegel... no need to say more, she's been in every project of mike you've seen prospero (perry), the youngest, played by sauriyan sapkota. he was in the midnight club by mike, but you haven't watched that one. then we have arthur pym, the attorney of the usher family, played by the famous mark hamill. we have juno, the new and young wife of roderick played by the amazing ruth codd who also was amazing in the midnight club. the bartender, verna, played by carla gugino (plase, marry me ma'am) who was olivia crane in hill house and the narrator (not going to spoil the name in case someone wants to watch it and suffer) in bly manor. zach gilford (riley flynn in midnight mass) and willa fitzgerald (her first mike flanagan project... also, please marry me ma'am too) are young roderick and madeline. morella usher (freddie's wife was also in midnight mass but i don't remember the name. and finally lenor, the only granchild, played by kyliegh curran. she had a part in doctor sleep. amazing horror movie of mike that is a sequel to the shining totally recomended. auguste dupin, the lawyer who's talking to roderick, played by carl lumbly. first mike project i believe. minor roles are roderick annd madelines mom and dad actually played by both dudleys from hill house but more recently seen as sarah and joe collie in midnight mass. tammy's husban bill was also in midnight mass but i don't remember his name there. he was the dude who repaired the boats and followed bev like a lap dog. and that's all i can think of at this hour... sorry for the LONG comment. hope someone find this useful.

sand_fl

i mean, i don't want to spoil anything to you or them. how many episodes have you watched? i did like it a lot. not my favourite project of mike but still a solid one. yes, the first one is the one heavy on exposition and fast paced. the rest are not as fast paced in my opinion, still, it's still a short show so with only 8 episodes some things feel fast paced. i believe that if you know poe's work you will enjoy it and be that dicaprio meme (you know, the one where he's pointing at the tv) but either way you can still understant and enjoy without being familiar with it. i don't believe it's like AHS at all, but i guess it also depends on the person who watches it.

sand_fl

ps: forgot this one. teen madeline was young shirley in hill house. but she's older now. took me a while till i recognized her. i wish mike brings back mackenna grace (young theo) which is almost and adult already... i feel old or one of the twins for a future project. also victoria pedretti, i miss her. i want more of her.

sand_fl

funny you mention poirot and agatha christie lola, edgar allan poe is actually considered the invertor or the defective fiction, august dupin being his detective. you can see how mike introduced him in this show.

Aj

I don't think there's a creator whose work I dislike more than Flanagan's (apart from maybe Aaron Sorkin's) and the first episode of this highlights why. I'll give it a go but not a promising start.

cosmotron

Wtf does their gender have to do with whether or not they recognize Mark Hamil?

Orr Malus

I'm not sure it's all Flanagan's fault, he's a paint-by-numbers employee: take an already existing famous story, place it in a modern setting, add a bunch of leftist talking points like rich-man bad or gay-man good, pad a 2 hour story so it lasts 10 hours, repeatedly recast the same crew because it's cheaper, and so on. The title is a cheap marketing move as well: "The Fall of The House of Usher". The whole short story gets exhausted in the first 20 minutes of the first episode. Flanagan might have just pitched a "Succession + ghosts" type of show but Netflix made him associate it with Edgar Allan Poe because the movie "Pale Blue Eye" had moderate success. It's the new American Horror Story. It's not to say AHS was all terrible but this formulaic soulless approach gets tedious real fast. Just another example of a reason why Netflix should be avoided like the plague.

Aj

@Orr Malus Yeah, I probably agree, especially with that first paragraph.

Orr Malus

People know Mark Hamil from either Star Wars or Batman The Animated Series. Neither are things girls care about. Duh.

yesss i’m so happy u started this, watched it with my gf recently and it was far better than expected, didn’t love midnight mass when i watched it so this was a very nice surprise

Anonymous

i also thought the music felt like succession, i had to check to see if the composer is nicholas britell but it wasn’t

Brendan

The thumbnail made me think you were super excited for Mark Hamill but I don't think you even noticed him lol

refo44

I still haven't seen this show but now it picked my interest
