Just want to comment on Carver and the suggestion that his previous characterization in regards to the kids was unprovoked or came out of nowhere. I don't think it's necessarily that Carver had some special spot in his heart for kids that prompted his behavior, it's that Carver respects Colvin and is trying his best to make Colvin's project work because Colvin has always had his back. If you go back and watch season 3 from the start again, you can see from the very beginning how much Carver respects Colvin, and you can see throughout the entire season the ways in which Carver is either defending Colvin or trying to do what he feels will keep the project afloat. Colvin is attempting to mentor the younger officers under him, but Carver takes to the mentorship while many of the other officers like Herc dismiss it. This divergence between Herc and Carver can be seen at the very end of 3x2 during the scene where Colvin gives his brown paper bag speech to the room full of officers. Herc looks annoyed during the speech while Carver looks engaged. This shortly after Herc boasted to Colvin about beating the 14 year old kid that ran while Carver looked sheepish about it. Right after Colvin gives his speech about the new approach they were going to take in the district, the "brown paper bag" approach that would lead to Hamsterdam, Herc and Carver are seen driving in a car patrolling the district, and Herc is annoyed and angry about the new direction, asking if they aren't going to be busting up hand to hands anymore, then what are they going to be doing? Usually Carver is lock step with Herc. Usually he would agree with him and add his two cents. But instead of saying anything, Carver just looks out the window at the drug crews on the corners, and then the episode ends. From this point, we are meant to see that Carver sees something in Colvin's vision, or sees some deficiencies in the way they have been doing things, the "Western District way," and is willing to see what this project will bring. He isn't willing to openly defend it, not yet, so he remains silent. But eventually he does see that Hamsterdam is working, and he openly defends it to the other officers who are basically threatening mutiny. This was just one of many fires Carver was trying to put out through the season, from his own ranks, but also various issues in Hamsterdam itself. When it came to the little hoppers, Carver saw that as a crack in Hamsterdam, and I think he saw his solution as plugging a leak. The little lookouts and runners are the youngest kids in the drug game and Hamsterdam completely fucked them out of the cash, but still brought them to the area, which undeniably would be seen as a bug in the system. Carver reports what is going on in Hamsterdam directly to Colvin, there are a few scenes where Colvin asks Carver directly what is he doing about various problems that he reports. I think Carver was smart and empathetic enough towards Bunny's vision to identify what was wrong with dozens upon dozens of kids roaming Hamsterdam aimlessly and how he could fix it. What's funny is he did probably get a little cash in it for himself himself (he smirked when he brought up his reimbursement for the basketball hoop and travel expenses,) but he also saw it as a win win for everyone if he gave the hoppers something to do, and distributed the money around. He is Colvin's right hand on Hamsterdam, and his main job in Hamstersdam is to keep the peace, make sure there is no violence, and that the business is orderly without complication, and I think Carver wanted to put his best foot forward on that front out of loyalty for Colvin And better yet not just loyalty, but also because he doesn't want to let Colvin down. I think he genuinely wants to hear "good job" from Colvin. Throughout their conversations in season 3 there are many instances where you can see that Carver just wants to impress Colvin and make a good impression on him, which I think is what makes Colvin's speech to him this past episode land harder for Carver, knowing he was doing all of this legwork to make Hamsterdam work, but he still wasn't being the police that Bunny could admire or respect. I think it's a wake up call for Carver, harking back even to what Daniels once told him, that he would have to decide if it's going to be him or the work.

...and I'm adding a second comment just to make sure that you won't be able to see the spoiler comment as one of the first two comments when you open Patreon.

I never equated Herc with Carver. Carver seemed like a better person than Herc but occasionally he was brought down to Herc's level due to his bad influence. What Carver needed earlier was a mentor figure in the same way that Freamon mentored Prez. He mostly didn't get that so he was stuck under the bad influence of Herc.

Herc's an honest dumb guy and thinks Carver is very smart. Carver is a little more intelligent but has an ego and hanging with Herc all the time he's under the impression he's way smarter than he actually is. Carver can't admit to how dumb Herc is otherwise his own ego will take a bump, and Herc can't see how dumb Carver is because he's dumber.

Anoncatman - why give spoilers away? Not cool at all.

You guys are great. New patreon subscriber mostly for your The Wire reactions (and have gone back in your catalog for “Breaking Bad” [and watched you reactorverse appearance]… and have zero concerns about your opinions there…lol). A show I think you would both love is “The Queen’s Gambit. It’s less action-y than some of your shows, but it has an emotional core that I think you’d love. And Lola, there will be kids upcoming in The Wire. I hope you don’t check out. It’s not always easy, but it’s the beating heart of the series. And there is hope to be found there. Love you both.

I’ve watched that Rawls reaction about a dozen times now…lol!
