The best ending to an episode ever. The raw emotion from BOTH men is felt throughout the ENTIRE scene!!! Avons statement “Not hard enough for this right here and maybe, maybe not smart enough for them out there!!” Perfectly encapsulates Stringer in every sense. The fact that Avon can see Stringer so clearly and yet didn’t see Stringer killing D is so good because you can truly see the trust he had in Stringer that something like that NEVER crossed his mind. Also Avon’s instant reaction to be to hurt Stringer even though he was just shot says a lot about Avon as well. Stringer only told Avon here because he was upset that Avon called him soft essentially and not as smart as he thinks he is and he wanted to prove to Avon that not only was he “hard” enough to kill someone, but that he was also smart enough to make the decision and pull it off without Avon knowing. His ego wouldn’t allow Avon to look down on him so he told on himself, which to me is so pathetic and yet so Stringer to do it that way. Avon and Stringer to me undoubtedly had the BEST, most intriguing and most complex relationship in all of The Wire!! And this scene cemented it for me, the dead silence, both knowing there’s nothing left to say and a line has been crossed, we can’t go back to what we used to be, beautifully scripted.

That scene with McNulty and Brianna is so fucking good. One of my favorite episodes

You probably figured it out from editing, but just to make it more clear: We did see earlier a throwaway line from Avon saying to 'get Devonne on it'. The reason that they could tell it was a setup was because they had someone sit in the takeout restaurant, and they saw that one guy walk in and order sandwiches and drinks for 4 people even though he was alone, which is why Marlo's guy in the car says 'We'll see if the car that he got into stays for longer or leaves soon, if it doesn't leave we know we're onto something.' Then they see Devonne look twice at the parked car, and finally see the window roll down and one of the people inside throws their wrapper that their sandwich was in out the back window.

Your guys' reasons for hating Tommy are silly. A politician has to sit down and converse with people he disagrees with, making him a hypocrite? Dude, get a grip on reality

Both for the previous episodes discussion and indeed this one too: it's going to be incredibly interesting to see the girls reaction to particular events coming up based on the reactions/theories discussed.

They didn't really even give him a chance as soon as they recognized his face. If he's trying to make a positive change then his motives for it don't really matter too much. Are people really supposed to wait for a purely selfless idealist who can somehow keep gaining political power without doing anything dirty.

This discussion delivered because I could tell one of the reasons they thought the Avon/Stringer storyline could last until season 5 was because people told them how good season 4 was, so to see them finally get to the point where they're like 'wait, if the story ends soon....what happens in season 4?!' was so satisfying

Americans are a high-trust society and as such they firmly believe in the rule of law, it's pretty much an idol to them. You two girls come from an ex-communist state (as do I) and thus have a completely different mentality on how society should work. This is why I think you're misunderstanding the reason why half the precinct was against Bunny's actions. They were against Bunny because he made them go against the law, not because they actually wanted to beat up kids. There's a movie that makes my point perfectly called "The Untouchables". Long story short, a bunch of cops kill a bunch of illegal alcohol dealers during the Prohibition age and are hailed as heroes. When the chief was asked "What would you do when they legalize alcohol?" he responded: "I'll go get a drink". So it's not about dealing in illegal substances or about good guys vs bad guys. It's about the principle of policemen enforcing the law, regardless if the law is just or unjust. The police in Bunny's unit were in cognitive dissonance: either Bunny was in the wrong in which case they were in the wrong as well for going against the law, or Bunny was in the right in which case the law was in the wrong in which case they were in the wrong for being cops. Catch-22. Ex-communist states in Eastern Europe see the law not as an idol to be worship but more like a series of "suggestions". What communism has taught people is how to circumnavigate dumb laws without anyone getting in trouble. There are allusions to these two types of mentality in the show as well. Remember when Herc called Carver a communist? Even Avon's and Stringer's relationship also revolves around these two types of mentality budding heads, with hints sprinkled all throughout this season in particular.

Appreciate you making this distinction about American perception of law I like you bringing up the Untouchables because of the role prohibition played in American society. People made far more money selling alcohol during prohibition including many legislators and government officials who sold it, the CIA as recently as the 90s admitted that they sold cocaine to black Americans in inner cities to fund Latin American guerilla armies the CIA was really in control of. The people who hold the government and law in such high regard neglect to address how often people within it manipulate the law for their own gain It’s honestly wild how this is an accepted attitude in the US, so many people constantly cite the constitution as being perfect (people literally worship it and say it should never be changed) when in reality it was written with the intention of being amended as it has been repeatedly throughout history

“Is there some reason why we pointed to this girl?” When you are done with the series, google “Deedee the wire”. Thanks for doing the wire. You amaze.
