i just spent one of my free days binge watching you two. i finally catched up with the bear and cyberpunk. the wire and hxh will take more time... maybe even vacations lol the way i love this show but damn it's stressful to watch. thought it makes me kinda jealous because as stressful as it is it's kinda like a found family. the restaurant where i work is just pure cahos and it's full of idiots. mainly the boss and many of the clients but also a few colleagues. the other day i had to cover with my own money a dish because the client said she didn't order it (which she did) but she ate it and then said she would not pay for it because she didn't order it. i have to pay for the fucking dish and then hear my boss joke about it all day and keep asking me why i looked so pissed.

cosmotron

It was so funny to me seeing you guys like Tina when she’s probably one of the characters I’ve struggled with the most lol. But that’s about my own experience working in restaurants- I’ve known some Tina’s, and they’re not fun to work with. But I imagine she will eventually grow on me too.

cosmotron

Yeah I wasn’t sure I could keep watching after the first episode - I’m out of the restaurant industry now, and it felt like it was giving me fucking flashbacks lol. I didn’t even work in a fancy restaurant like Carmy, and I still had that experience of throwing up every day before work. I’m much happier just cooking at home.

Anonymous

On the topic of Pete, its mostly because he's too normal compared to the rest of them who had to deal with much more hardships and family drama growing up. They're "rougher" than he is so they are off put by his demeanor as a person.

sand_fl

@cosmotron i don't work at a very fancy restaurant either, but it's franchised and you know how those work, a fucking pain in the ass. yeah, i've had to take a bathroom break or two just to throw up ngl... not a great experience. and let me tell you that working with a fucking unifor that consists of black trousers and black polo shirt and having a fucking terrace where the sun si relentless... a nightmare. i feel like i'm melting half of the time and the other half i feel like i'm about to implode.

Kara

It reminds me a lot of my first job where the conditions were awful and everything was fast-paced live and stressful but the trauma bonded us workers so closely lol. Lots of us are still close friends to this day.

Kara

There's that line from the battle rap in 8 Mile which is like: "His real name is Clarence, and Clarence's parents have a real nice marriage". I think about that a lot, like: not being from a bad / broken home environment is a negative for a lot of people... I definitely had bad feelings about the posh/less poor kids in school lol.

space1999

Side note: Americans who are Italian or Polish or Irish often come from poor immigrant families who migrated to the US around the turn of the century. We see this in The Wire with the Sobatka’s and their church, these are generations of poor blue collar workers who have been treated as third class citizens and have clung tightly to their community. Until recently a lot of these white skinned immigrants weren’t viewed as “white Americans” There’s a great book about classism and ethno racial politics that outlines why American barbers for the longest time weren’t trained to cut curly hair. The industry didn’t wanna support anyone with curly hair because if their hair was curly it often meant they were of or related to people of “lower status” (Irish people, black people, Jews)

space1999

Feel this hard, like I think for me and a lot of people I knew growing up it was just easy to direct your anger at the ones who had it much easier. I think it’s so fitting that Pete jumps into the conversation and it dies. Even Tina with Sydney

space1999

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to work in a kitchen alongside someone who’s behaving in a rude, passive-aggressive way. Appreciate their discussion, trying to empathize with and read Tina’s situation

cosmotron

@Lil Don075 man you have a sad life harassing someone like this in patreon comments

space1999

Oof, I wish, haven’t actually had champagne. Not into alcohol Appreciate you being my cheerleader tho bro, replying to every comment I post for the last few weeks Don’t have money but am happy to live rent-free in your head

Anonymous

@Lil Don075 Totally uncalled for to post something like that. space1999's comment was really interesting.

space1999

Honestly @Lil Don075 when I know you’re gonna stalk me and tell me to stfu every single time I comment (going on 3 weeks now) that does the opposite and makes me wanna keep commenting @cosmotron @Damien Fenton appreciate you

cosmotron

Yeah, it’s not a good time. There are shitty people in any work environment, but something about the inherently high stress nature of restaurant work really seems to bring it out in people. And then those who are in charge can sometimes be worse, like Camry’s previous boss. A lot of the shitty bosses will really act like kings of their own little world. I remember my first job as a teen was at a local burger joint, and after working there a little while it became clear the boss had a hair trigger temper. Sweet one moment and then yelling at you the next. One time he misunderstood what I wrote on a ticket and it resulted in a messed up order: he screamed and swore at 16-year-old me for like a solid ten minutes while I just stood there and cried.

cosmotron

Yeah, specifically like how in touch he is with his emotions too I think. Guy says more or less what he feels and Carmy and Ritchie are inherently uncomfortable with it lol.

Kara

Great input! Jeremy Allen White is soooo good in this. I expect/hope it goes down as a defining role a la Walter White or Don Draper. I wanna shoutout Ayo Edebiri who does an incredible job as Sydney, I will literally watch anything she is in from now on

You're waiting for me to call your dumbass out, I know. @cosmotron @damien fenton F you too.

Kara

Great reaction! I don't have much to add this week except I love how much you're loving the show already, only 4 episodes in. I think batching the episodes makes sense. Others have mentioned this but at this point, my assumption was they don't like Pete because he's nice and kinda corny. He's not "edgy" or traumatised lol, he's just some goofy normal dude that married Sugar and they unfairly resent that haha I love how established everyone's dynamic is by this point. It's a super economical show, no wasted moments. They all feel so real!

Kara

Within 10 seconds of closing this chrome tab, I will forgot who you are

Shivering King Banana

I'm gonna imagine the 75 in your name is your birth year and that your a close to 50 year old man trolling the internet. Very sad.

space1999

@cosmotron I think you hit the nail on the head, it’s like he’s at peace with himself and his place in the universe and the three of them just aren’t

Anonymous

Yes, I was born in the year 075. Very astute of you. You and space1999 are very studious...morons.

space1999

Agree so hard! Been a minute since I’ve seen a show with characters who felt so honest and vulnerable

Charlotte Drolet

@Lil Don075 you are so embarrassingly lame! Like you fucking ape, kill yourself already. You know you want to!

Charlotte Drolet

Like really, I haven't even read all the crap you write. I'm just tired of coming to the comment section and seeing just you being rude and harassing Space and others. Like you whiny, weak fuck, I will be your huckleberry! Stop getting on here crying like a whore, you pathetic fuck! Killing my vibe and shit, you dumpster juice!

Anonymous

as for the awkward phone call between carmy and pete a few eps ago i think its sort of implied carmy burned pete while cooking (hence why pete’s doctor gave him cream). pete is well meaning but his vibe is closer to waspy white collar than it is rugged blue collar chicago guy and so his friendliness comes off either corny or insincere to the family (unfairly so id add)

HenryM

@Charlotte Drolet easy there, the guy's being an asshole but that's a bit much

Charlotte Drolet

You respect people. I don't care if you agree with their ideals or not. That is what makes a society. You agree to disagree. But what he does is just weird and insane and he killing my vibe!He wants negative and smoke and I'm the asshole to give it him.

HenryM

That transition to Ritchie yelling at Jimmy fucking floored me lmao, the writers know how to balance comedy and drama moments really well

HenryM

They give you so much in just half an hour, it's a perfectly paced show imo

Anonymous

I don't respect obnoxious clowns who view life and people by what color you are, what you identify as or how much money you have. Damn space1999, you have some loyal "comrades". Niggas on patreon telling people to go kill themselves😁

space1999

Appreciate you wanting to call people out for shitty behavior to others @Charlotte Drolet , not gonna tell you how to act or feel but wanna say am personally trying to not give them too much energy and hope you don’t feel like you have to They wanna be cussed out so they can feel justified for acting like a child, they want the smoke but they’re not worth it Hope we can all just keep enjoying the channel and Patreon, LM brought us here cause they’re thoughtful and sensitive and seem like legitimately nice people It’s an old white man going on Patreon, getting offended when people talk about race and class. Man is literally calling people “niggas” unironically, not worth a response

Pete is a middle class dork, probably from the suburbs, so outwardly that's why they hate him. The real reason is he's kind, sincere, and doesn't feel the need to hide his emotions or his love. He tries very hard for their acceptance. They're bitter and hardened, they don't outwardly show their love and have to keep an edge up. Pete is soft and genuine. Probably had a good, stable home life growing up. No one did in that family. So they likely resent that as well. Pete standing up for Carmy is exactly what they hate. No one in the family cared about Carmy's incredible success and accomplishments. He won a freaking James Beard award (highest honor for American chefs outside of Michelin) and worked at a multiple Michelin starred restaurant. Richie mocks what Carmy did, Mikey shut him out, Sugar doesn't acknowledge it openly to him, and no one at the party knows or cares to know what he did. One of them called him a fucking loser despite him being an incredibly gifted chef. But that scene showed that it was Pete that followed Carmy's success. Pete admitted essentially to reading articles about Carmy's old restaurant and it was clear he was proud of him. He stood up for Carmy and Carmy isn't capable of seeing that for being a genuine act of love to take interest in his career. They just see his love as corny because they can't show it like he can. Their upbringing didn't allow it. No spoilers, but pay attention to Sugar and the family dynamic. and her marriage to Pete makes sense. Also no ketchup on hot dogs is a huge thing in Chicago and you are extremely likely to get clowned on it for it. Chicago takes their hot dogs pretty seriously. Richie was being very Chicago in that moment. I'm a Midwesterner by birth, so I of course agree. ;)

Jay Craig

I'll bet your entire net worth that you're a gigantic fucking loser Don.

Anonymous

Charlotte Drolet

@LilDon075 Why are you still crying? I told you the solution to all your problems. You don't have to worry about the police or anyone's opinion. I am all for them personal choices.

Any idea when episode 5 is coming out?
