Milena's Sergei laugh at 56:50 💀 Appreciate LM acknowledging that this violence is also the norm for Bodie and all these other teenagers, that they have also ducked and hid when shots have been fired near them and are desensitized and feel justified. It's refreshing to see first time viewers acknowledge these things while also soaking up plot lines with side characters like Joe and emotional storylines like Ziggy's. Showing people the show is sometimes a struggle I think as they've touched on the biggest differences between other countries that struggle with severe systemic racism (yeah every country does but some like France and South Korea for sure comes to mind) and the US are the superfluous amount of guns with laws protecting gun owners, as well as the prison industrial complex. I don't know much about the racial wealth disparity in other countries but I do know that the pushback for slavery/war/genocide reparations is almost universal Curious if anyone has any thoughts about other major ways in which the US differs from other countries in it's race related struggles or has knowledge of other countries that have systemic racial issues unique to them

"I hate seeing kids in this show. I don't want to see kids ever again." Oh boy. :D

@Lil Don075 If you’re referring to me I’m actually not abusing any illicit drugs atm, but I appreciate you having my back as always 🫂 have actually worked multiple contract jobs as a peer to peer support specialist (got certification from NAMI NC) working with people struggling with mental illness and previous drug abuse If you’re referring to countries that struggle with systemic racism having problems with crack cocaine I’m sure there is validity to that, especially among the wealthy elite and politicians influencing things (you ever see Succession? It’s a real hoot!)

PIG

I think Lil Don might be trolling ;)

space1999

You sure? Don seems to reply to most my comments… I think we’re buds 🤔

David

I agree with your comments about racial inequity and profiling by police in general, but I’m not sure how you relate that to the specific example in this show of police arresting the black gang members after the shooting. The police were told by the community members that it was a turf fight by rival gangs. It’s a black neighbourhood and the gangs in that neighbourhood are all black. So the police just rounded up known gang members from that neighbourhood.

David

You were wondering why the Greek gave FBI agent Koutriss such a big drug bust as a quid pro quo for him letting them know about the police - Earlier in the episode the Greeks discuss the unreliability and cheating of their Colombian business partners. The Greek tipped off koutris to give him a big bust and take out the columbians operation. I believe the Greeks had another supplier lined up.

Karabo

Hahahaha That Brother Mouzone Gus Fring comparison is apt. Brother is a problem. I love Prop Joe's "More bodies on him that a Chinese cemetery" metaphor

Karabo

@18:08 "did he have hands? Did he have a face? Then it wasn't us" hahahaha, my favorite Sergei moment

Karabo

Oh the girls are already liking Bunny Colvin? Season 3 will be fun

Karabo

I love the fact that Lola keeps coming back to the systemic racism point. Some people don't like it but it is true . You guys might have a 99.9% white population but like season 2 proves, after systematic racism, you have classism. I can bet you anything, the poor people in Serbia get prosecuted way more than the upper class, even for crimes that these groups do in similar proportions. Like Milena said, The Wire is basically a documentary. That's why it is so timeless

space1999

So true! Class war disguising itself as a culture war! David Simon described The Wire as his attempt to display a modern Greek tragedy, characters fighting their fate while the Gods are really the ones in control, constantly making victims of the humans. He says he swapped the Gods out for systemic issues with Capitalism being the equivalent of Zeus

I'm quite surprised no one has told the girls the Jay Landsman trivia yet. Guess I'll be the one to do it 💁‍♀️ At 24:35, the character standing next to Bunny Colvin is Lt. Dennis Mello, played by Jay Landsman. You might recognise that this is the same name as the character Jay Landsman in the show (the overweight fellow from homicide who we've been with since episode 1). That's because the character of Jay Landsman is directly based on the real life Jay Landsman who held the exact position as a sergeant of homicide for years in Baltimore. He was featured in David Simon's 1991 book about the Baltimore homicide unit 'Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets', and was the inspiration for the fictional character John Munch on that show based on the same book. When The Wire was being developed, the real Landsman auditioned for the part of himself, but lost out to the actor we know and love Delaney Williams. Clearly the showrunners had a far more fictionalised iteration of Jay Landsman in mind for the show, but nonetheless, the next time you feel sour after not getting a job interview, just remember that Jay Landsman was *literally* the man for the job and still lost out. An ex-cop who does end up playing themselves however is Ed Norris, seen wearing the hi-vis at 7:59. We've been seeing him since the beginning here and there, his first appearance was in season 1 episode 6, the episode where Brandon's body is discovered in the pit. Norris, 20-year veteran of the New York Police Department, served as Police Commissioner for Baltimore from 2000 to late 2002 and Superintendent of the Maryland State Police in 2003. In 2003 he was convicted of a felony and spent six months in federal prison, following illegal personal expenditures of over $20,000 from the Baltimore Police Department's supplemental account in order to pay for expensive gifts, personal expenses, and extramarital affairs with at least six women. He's been a popular Baltimore radio host ever since, and in 2017 he published the book 'Way Down In The Hole', which I intend to read. Norris and Landsman aren't the only two real-life characters to appear in the show, so when others show themselves I'll let y'all know.

The class divide truly is the biggest and most important divide. All the other ones are probably aggravated specifically to distract from the class divide.

Glad you shared this! I only read about Ed Norris and his crazy ass this past year! There are two plot lines coming up later that fans believe were written as a response to his behavior. It honestly frustrates me he published that book and made more money off of The Wire I’ve honestly had trouble picturing Jay Landsman behaving like goofy/slob tv show Jay but I can totally see why someone like that would be friendship material for David Simon and Ed Burns

Anonymous

Apparently David Simon wrote the foreword to his book, so no bad blood there.

PamRenea

1. Lola announcing she never want to see kids in this show again......😐 2. BUNNY COLVIN!!!!! 3. McNulty is a whole. 😂🤣

@Lil Don075 Would love to hear what you like about The Wire and why you’re paying to watch it alongside Lm
