David Simon has said that the opening of each season embodies the themes of that season. This one is one of my favs, the rich paying off members of the working class (Mcnulty) so they can have their big party that obstructs shipping routes Ziggy reminds me a lot of Roman from Succession, daddy problems and no impulse control. Love the contrast in the ways Frank treats Ziggy and how Valchek treats Prez for their fuck ups. A lot of fans are kind of put off by the introduction of Ziggy and the dock workers, it's a whole new story really. Even actor who played Omar (Michael K Williams RIP) was upset at the direction the show went focusing so much on white characters. He described the Wire as the first big drama show that really belonged to black Americans and showcased all sides of black America, something the show should really get credit for. Even outside of the accurate representation of economic segregation, the show having black characters who are gay and not in any way stereotypes was just not something that was common before this. He did acknowledge later that he understood and appreciated David simon's vision though

For some reason, their version seems to be faster than mine (watching on HBO Max) which makes it impossible to stay synced. Even when I line up the scenes directly, theirs eventually pulls ahead. Is anyone else having this problem? Any solution?

The version they're watching runs at 25 fps, while the US version is 23.976 fps. So, you need to either speed up your version of The Wire or slow down the full reaction to keep it synced. I use a video player (PotPlayer) to slow down the full reaction to run at 0.959x rather than 1x by changing the Speed step to 0.041 and slowing the video down by one step. You may need to slightly re-sync a couple times when watching, but it generally keeps it accurately synced.

Yeah, the story across the 5 seasons became more about Baltimore as a whole rather than any specific race, people or industry. A character who reminds me a lot of Ziggy was Olmar when I watched season 2 of Vinland. Just huge Ziggy vibes instantly from him.

I like the Olmar comparison, just 2 young men who are clueless, chaotic and stumbling over themselves and receiving preferential treatment because of who their father is I think this season in particular has some interesting parallels to Vinland Saga with the ways in which both stories examine the role fathers play in their children’s lives and the things they set their children up for (good and bad)
