Am I the only one completely blindsided by the show Heavenly Delusions? Where the fuck did that show come from? Am I the only one watching it? (already caught up to current episode)

TuiLa4

What I find fascinating is that from the very beginning, we learn from Gon himself that he wants to find his dad to understand what is so special about being a hunter. Not once has Gon shown a desire for a parental relationship with his father, (further supported by Gon calling him Ging). Gon is driven by simple curiosity, and it's overall an incredibly unique character motivation, given the circumstances.

Julius

Agreed. They care more about how Ging will treat Gon when they meet more than Gon lol. Gon has never hinted at wanting a fatherly figure in his life or caring what Ging thinks of him. Like Ging, Gon embarked on the journey to become a hunter out of curiosity.

Julius

I never really considered Ging a bad dad/person. Giving Gon to a person that is MUCH more suited to taking care of him is a good thing. Ging giving up Gon to Mito is great parenting, he realized that he didn’t have the traits to be a great guardian so he gave up his child. Is that not admirable? Gon has also never shown any anger to Ging for leaving, he doesn’t care that he left. He’s just curious as to why he left to be a Hunter. I do agree though that Ging leaving Mito at 12 to become a Hunter is selfish, just like Gon leaving Mito at 12 to become a hunter is also selfish. Gon didn’t become a Hunter to please his dad or get some validation, he did it for himself, to satisfy his curiosity.

Kizaru

I have never seen any other reactors dislike Ging this much, I personally find him very interesting, but I respect the honesty in the reactions. I actually enjoy seeing different perspectives from different people.

Jed U

To answer your question, Mito filed a case against Ging and took complete custody of Gon shortly after he left him on the island. Ging just continued his journey as a Hunter. People usually refer to custody cases as "custody battles", but it is never implied that Ging fought the process or even showed up to court lol

Shivering King Banana

The Custody battle was mostly explored in the Ace Attorney spin-off game AttorneyXAttorney. Definitely worth a play, adds a lot of characterization to Mito.

Sonder

This reminds me of how you guys felt about Zuko and Ozai like Gon and Ging.

Lola's Japanese was still alive and well.

Rare

Ging and Gon are.. very interesting people. It’s hard to describe them without spoiling. I look forward to you hopefully picking up what I mean. It’s important to keep things in retrospect.

Isaac

The only person who called it a battle was just spouting memes.

Isaac

You should lay off the memes. They have no way of knowing what's serious

space1999

Gon is a child first of all, him not showing anger doesn’t mean anything. He literally left Gon with no means of contacting him unless he became a hunter. Literally said “I don’t wanna see you” I swear it’s just like the people saying Hisoka being attracted to children isn’t that bad And second *spoilers* Ging admits he’s not good dad and is clowned on in universe by multiple characters for being a shitty father.

space1999

Gon is a child, he doesn’t know any better. He says in the first episode he wants to know what was so important for his dad to become a hunter and leave him Ging leaves Gon with no way to contact him and says he doesn’t wanna see him He’s a great character (one of my absolute favs for the story) and the dynamic is one of my fav wrinkles about the story writing wise, but he’s not a good dad

Jay Craig

I think a lot of the awful takes I see from the fandom around Hisoka and Ging stem particularly from a lack of any real media literacy, it's worth remembering when you get frustrated by how dumb people can be talking about this show sometimes that they don't really think about it very hard, not worth getting worked up over. The two specific things you've brought up are things that have always irritated me to read too.

space1999

Appreciate you 🙏 Edited my comment to not come across as rude or confrontational You’re totally right, people (especially fandoms) have these kinds of opinions

Vivasvan Gautam

Animes can have terrible fathers. And i do agree with girls that Ging is one terrible dad. In fact this stereotype is even prevalent in modern society, even in 21st century. I saw a news article in which a person was representing his country in sports tournament. (i recall it being Australia, but it could be wrong) While he was playing match for his country, his wife was going under labour in hospital and giving birth to his daughter. It is expected and often cast a burden upon men to seek higher purpose, achieve greatness, build a legacy, follow passion etc, but at what cost? Why do we allow it? Why don't we question it? In fact why don't we condemn this line of thinking? Maybe it won't change people like Ging, who don't want to be father, but at least men who wish and desire to be one wont be driven by patriarchal stereotypes.

HenryM

Seeing your reaction to Gon stopping the tape was so sweet. It's like you said multiple times, the people who raised you, loved you and were there for you are the ones that matter, Mito is his mom and he wouldn't have it any other way

space1999

Really appreciate these questions and thoughts. It is like an ingrained patriarchal thing, like duty and achievement before family for men

space1999

For real, between last episode and this one the amount of wholesomeness and honest warmth between Gon and Mito is like a gift. Lots of specific heartwarming scenes I’m excited for them to see

HeavenlyR

*SPOILERS* Question for you, do you think they'll like Ging by the end of the series I think after the thing you mentioned in the spoiler I don't believe he ever "redeems" himself as a father but he kinda becomes lovable in how much he's a bit of an asshole and gets called out by everyone and he has a great final scene.

space1999

SPOILERS Oh yeah I agree very strongly, I love him as a character and even think he has some great heart-warming moments. The final scene with him and Gon is one of my favorites ever and is so warm and emotional and genuine. I think LM might have trouble seeing past his behavior (they’re gonna cheer when leerio punches him lol) but I think they’ll appreciate his very distinct behavior/motivations and the ways in which he parallels Gon. How do you think they’ll feel about Netero and his behavior towards Meruem? I think like Ging he’s a character who has very distinct wants and morals

Samsara

A kind of sad detail is that Gon calls his dad Ging cause he never raised him but also doesn't call Mito his mom but also by her name which means that he kind of doesn't see anyone really as a mom or a dad.

This is not a spoiler, because show doesn`t explain it till the very end and people who watch it are supposed to figure it out by themselves, but its hard to figure out so I would write it there. Ging left Gon with Mito because of 2 reasons. 1. In Gings eyes, Mito is better parent for Gon than Ging(he knew that Mito would raise Gon better). 2. Ging couldn`t keep Gon and continue on being Hunter, because Hunters job is very dangerous, so he would`ve put Gons life at risk(Gon couldn`t protect himself because wasn`t grown enough, and Ging is constantly risking his life in different Hunter missions). So he had to choose, abandon being a hunter and raise Gon, or be a hunter and leave Gon with Mito. So Ging choose the selfish option, of leaving Gon with Mito and continue being a Hunter. Gon doesn`t want to find Ging to find his father, he wants to find Ging because he is genuinely curious why Ging chose being hunter over raising him, so he is trying to become a hunter and find Ging and ask it to him(you can see that Gon calls Ging "Ging" rather than "Father"). Of-course that is on the surface, it is possible(and probably that`s the case) that there are layers to it, and Gon wants to actually find his father and uses "curiosity of why Ging chose to be a hunter instead of raising him" as a cope(to give himself a valid reason, and to not get his ego hurt/not look desperate/still look cool in his own eyes), but it is also possible that Gon doesn`t care much about Ging and "is just curious"(or probably it`s a mix of both). PS. Ging have to erase information about him, because of nature of his job, if anyone finds out much information about him, they can threaten him by using his relatives(this is partially speculation, but in this 2 episodes, in one of which Mito said that her parents got into "car accident" and later Killua told Gon to "not use hunter license on home computer" are supposed to give clues on that).

"My mum is Mito-san!" <3 so cute

Antonio

>This is not a spoiler >Proceeds to post a character summary that requires the entire show to understand My brother what exactly do you think a spoiler is.

Camzeee

Calling Ging a sociopath is a bit excessive imo. He is not a good person for ignoring his parental duty, but he at least left his son in good hands and was honest about his own failings and desires. There are worse fathers out there like abusive ones or manipulative ones. Absent ones who run off to change the world is a bit better than the first two.

Anonymous

I also think Gon is not looking for validation, he’s just that curious like he’s for everything since he grew up in an island without friends and few people passing by, just like Ging.

Anonymous

And now its time for dark shit…

Kya Colosseum

For the life of me I can't understand why people post spoilers like this on HxH episodes with such regularity.

HeavenlyR

Yeah the last info we got on him was that he discovers ruins, spends his own money to restore them and preserve them for future generations and makes sure ordinary people are able to experience them as well. Yeah he's been a bad dad but he's not a cruel sociopath lol

[POSSIBLE SPOILER] 24:44 wake me up WAKE ME UP INSIDE [POSSIBLE SPOILER] [POSSIBLE SPOILER] edit : 29:22 CAN'T WAKE UP SAVE MEE [POSSIBLE SPOILER]

Cinya

I feel sorry for Mito. She's a 23 year old surrogate mother to a 11/12 year old. She'll barely be 30 by the time Gon is 18.

Edgar

God damn, the pure hatred towards Ging is funny as hell

David Brown

Ging es lo unico que no me ha gustado de esta serie, por lo demas es excelente!

JT

@Cinya You must be 18 and over to have a patreon account, they can't be that young

Edgar

Eh, depends. What's worse dead beat dad or pedophile clown? Even our boy killua has taken lives of dozens of people.

JATLA

Milena’s idea of doing a whole day of 1 show on different days is a good idea, you’re not going to be able to keep watching 1 or 2 episodes of Hunter😂

JATLA

Gon not listening to the tape about his mother is one of my favorite Gon moments in this show, what a character.
