Canute: I'm going to save the vikings because they suffered so much for having to live in a world ruled by vikings! Einar: [visible confusion]

sand_fl

okay, since you always forget to check the lyrics let me copy paste the lyrics from the intro because they're perfect for this show 'Defining lines between the victims And what will soon become the prey I've giving up on counting blessings The Gods can judge me when I'm dead 'Cause I can not take this anymore I'm done with the feelings that I've known in paradox Lost in paradox The feeling of hatred burns my soul I'm done with the feelings that I've known in paradox Lost in paradox I'm maybe crazy enough to break myself inside my head 'Cause lately I couldn't find these answers to live by instead Some will call it giving up I just call it getting lost in my own revenge' anyway, i love all intros but i think this one if my favourite of the 4 and also fron the endings.

space1999

Askellad, a self-serving man who only wanted the best for HIS country, killed both Thorfinn and Canute's fathers (as well as Ragnar) and his death turned them into the men they are. Now they stand before each other as two men who want more for the people of the world Askellad hated the side of himself that was a Viking, he hated the ways in which he resembled his father. Thorfinn adores his father and Canute reluctantly acknowledges his father's strengths while hating him Canute resembles his father in the way he insists that Thorfinn acknowledge his utilitarian worldview and submit to his will. Thorfinn obviously resembles Thors in his willingness to stand up for life and the well-being of other before all else If Askellad hadn't entered either of their lives and put this spark and desire into them they would have never become people who wanted to enact their will on the world Agree with L and M that someone who hadn't gone through what Thorfinn and Thors had been through couldn't have this change and continue to challenge themselves to take the path of non-violence. Appreciate how understanding of Canute they are Totally get what Lola means comparing the emotional impact with Bojack, the complete vulnerability of the characters in both stories and the ways they challenge themselves to change totally kills me lol. We really just need Thorfinn and Cuddley Whiskers from Bojack and Mob from Mob Psycho to save us all

HenryM

"Some will call it giving up, I just call it getting lost in my own revenge" that's my favorite part

next anime, Monster, in my opinion a must watch anime, it's one of the few anime I recommended to my parents, they loved it, of course...

space1999

I love that it applies to BOTH Thorfinn and Canute (and really every character in the story to some degree but especially those two)

Vivasvan Gautam

Canute commanding to stop the waves has actually happened in history. The scene is based on a famous Story of King Canute of England Commanding the waves - [W]hen at the summit of his power, he ordered a seat to be placed for him on the sea-shore when the tide was coming in. Then, before a large group of his flattering courtiers, he spoke to the rising sea, saying, "Thou, too, art subject to my command, for the land on which I am seated is mine, and no one has ever resisted my commands with impunity. I command you, then, o waters, not to flow over my land, nor presume to wet the feet and the robe of your lord." The tide, however, continued to rise as usual, dashing over his feet and legs without respect to his royal person. Then Canute leaped backwards, saying: "Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws." However Yukimura switches it here. It amazes me how much thought he has given on the subject while writing this story. In reality canute meant to demonstrate it to his subject that his power is no match for the power of God. Over here Canute knows very well that he is powerless, yet he is uniting strength of vikings to rebel against God.

space1999

Amazing, I love that this could be adapted into the story by Yukimura and slightly altered to fit a different character and scene Does Canute in Vinland Saga mirror the real life “Mad King” in other ways or are they totally different?

Danny

Thorfinn chasing ideals with an idealistic approach. Canute chasing ideals with a realistic approach. Jokes on them, ideals are ideals because they are unattainable.

Vivasvan Gautam

Also girls, be prepared for Kobayashi cinema in next week. He has worked on 4 episodes in this season, including the next one. EP 4- awakening , 9-oath, 17- road to home and next episode. He also worked in 4 episodes of season 1. EP 6- the one in which grandma helps thorfinn EP-14 Light of the day(the one in which askeladd murders the whole village) EP 18- out of the cradle (Canute's epiphany episode) EP 22- askeladd's backstory. Needless to say that next ep is also going to be a visual masterpiece. These animators are unsung heroes that are subsumed within name of "mappa". Without efforts, dedication, vision and love of these people we would not have been able to witness such marvellous adaptation.

Vivasvan Gautam

But do vikings exist today? One can also argue that thorfinns of the world have made difference in past 1400 years. Slowly, steadily across generation and span of centuries. An ideal was achieved.

space1999

I saw the list of animators for the season and salivated omfg

visually i think this is the most cinematic vinland has looked. the sunset’s colors reflecting off the characters and serving as a striking backdrop, and that shot of spears pointed at the sun to represent canute’s “rebellion against god”. stunning direction and atmosphere fitting for the climax of this arc

Robert H.

This episode was great, but was also just one step in a long journey. Thorfinn tries to resolve conflicts in a brutal and cold-blooded world without violence. Getting involved in a bet worked this time, but does he want to go for such a game every time now? How will he react when he encounters a person who simply wants to kill him? How does he react when a person attacks his friends or family? Vinland Saga takes a different path than many other stories that revolve around violence and fighting, but even here we see our character struggle with obstacles that he must overcome and he must grow to deal with.

Danny

Im more of a pessimist so cant say that humanity will ever achieve peace without strength. Lets not forget how the 2nd world war ended. We had to drop a nuke that wiped out whole cities and killed thousands in order to put an end to "more casualties". But as much as I admire the "I have no enemies" speech. The fact remains is that we only live once in this world and nothing will make me risk putting my life or the lives of my loved ones on the line because I want to live like a saint. I disagree with Thorfinn's speech about how Ketil's ppl couldve spoke with Canute first. Canute's whole idea was to take Ketil's farm by force and plot. There was literally no reasoning. Even Thorfinn, who was close to Canute wasn't able to sway him. What Thorfinn wishes for is peace not victory. And that is a double edged sword. He is similar to Emiya Shiro from Fate Stay Night who embodies this hero of justice that wishes to save everyone, or as many as he can. But the inevitable result is that his goals are simply ideals that can only be pursued forever and never truly attained. The only way is to live alone in the fucking mountains and hope nobody bothers you.

Danny

yeah i need to see more of Thorfinn's resolve/path before calling him "the best mc of all time" like others already are. personally I dont agree with his stance as its not the most efficient way of living. Better than Vikings but definitely has drawbacks. Also, it doesnt help that he is also ridiculously OP which makes him feel like a Gary Stu because lets be honest, if Omar tried what he did with those Vikings, he was dead in that first punch. So his "I got no enemies" speech really only works out if you're OP af and the plot drives you to those right circumstances. Dont get me wrong, I love his story and character development from a literature/story standpoint. I just meant if you take away the plot armor, his ideals don't work. But as you said, I want to see more from him. I want to see how he will choose his actions under those conditions you listed out above. And then we shall see where he goes.

Next Anime need to be Ranking of Kings, the story is beautiful and heartwarming

Vivasvan Gautam

@ danny I am not sure what you mean by "not an efficient way of living", efficient to me looks like viewing people like some kind of goods. If you could elaborate on it, I would be better able to grasp. The point imo is not olmar would get punched into oblivion. Show is also simultaneously exploring many other themes that are connected with idea of violence. It also does a deep dive into a lot of concepts I’m really passionate about: what accountability is. Just because you can find target in other person and make their lives hell, should you do it? what it means to be a good person? how things are always more complicated than they seem on the surface, what it is to live in a society where you might not always "succeed" in living up to your own ideals, how relationships can take many forms for better or worse, why it’s important to have lovers/friends/people who accept you for who you are (and what that looks like). It's the culmination of all these ideas that makes vinland and thorfinn so special. And i am assuming you are an anime only, so a lot is still there for you to see. Let's hope we get third season by end of 2025 at the earliest.

HeavenlyR

The last few episodes tainted it for me tbh, 13 episodes in I was almost ready to say it was a top 10 anime ever

Edgar

I dont see anything wrong people calling Thorfin best MC is they think that way.

maurizio piras

haikyuu or 86 for the next anime PLEASE

Sergeant Jay

If your looking for short anime shows watch 1. Your lie in April 2. Cyberpunk edgerunners 3. Steins gate or 4. Ranking of kings If your looking for a longer anime show watch 1. Monster.

Nemo

Kaguya Sama is my recommendation for the future. :)

Vivasvan Gautam

Man you just "gish galloped" in your comment. You've talked about ten different things at once to counter me. And now to address them I'll have to answer each them one by one which obviously no reasonable person can do. Let's agree to disagree.

Baekun

I love the difference between Snake coming to the crowd now and back when Thorfinn was going to be cut by Fox. Snake saved Thorfinn back then but now Thorfinn is doing the saving. Thorfinn went from not having a purpose in life to repaying his gratitude for the people of the farm by putting his life on the line. An absolutely beautiful moment in this episode and I'm so proud of Thorfinn :)

MaxVSTheGames

@Vivasan Gautam Yeah, but even Vinland's ideal didn't turn out to work in the end. The whole point of Vinland is that it's a land of prosperity and peace where war and slavery have no place. But in truth, Vinland is Newfound Land in Canada, and although, comparatively to Europe and Scandianvia it didn't know a LOT of wars, it still did. And they had some slavery there as well for a while.

Jorginho

Monster next please with the best Antagonist and one of the best and underrated protagonist

Danny

@Vivasvan yeah I am anime only so I am looking forward to the future conflicts to come. I got no problem with ppl calling Thorfinn best MC. I'm just saying personally I need a lil bit more from him to see where his ideals lead him and how he will approach future conflicts. Will he continue to remain steadfast in his beliefs or will they bend from time to time? I think Thorfinn is one of the better MC's I've seen in a decade. A good top 10

I love this

James Jaya

I think absurdity is the point of the show. According to camus, Human is thrown into an absurd situation called life. Against the absurdity of life, instead of suicide, he believe we should embrace but then rebel against the absurd. In episode 1, Einar lost his family, become a slave with no freedom. Living seems absurd, yet he still choose to live. The best revenge against a hopeless life is to live with hope. When arnheid dies, she didn’t only ask to thorfin but to us in the future. Can we promise a land where people don’t fight among themselves. The dream of vinland and Thorfinn ideal seems absurd, yet the author is telling us to seek it.

James Jaya

I do agree that Thorfinn’s approach seems unrealistic and perhaps we do need strength for peace. Part of the peace we have today is based on strength, and we fall into the control of Moloch, god of unhealthy competition.. Every country spent a lot of money for military. Money that can be used into other thing like healthcare to save people. Because other country spent a lot of money, now we too have to increase our military spending, since we cannot trust each other. This become a race. Eventually we create nuclear weapon that is enough to destroy not only the “enemy”, but ourselves as well. There is no one winning in this game. Peace happen through Mutually assured destruction. Peace that is based on mistrust where everyone is a potential enemy. So yeah, peace is a really hard problem. I don’t claim that I know the solution neither do I think that my country should just drop all its military. And I can still watch youtube video with relative peace today, so maybe I don’t have any right to criticize it. But this is the reality of peace built on the foundation of strength accumulation we have today.

Bojack horseman is an amazing show
