Yeeeahhhhhhh. Living for these Wire reactions 👊

Orr Malus

Right on schedule. Is everything all right?

HenryM

That Narcotics Anonymous scene and your discussion about it hit hard. I knew a guy back in high school who was going down that path, I didn't know the right words or what to do at the time to help him, we were just teenagers. I eventually lost contact with him, but now I wonder if he ever got the help he needed. Great discussion as always, I assure you this show just keeps getting better with all of the potential storylines

Despite how flawed our current justice system is this show shows that it has improved a lot in a short amount of time. Back during the time of this show police brutality and injustice would have happened so much more often that it was just the normal, but now when stuff like that happens you see pushback and those responsible held accountable. Obviously not all the time and there’s still many issues but in most places if any cop behaved to the degree of those in this show they would get checked very fast. I think it’s mainly due to the fact they are being recorded and shown to the world through social media and other places but despite why those who behave like this are being help far more responsible than they were during the show so that’s a huge reason in my opinion it has changed since than. Maybe not as much as it should’ve but I think it has gotten a lot better than in this show and hopefully continues. Obviously it’s still a very flawed system that needs reworking I’m just pointing out that I don’t believe it’s the same today as it was in this show, still bad just not to this degree.

It is. at best .5% better. As long as there is Qualified Immunity for police officers, continued militarization (that views and frames crime as war) and the wall of blue code exists, police are going to use excessive force. Google LASD Gangs.

I completely agree however today those police using excessive force are getting held accountable. Not all and definitely not enough but a lot more than back then. The actual police itself though haven’t much due to what you mentioned and other stuff. I think the way it got better is those police who use excessive force are now being held responsible for it more than ever which is an improvement. And in big cities like la, Chicago, New York it probably hasn’t changed much even the way I’m talking about due to corruption. I was more referring to the way police patrol as a whole have gotten less abusive due to them being held more accountable than ever before, and obviously their are still many who are corrupt and fail to serve the people but I think in general the way police act has gotten better. However the institution and way of policing hasn’t. They still focus on punishing more than helping and give a crazy amount of power to individuals who have done nothing to prove they deserve it. So in that way it hasn’t I was mainly talking about the average police officer and the amount of excessive force they use day to day has gotten better imo. Which isn’t that much of a progression if we only stopped some police from beating on people but at least it’s something which is all I was pointing out.

The wall of blue code will also hopefully become non existent as more corrupt police officers are getting filtered out and good ones hopefully in. Recently police have broken it in big cases and more and more you hear about corrupt police losing their job or at least about their actions which never would have happened before, and as it continues to happen I believe that code will go away.

I also could just be completely wrong as well I don’t even live in the states and was just observing what I see in the media which is a lot of police getting held accountable which is why I made the claim it’s getting better because I don’t believe any were held accountable before.

space1999

I hope you don’t blame your teenage self! Even if you theoretically knew what to say it would still be too much responsibility for a teenager to have that pressure to help someone right?

space1999

Some of the bigger cases that have gained a lot of media attention have gone to court and led to arrests and charges. But sadly a large number of police who commit crimes, even ones who are charged, are just moved to other departments in different states. One thing that is really encouraging though is the number of counties that are trying to create legislation that will require police officers on the job to travel with health care workers when responding to emergency calls. A program like this was implemented in Denver for several months and lead to a HUGE reduction in the rate of crimes reported by police (crimes related to mental health, poverty and substance abuse) THESE RATES OF REPORTED CRIMES WERE DOWN BY 34%!!!! If the police were called on Bubs and his friend (illegal substance abuse) and they arrived with a health care worker and social worker, the two of them would be much less likely to receive criminal charges. They might even receive legitimate support or resources https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abm2106g

I had no idea they just got relocated most of the time and in that case probably not much progress has been made if those held accountable aren’t ever punished. I do feel the pressure is on these institutions to change and that program where a health care worker must be with them shows that and then them actually having them implementing it is a good sign for future progress as you said.

It will never go away as long as the police unions exists. The unions protect most of these officers and the few that are punished are just to appease the masses. A lot of the police that overextend their authority do so because they know their union will protect them. Dissolve the police unions and you’ll have better behaved police.

HenryM

Sure, but still for a time I thought if I could have done something differently, it ultimately depends if the person wants to be helped and wants to make a change, but at that age maybe a little more persistence could have helped

It’s surprising how bad the English subtitles are for this given the popularity of the show and its reputation for even native speakers having difficulty with the accents and slang. One example in this that stood out was when they had Bunk say “I was all metro attack.” What does that even mean! Haha. The line was “I was all metro as heck”. At the time this came out the term “metrosexual” was popularised because of male celebrities like David Beckham taking more care in their appearance and shows like “Queer eye for the straight guy” being on tv. It was a fad word that came and went and nowadays is best remembered for a South Park episode that parodied the phenomenon. It happens all the time in this show, you’d think they’d give it another pass!

this is so true. i'm a high school debate coach and we had a topic about police unions. it is crazy what they are allowed to negotiate into contracts - like NO CITIZEN OVERSIGHT BOARDS, ALLOWING POLICE TO SEE THE EVIDENCE AGAINST THEM PRIOR TO HAVING TO MAKE STATEMENTS (which allows police to change their stories to fit what the evidence is), and so on, and so on. Allowing the union to dictate how police officers can and more importantly cannot be investigated has truly put them above the law.

Jay Craig

This is just straight wrong. He's saying he's All-Metro Attack, i.e., in Lacrosse (which he was talking about half a second earlier) he played Attack and was 'All-Metro' akin to someone being 'All-State' - he was the best in his area (the metropolitan high school area, hence Metro.) It is actually comical how wrong you are with your whole chest lmao.

Ha, TIL. Sorry, I’ve had an eye out for it this rewatch and it’s basically constant. Guess I picked a comically bad example.

Dante

I mean I’ve been watching with subtitles on HBO Max and they’ve been correct 100% of the time so not really sure what you’re talking about

Jay Craig

No diss, they have gotten a ton of stuff wrong in the subs, it was just hilarious that the one thing you chose as an example was something that would've implied that Bunk Moreland was written to be a metrosexual in highschool

Anonymous

Ha, I didn’t think he was suggesting that was the case. Watching it at the time I thought he was being self deprecating with a broad use of a fashionable word because Omar probably wasn’t the only person who’d made that point to him.

Josip

yall need to watch gomorrah

TeaDrinker3000

This comment is hilarious given that in the very next episode, Jimmy gives Bunk shit for wearing pink 😅 Maybe makkwata is picking up on a deeper puzzle that no one has cracked yet? 😉😂
