Hisoka sort of did see something in Leorio. At least, he didn't kill him during the same fight he didn't kill Gon. He even decided to carry Leorio to the next exam so he could continue since he was knocked out.

I would go as far as to say that he's my favorite in all of fiction. Doesn't matter how boring and dull a story is, you throw in Hisoka and it's suddenly interesting. A plot device in character form, that's what makes him great. Grass growing: 😴 Grass growing but Hisoka's there too: 😱
