I'm surprised you took from that call that Kim wasn't at the place of work anymore. I mean, you're not alone in thinking that, but it seemed clear to me he spoke to her and it didn't go well and that's why he regressed back into self-destruction.

The purpose of the scams wasn't to earn money. He regressed to doing scams to cope with the pain of that phone call just as an alcoholic might take a drink after months of being sober.

I think it could be both. Maybe he's making *enough* at Cinnabon to maintain his life as Gene, but the conversation with Francesca notes that he's run out of the money he took with him when he lammed it. I think part of his motivation is to recapture some Saul living standards.

Saul has access to a fair amount of funds, at least several hundred thousand dollars, though he did lose a lot of money to the feds. After his original interaction with Jeff and the mall, "Gene" readily agreed to pay Ed the disappearer $250,000 before changing his mind and deciding to fix it himself. Yes, this was before he found out that the feds found all his hidden away money, but presumably he has to have quick, liquid access to at least that much to pay Ed. I don't think he was going to be trying to tap shell corporations while trying to lay low so soon after Walt's death.
