HenryM

Ahhhhhh! I meant to do my write up for this episode last night and then stuff came up, so my comments will be coming later than usual!

"i cant even talk about it" 40 MINUTES OF POST-DISCUSSION SAYS OTHERWISE :D

My Toasty Toast

(This is long so summarized at end) To your question at the beginning, “Maroon” can mean “left behind” or “stranded.” When we had the flashbacks with Thomas Hamilton, they mentioned a few times how England and Spain were at war with each other. In history, I can’t remember if it was an English, Spanish, Dutch, or French colony (some European empire) - during the war they lost some territories so the people just evacuated the colonies but left behind the slaves. Hence the slaves were “marooned” on the islands and colonies. When the other Empire that won those territories tried to take those colonies, they couldn’t because the slaves had managed to take over the forts and housing left behind. That was the beginning of the Maroon revolutions, which we see as a fascinating storyline in this show. To summarize: they’re called Maroons because they were left behind stranded.

I love how this show deals with ambiguity. Take the conversation between Max and Eleanor. In s2, we didn’t see whether either of them betrayed each other, and that’s maintained here. Both Max and Eleanor say “no” when asked if the other did so. And we aren’t given direct evidence of whether they are telling the truth. Like when Flint did or didn’t push Billy. We don’t know, and have to decide based on what we know of the characters. For my part, I believe them. Despite everything there’s a lot of respect and care left between Max and Eleanor, even if it’s also twisted up with anger and resentment.

cosmotron

Also, “I am Nassau” is one of the best Max lines. What a queen.

HenryM

Toby Stephens delivery on that speech was incredible, full body chills during that whole scene. I'd follow him anywhere 🏴‍☠️ The scene with Vane and the Spanish man was also a highlight for me, that talk really made a point to show us how even their enemies are subjected to higher powers and it isn't all black and white. It was very honorable of Vane to grant him his last request. Also I really appreciate the actor actually having an authentic Spanish accent

cosmotron

So many great conversations in this one. More in depth comments on them all will be coming tomorrow. But I’ve gotta shout out that hilarious moment between Featherstone and Idelle: “I hope this doesn’t diminish your attraction to me.” 😂

cosmotron

“How the money makes sheep of us all” is one of the lines from this show that has stuck with me.

"Now we go find Charles Vane". Remember back in season 1 when Flint couldn't even be in the same room as Vane without throwing insults and threats (that Vane deserved most of the time), and now we are here!!!!! Even back in season 1, I always felt that Vane and Flint had more in common with each other than they realized and if they just sat and talked it out, they could reach an understanding, them sacking Charlestown together and reaching that understanding was one of the best moments in Black Sails and now we are here, where one of the first names Flint thinks of for an ally is Vane, beautiful writing and development. And you can just see Vane hasn't given up on Nassau, even though Teach desperately wants him too. It's funny because Teach believes it's because it was instilled in him by Eleanor to care about Nassau, but I believe it's not just Eleanor, Vane truly enjoyed trying to rebuild Nassau with Jack and Flint and Max. Setting aside the disagreement he had with Jack about the slaves, I believe he truly loved being apart of a partnership and he can't easily give it up. He's also just a fighter in his bones, his instinct is to fight for what's his, not run on to the next. John being the one to open the door for Flint and allow him to see another way out was just beautiful, and Miranda saying "You can't see yet can you? You are not alone." Everything was just perfect.

Scott

It's crazy to think that these amazing reactions only exist because Milena stopped watching the show a few years back. It might have been divine intervention.

Gustavo

Firstly, loved the thumbnail :D "I sincerely hope this doesn't diminish your attraction to me." haahaha, I'm sure it didn't, Mr. Featherstone. All the characters stay pretty much the same throughout the show, with the exception of John and Max, their growth is exponential.

Gustavo

Great scene, the comedy was on point. Great delivery by Craig and Lise.

Amber

I'm so glad you guys are the reason I started this show bc going through the journey with you and being just as obsessed is such a fun experience! I loved this episode so much, just filled me with so much adrenaline lol

cosmotron

I’m so happy that them watching the show has gotten several others around here to check it out as well. I love the show so much and it flew under the radar for most people, so anytime new people watch it feels like a victory.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Also imagine being Woodes Rogers and a boatload of Spanish gold falls into your hands, money mind you, that can solve ALL of your problems and you give this whole speech about Luck might be turning in your favor just for literally not TWO seconds later your slapped in the face with the information that Spain knows exactly how much gold was conversed (if that's the word, lol) and they are expecting the full amount back, even the money that was traded, or they are coming and annihilating everything. Like that's truly horrible and I couldn't help but feel bad about his predicament. Then I'm slapped with the anxiety that Jack is now walking right up to Nassau, where they are looking for him knowing he has a part of the money. The twist and turns of this show is incredible.

cosmotron

For me it makes me sad for Max. She had a truly brilliant plan that’s now impossible.

Leah B

Great reaction and post discussion. I was so engulfed in Flint’s speech when I first saw this. I was also excited about growth of John’s friendship with Flint. Max, that woman is a fighter and she is smart. Max and John are favorites of mine. Madi, every time she talks I zero in on whatever she has to say and I love her dialogue. I noticed those looks with John and Madi too that y’all mentioned.

Amber

I already bought it on dvd just to own it & lent it to a friend to watch😂 even tho im still finishing season 4 haha

Hey guys, here's my reaction to 3x05 😊 https://youtu.be/nk0SqBvAKs0?si=f4aG8fIo9N4X7bOn

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

I’m more so talking about the fact that he was JUST giving a speech about luck and two seconds later was slapped in the face, it’s just so hilariously unfortunate that I couldn’t help but feel bad a little bit, but at the same time laughing at the craziness of it all.

cosmotron

I love how Flint doesn't say "when they realize I'm alive" when talking about getting the Nassau pirates to follow him when he returns. No, he says "when I come back from the dead". Because which is the more frightening story? That Flint managed to survive a storm, or that even death itself cannot stop Flint?

Anonymous

I'd certainly be okay and ready to watch it again lol

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

I mean we can infer from Maxs reaction to finding out about Eleanor being arrested that she didn’t tell Hornigold where she was, but I’m still on the fence about Max not being on that list. We know Eleanor is very willing to let her previous lovers die to get what she wants, as we saw when she took Abigail from Vane. I don’t know how she would have thought that just killing Jack and not Max would solve anything when she knows that Max and Jack are both the brains of the trio, and Max would likely find a way of getting the gold despite Jack and his crew being killed. Especially with Anne on a murder rampage if Jack had died. I think Eleanor would have put them all on the list. Just to be safe.

Sweet Owl

As first thing, I'd like to address how amazing was the handwriting back then, everytime I see a character writing something my eyes are like *-* And the use of quill and ink makes it even more elegant. Now, Flint... heh, one of the best monologues of his, that whole speech was so captivating, you can't help but hang on his lips... and the lightning on his face, damn! Also, the expression of love and admiration on Milena's face was such a treat ^.^ The relation between him and Silver just gets better and better... I didn't comment on that episode because I didn't have time, but 3x03 was one of my favourites of the entire show, maybe my favourite of the season. Not because of Flint/Silver dynamic only , but probably for the most part. I loved Eleonor entrance, followed by the red coats: in Nassau they cheered of her demise, mocked her... and she comes back in such a way. Satisfying. Almost as satisfying as the fact that she put Max in her place: she came to Eleonor all high and mighty "Are you offering me a sit on the council?" "No." :D "I am Nassau" no you are not, Nassau was fine before you and would be fine without. Sorry I just can't help myself, for the most part I simply can't stand Max. That's not wanting peace and a safe place, all what she did and said in this episode is lust for power and enjoying the feelings that come from it. I believe she actually did want just that at the beginning, but now it's not the case anymore and, even if I have nothing against a good power hungry character, I can't stand her arrogance, smug and the fact that this lust is being hidden behind a mask. Even though, I can't deny sometimes her actions are indeed altruistic and not always selfish. The dialogue between Vane and the spanish sailor always gets to me, it feels so real and heartbreaking :( One of my favourite part of this season are also Flint "hallucinations" (I don't think those are literally hallucinations but right now I can't find a better word for it), the dialogues in those, especially in the previous episode, are nothing less than writing at its higher level.

I mean, like I said it’s meant to be ambiguous. So Eleanor doing that is just as likely as her not doing it. Your view on it is valid. But we have just as much textual evidence that she didn’t. For one, Max’s name was the one she was most reluctant to mention at all, let alone put on a kill list. For another, we don’t actually see any of the assassins go after Max. We see them kill other people and then go for Jack and Featherstone, but not Max. It’s possible of course that the assassins would have gone after her when they finished with Jack and Featherstone, but we don’t know. And not knowing is part of what makes this interesting. I think it’s just as likely that Eleanor had been planning to leave Max alive but with her partners dead as a clear warning. And much like the situation with Billy and Flint, while Flint was absolutely capable of killing Billy and had done things like that before/would again, that doesn’t mean he did it with Billy. We’ll never know. And for me, it’s far more interesting to think that he didn’t. Just as I think the idea that Eleanor and Max didn’t betray each other here to be more interesting as well.

cosmotron

If you guys have any historical questions be sure to ask I’ll gladly answer if I know the answer. History is my major topic I know a lot about and study. Also it’s kinda tricky now with the Spanish problem if Woods Rogers doesn’t give it back. Do you defeat him and save the gold which the pirates need to finance things if they wanna be self sufficient and face a very big Spanish invasion probably gonna be many times more threatening than the English or give in? It’s kinda a lose lose perspective for the pirates from my perspective.

I thought the British had already defeated the Spanish by 1604 and Black Sails is happening much later.

Melkor

Oh the Spanish empire is in not even at its height yet. The 16 and 17 hundreds is when it’s at its peak. By the time of the French Revolution it’s a dying empire with not any real power left.
