Perhaps he accidentally killed a number of them when he blew up the ship? We've only seen that some of them were injured but it is possible. Or perhaps after getting nearly blown up by their boss some of them quit.

It honestly seems like that might happen given Rook "fell off the wagon" once already, though it would probably be more accurate to say Mayapple is bringing them together again.

...Just realizing we haven’t seen Owl fight yet. And judging best I can by the overall family hierarchy thing, either he or emperor Penguin was the second to last boss besides Buzzard himself back in the day. Though Owl is massively out of practice, he’s got to be at least worth another Crow, speaking in terms of the visual aids.
