The Anatomy of an Edgling:

Edglings, like Inklings cannot by their nature feel 'want'. To achieve that, they must bond with a sentient being already capable of want. Also like Inklings, they are drawn to those beings that can feel 'want'. Once bonded to a sentient creature capable of want, an Edgling will begin to grow into its new existence.

One such path of growth is through 'the collaring'. Edglings are particularly fascinating creatures in that they adapt to the new sensation of 'want' in curious and interesting ways. For instance; An Edgling that is fitted with a band of any kind around their neck (typically known as 'the collaring' in traditional terms) will grow to want the power a collar brings. A collar brings dominance, a collar brings control, a collar brings ownership. Thus it is with all Edglings that have bands circling their neck, that the Edgling grows to depend on the feeling of control the collar grants. 

Eventually, given enough time the sentient person beneath the Edgling, their 'bones' as they are referred to, becomes subdued and put to slumber. It is at this time that the Edgling manifests a charm on their neck band, usually one reflecting some key aspect of the person or thing, the 'bones' that are slumbering inside. The bones of an Edgling that wear collars are treated, at best like pets, and at worst like nuisances to keep fed and taken to the bathroom for servicing. They sleep and dream and are under the total mind and bodily control of the Edgling.
