Yeah the Gun Devil attacked multiple countries, anime left that part out for some reason. The gun devil attack shown with Aki was in japan

Also the current timeline for Chainsaw Man takes place in 1997, so the Gun Devil first appeard in 1984

i think the gun devil killed millions of people across several countries and all at once in a very public manner, from the US to Japan, I believe India and China too? The point being that due to the international and very public and instant nature of the attack the UN probably got involved for the gun ban.

also chainsaw man i believe takes place in the late 90's to early 2000's? So that terrorit attack was basically this world's 9/11 but in the 80's, but instead of planes they used guns, so basically 9/11, and some time after that the Gun Devil was at the height of its power and randomly killed millions over several countries all at once, and after that went into hiding.

Another thing, the Chainsaw Man world, devils aside, has some other differences to our world, for example in that world the soviet union never fell and the US and Russia are still in the cold war.

Something left out of the anime from the manga when Makima was explaining the Gun Devil to Denji: It killed 1.2 million people all at once *all over the world.* It hit Japan, the USSR, the US, India, and some other places over the span of 5 minutes, killed 1.2 million people, and disappeared. And as others mentioned, the show takes place in the 90s, so the Gun Devil appeared in the 80s it seems. Oh and regarding the "geopolitics" of the world: there was a brief mention in the episode where Makima was talking to the board about her "new pets" where they mentioned that other countries like the USSR were starting to put devils in their military, and Japan is basically doing a test program with Makima's special unit as a reaction to that.

Oh, and to clear up a little confusion on the names: Topknot is Aki Hayakawa. In Japanese culture it's usually more respectful to call someone by their last name, hence we hear him addressed as Hayakawa frequently, but Himeno (eyepatch girl) calls him Aki because they're closer. And while we're on the subject of names, here they are for the new characters just for reference: Eyepatch girl: (no other name mentioned) Himeno Nervous girl: Kobeni Higashiyama Uptight guy: Arai Hirokazu the last two we usually just hear their first names, Kobeni and Arai
