Every month I do a giveaway of FPV gear here on Patreon. My policy has been to 100% cover shipping since I think that makes the giveaway more special. With USPS, shipping in the U.S. is almost always under $20, and international shipping is typically between $25 and $50, with occasional excursions as high as $70.

Here's the problem: USPS is, at the moment, completely unreliable for international shipping. And they don't even ship to all countries. The alternative is UPS, FedEx, or DHL, but they are running at least 2x to as much as 5x the price to deliver the same package. So instead of paying between $100 and $300 to ship prizes every month, I would be looking at $400 to $800.

I'm not sure what the best way to handle this is.

Basically, I probably am not going to be able to keep paying full price shipping to send prizes, so I have to make some decision about this. Instead of making the wrong decision and then pissing some people off and having to walk it back, I want to get your input on this now, before I decide what I'm going to do.

I am really opposed to asking the winner to pay shipping, especially because $150 in shipping might be less than the value of the prize.

I could just buy or give away gift cards. But I love the idea of giving away odds and ends from the channel. This is an easy way to give you value without costing me the price of prizes. And to be honest, it is a valuable way for me to clear out piles of stuff that I might not ever use again. And some people like the idea that they're getting some "behind the scenes" stuff.

One idea that I had was, instead of giving away four prizes each month, combine all prizes into one super-prize. At least then I only have to pay expensive shipping for one package.

Some people might suggest asking international winners to chip in for shipping, but I hate the idea that some people might be treated differently just because of where they live.

I dunno. Please let me know what you think.

I'm good with paying shipping, but I've never won anything in my life lol.

Anonymous

Joshua - I'm not sure I can be much help because my situation is kind of unique. I'm American living in Canada. I maintain a US address so if I was a winner it could be shipped there and then once a month or so I get mail and packages sent to me. Or I would pay the shipping without much concern but I may not be the same demographic as others. I'm good with whatever you decide to do.

Anonymous

I think the idea of a single prize seems good to me, I never win anyway hahaha

Anonymous

I'm from Spain, I'd be OK with paying the difference of cost between shipping to the US and shipping to Spain. Of course that is if the price is worth it. Silly example: it would not make sense to me to pay 30 dollars shipping for a 15 dollars receiver. But I'd be grateful to have the option.

Anonymous

It's a bad situation, how shipping is going. But I mean, the world's messed up right now. I think with everything going on with the postal service people get that shipping is messed up right now, and would be willing to chip in for shipping. Or to wait a few months to get their prizes. But I'm American so that's my bias in this situation. International people are more impacted by this clearly.

Anonymous

Before even getting to the bottom, I was on board with the one super prize. Most of us know people in the local community if you can't use it all which also helps promote the community.

Anonymous

Charge us the shipping bro, it is what it is. Thank you for all you do!

Anonymous

1 giveaway a month is more than fair, and would likely be more sustainable.

Anonymous

If you've got friends in Canada you could ship to them and then from them to the winner ? Probably cheaper but longer and more hassle

Anonymous

What if the winner pays the half of the shipping?

Anonymous

If you are completely opposed to us chipping in then the one prize option would be best for you.

Anonymous

Just have everyone pay for shipping if it exceeds $X.

Anonymous

Single prize is good

Anonymous

Maybe if an international patreon is the winner you can offer them the gift card

Anonymous

Difficult one, maybe an option for the winner to choose a gift card in lieu of the prize if shipping is not equitable. This way it's their decision and you are off the hook.

Anonymous

Maybe limit giveaways to a certain level patreon members? Idk if that is legal. Or take the banggood route and shipping will take 7 months but cost next to nothing for international.

Anonymous

I’m outside the US, and I wouldn’t mind chipping in for the shipping, or in the case of the Youtube giveaway, where you buy the stuff yourself, you could give the winner the option for a gift card for the same amount of the prize on an online store available, depending on what is available to that person

Anonymous

USPS and it takes as long as it takes or mega prize monthly

Anonymous

Honestly JB. As someone from Namibia who knows what shipping cost I understand how you feel. What you could do is try looking at www.myus.com they drop ship for very cheap. Since most of the gear you send is under 4lbs (which is the lowest you can ship a package) it should be cost effective, I mean a package sent here is under $50. I'd bet a lot of people would be willing to buy that. I'm a huge fan of the giving away odds and ends idea.

Anonymous

I don't like the idea of cashing in the shipping price. This will only result in a) less people participating and b) lots of "paperwork" for you. A big price is the better option in my oppinion (or maybe 2 medium prices?)

Anonymous

This is an easy one, Joshua. Keep the giveaway as is & have everybody pay their own shipping. Domestic & International. You're not treating anybody any differently than anyone else, this way. It's up to us to enter, so those that wish to deal with shipping costs can foot that cost. Have a great day, buddy.

Anonymous

This is a tough spot to be in. I would continue to giveaway the items that you want. I know you feel bad for asking people to pay shipping, but right now, with everything going on in the world, we all have to be understanding. Let people know, that if they sign up to win, they may incur a shipping charge, depending on where they live. It may be a temporary thing until things straightened out again, but remember, it is our choice to enter for the prize. If someone does not want to possibly pay for shipping , then they don't have to enter to win. There are plenty of people, myself included, that would and understand. You can't please everyone all of the time. I know you know this, but saying it "out loud" brings it fort forward.

thedroneracingengineer

My concern is not so much delay but missing packages. I am hearing from people who do a lot of international shipping that a lot of packages are just disappearing (tracking stops and never re-starts).

Anonymous

Single prize depleats the odds of actually winning. Might as well be lottery odds. More prizes more chance to win. Chipping in for shipping isn't asking too much at all. Regardless where you live shipping has options as far as price and speed of ship rate. That gives lots of options to everyone no matter where you are in the world. Thanks for always thinking of others Joshua, you're a stand up man. Keep doing what you do buddy!

Anonymous

One super prize winner would make them feel super special

thedroneracingengineer

Tying giveaway entry to payment level is not legal and is against Patreon TOS, although many Creators get away with doing it I prefer not to.

Anonymous

i kind of like to check out the different options you gave us in the past and then carefully choose the one that makes more sense for my specific situation before i naturally don't win anything :-) asking the winner to pay for shipping is reasonable in my oppinion. As a patreon i prefer that my donation ends up in "your" pocket and not at DHL.

Anonymous

I totally get it that this is a difficult decision and my opinion probably isn't gonna help.. Sorry in advance.. 😂 Firstly, the amount you give away is incredibly generous and you don't even "have" to do what you do and secondly, I'm in the UK and if I was to win anything, I genuinely wouldn't mind chipping in for the postage and if the postage was more than the value of the prize then maybe offer it back up as a redraw or something like that. Hope you can figure something out, hate to see you so out of pocket.. I'm pretty sure most people who support you will be communicative and understanding of your situation.

Anonymous

I would offer to pay shipping, the major problem for me would be customs and taxes lol. I have a solution in mind tho, theres this thing called myus I think, that basically lets us Europeans let them keep stock of packages until they send them out all in one package, but you can also ship individually, since they have like a deal with the shipping companies, the rates are usually 100$ max, so it wouldn't be as much of a pain to you, I can give you my address to look up prices on the website. My rates were like 50/60 bucks last year so I guess they could be higher

Anonymous

I think the most fair thing is if you pay shipping up to maybe $30 and they cover the rest. The one prize idea reduces my chance to win!

Anonymous

If you covered the original cost of shipping and just asked that the winners cover the additional, I think that would be fair. Don't stop giving away thing's from the channel. That's is the value of the item. We could all buy it from the store. 🤘

Anonymous

I think it would be a good idea for the people out of USA, send the price from a store in the country of the winner, but your components won't be able to send that way, only the store prices.

Anonymous

I know what you mean about the cost of shipping; it ain't cheap! However if I win a prize, just ask me if I want to pay the cost of international shipping. The answer would probably be yes.

Anonymous

I completely understand. Even though I have not won, 1 super prize would be fine with me.

Anonymous

I second Marks idea. Continue to pay your normal shipping price, any overages is up to the winner. Either way they are still winning weather they have to pay some shipping or not.

Anonymous

I think just get everyone to pay shipping

Anonymous

I think covering shipping to a certain amount 40 or 50 if you want then having winner pay difference but if value less than remaining I would want you to redraw a winner if it were me you would be shipping to and I didn't want to pay.

Anonymous

I'm sure you'll make the right decision, I never win anyways 😀

Anonymous

I think its reasonable to ask some ammount for shipping. When I won a giveaway a while back, this one guy asked me to pay 1/2 shipping which is totally reasonable. These people are already giving you money, they probably won't mind paying a tiny bit for a free prize. And then if the shipping is more than the prize, you could just send them a gift card or something.

Anonymous

As a previous winner, I would have been more than happy to have contributed (or completely paid) for shipping. Especially as I am in the UK so would have cost more to send me my prize. I think it's good of you to offer these giveaways. I think most people would be of the same opinion as me and be happy to give money towards shipping. I think multiple prizes is likely a preferred option for most as it gives more people a chance to win but a 'big' prize would be cool for one winner!

Anonymous

You could partner with the vendor of these products. For example you talk to RDQ/GetFPV (whoever) they make a coupon code (you offer to cover cost/wholesale cost of product) that is good for the one product or type of product. It also includes free or discounted shipping (they have economies of scale in shipping anyways). They know that people will likely add a few more items to the cart, or at the very least get them to “make a purchase” on their site which can lead to repeat sales. In the end the cost to you is the product, they cover shipping, you both get good press. Who knows you might make something for your time in affiliate up-sales.

Anonymous

Free shipping up to x amount of money. We appreciate you and what you do.

Anonymous

Winner pays the difference seems to be the most reasonable.

Anonymous

Shipping sucks... Shipping actual items in the USA only and maybe gift cards for over seas? I don't think many can afford to pay much for shipping, especially when the choice for parts might be a tough call on a $40 fc or a $50 fc.

Anonymous

Domestics pay half, internationals pay 3/4. I like the idea of having a chance to win 1 of 4 prizes and not just one.

Oxygen

But then again a gift card from who(m), there are a lot of organizations who I do not trust anymore (Banggood, Amazon for selling me cheap counterfeit items and when I ask them what the deal is nobody answers my questions anymore...)

Anonymous

This is true. When you’re talking about a free prize. I totally understand. I guess with the international patrons you can ask to cover a certain % of the shipping. Or if they don’t want that. You can offer a gift card for the value of the prize?

Anonymous

I think it's very cool that you do giveaways and definitely think that there is added value to getting "Joshua's stuff." Escalating shipping costs are not your fault, just your problem to solve in this case. I also like multiple prizes to multiple folks each month (vs the "super prize" pack). . .more chances to win while it is more likely that some components of the superprize will go unused by a single winner! My vote is, pick an amount that you are will to pay for shipping. You pay "up to" that cost with the remainder picked up by the winner. It can be incumbent on the entrant to guestimate your cost of shipping the item before they enter to see if they would be able to pick up to delta if they won (maybe add a link to a shipping cost calculator). You could also make one-off determinations for winners who are patreons based on how much they contribute per month and how long they've contributed (maybe you'd be willing to go over the set amount for a very generous donor). But I'd say that'd be up to you and should not be expected by any winner. Last thought: for winners in remote places (expensive shipping), you could give them the option to "auction off" the loot. The winner of the auction pays the shipping and the base profit of the auction goes to the original winner.

Anonymous

IMHO your giving away free stuff so why should you pay the shipping. My suggestion is that everyone pays the shipping costs for any prizes they win. If someone doesn't want to pay shipping then the next person in line on the drawing gets the chance to pay the shipping to them and get the free prize.

Anonymous

I'd say it's a case by case thing, if you've got an expensive item to ship then you could ask overseas winners to cover part of the shipping but if it's a smaller item then I'd be happy with a gift card and you can save the item for another giveaway.

Anonymous

As an international backer I’d be fine with paying the extra cost compared to regular international shipping with USPS. I could always choose to forfeit my price if I feel it’s not worth the small shipping fee.

Anonymous

The prize is free, so winners having to pay for shipping is totally reasonable! If it's not worth the cost, let the winner make the call and re-draw. You care so much and everyone knows that already, so don't worry too about what some people might think.

Anonymous

R3OBGYN - Keep up the give aways. I will increase my monthly patron donation to help cover the expense.... RR

Anonymous

As a Patron, I’m financially stable enough to donate money to entertainers I enjoy, when I don’t have to. If a prize was up for grabs with a shipping fee, it would up to me to do a cost/benefit analysis to determine if I really wanted some of that sweet sweet JB gear! I love the behind the scenes random stuff! I would feel bad if it was one big prize, because sometimes I know there’s something there that I really don’t care about, and it reduces the odds for everyone a little more. If there was a fee, or a fee over a initial cost that was covered, and that was disclosed ahead of time, it would be easy for me to determine if its something I wanted to participate in. I really appreciate the fact that you care about us all! Respect!

Anonymous

Extra work, but maybe offer the international winners the option of paying the difference in shipping, or let Patreons bid for it, with the proceeds going on an electronic gift card to the international prize winner - then $0 international shipping costs.

Anonymous

I have not been a patron for long, but in the time I have been one, I have seen how extremely you care for us. I think you put far too much a priority on your patrons. We’re here to support you for what you ALREADY do, not for what more you will do for us. So I’d say just do whatever is easiest and best for you, and do it knowing you deserve to have a clear conscious and that we will be okay regardless the decision you make.

Anonymous

Might be worth partnering/affiliation with a service like shipito.com since it's a regular thing you do. Also then leave it up to the patreon, to select their method of shipping from shipito.

Anonymous

Hi Joshua All though the giveaways are very generous of you, I doubt any of us want you to spend your hard earned money to ship us free stuff. Shipping can be expensive and you're correct in saying that on some occasions the shipping cost outweighs the item being shipped. One option would be to put the items in a forum or classifieds for next to no money and have us pay shipping. Just a thought. Thank you, Joshua for all that you do. LONG LIVE FPV!

Anonymous

I hate to say it, being it would impact me even, but I would put another Patreon tier in that opens up prize wins, and those at that level and higher are automatically entered. Recently I got bit by running a giveaway for a filament sample, and the winner is in London. I ate the cost, which was double that of the sample, because I said they won, and I don't go back on my word if at all possible. It opened my eyes though on why so many contests don't cover people outside the country of the person running the contest.

Anonymous

If I win something, I would be happy to pay for the shipping. I don't think that's too much to ask. If you don't wanna pay for shipping don't enter the giveaway.

Anonymous

Yeah I think gift cards are a good opinion if you are against having winners pay for shipping. Really love being a part of your discord the give aways are just topping on the cake.

Anonymous

I'd be happy paying for shipping if I won something.

Anonymous

Hi Joshua, I run a few E-Commerce companies and the shipping cost can be dramatically reduced by using a platform like ShipStation and partnering with their carrier accounts. You get to share in their massive discounts. If you think this is the best way to move forward, please feel free to reach out anytime. I’m happy to help.

Anonymous

Let's let them all pay for shipping there's nothing wrong with that I would be happy just to get a prize I'd be more than happy to pay for the shipping.

Anonymous

Just ask anyone that wins to pay shipping if it is to hi for you or ship if they want it they want it they well be glade to pay I think if they don't want it pick someone else

Anonymous

I would rate 1x big prize. I wont mind paying half the shipping, seeing as a whole 5" drone is worth it. But it is a difficult situation. I would suggest changing the way you do the giveaway for the time being until shipping etc is back to normal.

Anonymous

Personally I would be happy to pay the shipping were I to win. I never even thought about that having to be done so thanks Joshua for all the shipping costs you've already paid so all of us can benefit from your knowledge and generosity! Thanks for your consideration and asking our opinions. 🙂

Anonymous

Is international members that big?! Maybe have 2 give away a US only and 2 only international being gift cards

Anonymous

Make it easy, one super prize and then maybe 3 smallish gift certificates. Best use of your time and money I think.

Anonymous

It's not fair to you to be expected to cover shipping for your generous giveaways. Just a thought, and not sure if this is possible, but what if there was a $1 fee to enter into the giveaway... like buying a raffle ticket. The proceeds would defray your shipping costs and entrants are more likely to be seriously interested in winning the prize.

Anonymous

Their are many products from the US that I'd love to buy. Kababs fpv shop for example but yes the shipping to the UK is very expensive. If I was to win something from yourself (I wish) then I'd certainly be happy to cover the costs as long as the prize value outweighed the shipping fee.

Anonymous

Find some cheap way to ship internationally. This winter, I was buing in US Atomik case for my Spektrum DX9, shipping to switzerland cost $8.95. For me, gift card would be TBH useless. I am not joining giveaways for the value of prize, but for the fun. Even winnig beer coaster signed by JB would be waaay more valuable for me than $500 gift card.

Anonymous

A lot of people say the would pay the shipping, but I doubt many would pay more for shipping as the prize is worth. I have won one time but I rejected the prize. It was a eachine novice kit, i should pay have the shipping (fair I think). But it would be useless for me, so I didn't want to get it. Please take thinks like this into account, It can me a lot more work you you to handle the shipping with the winner. For me bigger prize bundles, so it is worth paying for shipping, or gift cards would be nice. But then please also gift cards for EU shops :)

Anonymous

I think covering a set dollar amount for shipping is reasonable. This would not only apply to international orders but large or heavy ones that are more expensive to ship.

Anonymous

Since I live in Alaska, I have a lot of experience with shipping cost issues. Basically shipping costs are often prohibitive for anything large or heavy

Anonymous

My first thought was that winners would pay a set amount for shipping in the US or Overseas. Say $15.00 for the US shipments, and maybe $25.00 for Overseas destinations. Then, you would pick up the excess over those amounts. I still think that's viable. On the other hand, I love David Wurzbach's idea of having to "ante up" to be a contest winner and Joshua would pay shipping costs from the antes...A little bit like playing poker: you've got to pay to get in to win. I don't think that any of these ideas are bad. I know you don't want winners to have to pay anything, but asking for folks to pay a $20 minimum for shipping on a $200 quad, for example, is a pretty darn good deal. But, I really love the Ante idea as well; It would sure limit the entry pool to those who really hope to win and care about winning. Honestly, I really think that most of us are just thrilled to have a chance to win some of this gear, that we might never buy for ourselves (because it would break our budget).

thedroneracingengineer

It seems like MyUS is focused on the account holder shipping from many addresses to one address. Have they got plans for somebody like me where I would be sending to many different countries?

Anonymous

opps, bumped the return key, LOL. Anyway, the best deal going is using U.S.P.S. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for shipment to all 50 states (including Alaska and Hawaii), since it is currently only $15.05 to ship a Medium Flat Rate Box or $21.10 to ship a Large Flat Rate Box, regardless of the weight. So one idea would be to have "dual giveaways",.. a U.S. one where you would still cover the Flat Rate postage, and an International one which offered the option of a "gift card of equal value" or the International winner paying for all but $20 of the shipping cost.

Anonymous

Personally, I'd be happy to pay the shipping if I won something. If I win something and don't have to pay for it, what's wrong with agreeing to cover the cost of shipping (and insurance if necessary)? A fair arrangment, IMHO.

Anonymous

Can you work with the distributor's? Everything comes from somewhere and most distributor's have something worked out or we wouldn't have "free" shipping for so many things. I assume certain products are favored by different distributor's for a variety of reasons so it follows that it wouldn't always be the same distributor for each item.

Anonymous

I know if I won a flight controller and had to set up an account with a specific vendor I would probably add a box, motors and frame to the "prize".

Anonymous

As a UPS driver myself, I understand the cost issue. Super prize with winner paying shipping sounds like the way to go, for me. We all know that things are messed up, but maybe not all on the pandemic at this point. I think things could change quickly after November. (January of 2021) if things work out the way I think they should, but,,,preparation for anything should be thought about and I'm glad you are doing that.

Anonymous

Just charge everyone a flat rate for shipping that greatly offsets your shipping expenses JB. I'm not a big fan of the one large prize considering you have alot of Patreons and also non Patreons who can enter.

Anonymous

I feel like some people need to understand how expensive it is to ship. If it’s international they should get gift cards and here in the US we should get the random things. That’s my honest opinion in which everyone has one. Yes getting things you have at random like a FC OR QUAD ETC... is awesome but I’m not going o complain if I get an gift card either.

Anonymous

Actually charge the non Patreons a little more if they win...

Anonymous

Gang, its all about the rules and hoops Joshua is going to have to jump through, And no matter how this plays out, he will have our support. Not everyone joins in on the give-aways, but those that do could help by donating a buck, seems like a sound idea, but will it cover all the different costs of shipping? I like the idea of antes... might have antes on the top shipping cost {international} of each prize won? I am sure Joshua would have a good idea what those are, and aim at the highest for international, but you would have to ante to win. Both these ideas are great, but somewhat have the taste of gambling, and I am pretty sure the rules Joshua has to follow are going to make these ideas a showstoppers. Though... I love the fact that we are winning the extra things he works with, or can no longer use. I can't say why, but it feels personal, and Joshua's patreon group feels more like a family. Sorta want to keep it the way, Gentlemen. I too am willing to pay for shipping, but there are many here that are doing their best just to pay the patreon because of how the world has changed in the last four months. Money for everything has been less. The only way I can see around the legal rules may for those that can make actual donations for antes of the three prizes. Yes, some won't be able, but our group may gather its strength and do so for the weaker. Joshua is looking for this group's conscious to speak... the truth may sting, but please speak up. We are all here to support Joshua, FPV and each other.

Anonymous

I won a NBD toolkit and the Sperry Multimeter last month and found out that Joshua was paying shipping. So, I donated some money to offset that cost. I personally didn't think that was fair for him to eat the cost. In reality, that's probably the easiest way for Joshua and patreons to do this. You're still getting a great deal by getting something cool for the cost of shipping. Since this is a volunteer giveaway, you would agree by paying shipping costs when you sign up. Joshua can still give out stuff he's accumulated and we get awesome stuff.

Anonymous

One super prize is the way. :) I'm really not here for the giveaways anyway. It's your content that's woth everything to me. Than you!

Anonymous

I would be happy to pay a shipping cost if I won something

Anonymous

Give always are a bonus as I’m not just here for them , would be willing to make a donation to mail costs if was a winner , one super prize sounds ok to me as well , the knowledge you pass on is the best prize keep it up Joshua

Anonymous

Personally I'd be happy to pay shipping. But I'm not gonna complain either way. The prize for me is all the info and knowledge Joshua shares.

Anonymous

Prices are doubled now, so ask winners pay half. You’ll have the same expense. I like the idea of multiple winners. The odds are better for multiple winners.

Anonymous

I would be willing to pay 100% of shipping for the giveaways, personally. Never thought it was fair that you paid for it to begin with.

Anonymous

I have no problem paying for shipping. You have my support no matter what you decide.

Anonymous

I am happy to pay shipping, if its less than the value of the item. I also agree with the idea of a superprize less often. Its a tough call , whatever you decide Joshua, I am sure as patrons we are happy with your decision, it's still free stuff!!

Anonymous

I never even entered the giveaways. I'd honestly consider letting the winner decide if he wants the prize bad enough to pay for themselves or if they would rather get a giftcard instead (or just pass on to somebody else instead). Either way: I'm probably going to be one of those who'll have to pay extra for shipping but I don't really mind. As long as I don't have to pay customs when it gets here 😂I wouldn't really be annoyed; whatever you did.

Anonymous

I have no problem to pay shipping.

Anonymous

I live in the UK and recently ordered things via USPS. I was willing to wait however long it took because to use UPS or another courier was very expensive and the things I was ordering were simply not available from a supplier in the UK. To my surprise USPS wasn't that bad. Personally if I won a something in the giveaway and had to wait a while for it then I'd still be happy. I think you just need to make it clear to international winners that they might have to wait and carry on using USPS. They're really not that bad.

Anonymous

I’d be fine paying shipping as well. Here’s another thought. For international folks, use eBay, a private listing, invite the winner for a penny, and use the Global Post option. When I sell stuff and it goes abroad, it goes through eBay’s global post system, which is a PO Box in the US where they handle the transfer out of the country.

Anonymous

I would pay for the shipping too. Having multiple prizes per month is cool because at least we could win a small prize. If the winner could choose between paying the shipping costs and a gift card would be even better!

Anonymous

I'm OK with paying for shipping, as long as the total value of the prize is higher than the shipping would be (I'm US based though, so I'm sure it would be). If the shipping comes out to $70 or more for international, you could always sweeten the pot a bit with some extra swag, I'm sure you have stickers/tshirts/random nonsense laying about that would make it sting less. Maybe just sign a 10x14 picture of yourself or the RR crew with a personalized message. That would definitely make it sting less.

Anonymous

It is not right for you to give something away to us for free, and it costing you money out of your pocket. I'd gladly pay the shipping. Thanks for all that you do.

Anonymous

Since You tent to give away some of Your stuff as well as products from related shops, it would be an option to only open the random stuff giveaway to US guys, and only giveaway store products or gift cards to internationals, where the shipping is handled by the shop. Not ideal, but saves You the expense. Otherwise the eBay idea seems interesting.

Anonymous

Anyone who wins in any arrangement should be elated! Excited to get into the running, but it might make good extra content to build and tune quads for monthly prizes. If you happen to be stacking up on components it might be a good way to level out stock, create residuals through content. and we benefit from an invaluable shot at grade A QA from the man himself. I like your idea of offering a digital alternative to foreign shipping though, seems the most intuitive.

Anonymous

For me I’m happy to PayPal you something to help with shipping.

Anonymous

I wouldn't be opposed to b paying for shipping. If the shipping exceeds the prize amount maybe throw in a gift card or something along those lines to keep the prize amount higher than the shipping at the same time keeping the weight down.. thanks again for everything you do !🤟😁

Anonymous

Like we donate via patreon, perhaps a portion of patreon funds could be used?

Anonymous

Maybe set a cap on shipping that you can pay?

Anonymous

Just use Banggood Express to ship. ;)

Anonymous

I say go with the super prize.

Anonymous

I live in England and i would expect to pay the shipping anyway buddy, i'm shocked that you do that.

Anonymous

I say go with the super prize. I live in Argentina and I would definitely chip in for the shipping.

Anonymous

Some of the other channels require a shipping charge if you win. I won something last month and was asked to pay $10.00 to help with the shipping from the UK to the US. I wouldn't have a problem with it in these crazy times. You're already getting a great deal if you win something, paying shipping is kinda paying it forward.

Anonymous

What about sending all the stuff in one Packet to a trustful Patron (e. g. Me) abroad and he gonna send it with normal Post to the Winners. Only Tax could be a Problem

I understand your problem Joshua and I really like the idea that you 're-cycle' your stuff to other users, much better than giving out gift cards. here are my thoughts: The idea of a Super-Prize will further reduce the chance of ever winning something in your giveaways, not very appealing to me however if you were to ask me contribute $10 to shipping because I am overseas, I would be very happy to do so. If the shipping cost comes close to the value of the giveaway the whole exercise is becoming pointless for the recipient. Love your work and love your channel.

If you add a flat shipping rate on top of each prize pack (say $10USD) that may make it equatible to everyone. In saying that, $10USD is relativily worth more to some countries.

I'd be happy top pay for shipping if it's similar to what I pay from other stores

Anonymous

Paying for shipment is not a problem for me. There is a service that offers a great solution for lowering freight costs: https://myus.com. You get a US address and, they take care of shipping, custom declarations etc. A bit more work for the winner, but worth it.

Anonymous

Personally I'd be okay with chipping into the shipping cost. maybe asking for a flat fee for international of $5-10 everyone here understands the pain it is and getting some money to chip in towards winning the prize shouldn't really be a issue regarding price size, I like that there is a number of prices available odds of winning are up quite a bit.

One big prize is my vote!

Anonymous

Go with super prize only way 🎁

Anonymous

Do both? Main prize free shipping... secondary prizes need a chip in.

Anonymous

To me the flat rate of $10 for shipping seems like a good idea.

Dear Joshua, Please keep international shipping as low as possible and keep using USPS. They will take care of your packages anyway. The downside is that it'll take much more time to go through your patreon winners but it's the same all over the world right now. UPS, FedEx and DHL are good but way too expensive for this specific job, don't you think?

Anonymous

I don't think 1 big prize is good, better to share the wealth, er I mean quad stuff, lol I think since you don't want to ask for shipping costs you should pay what you've always been paying, and the winner cover the rest. It's not the best I understand, but hopefully we will get back to where we were before covid. If the winner chooses not to pay, give them the option to choose someone else to receive the prize. Someone overseas won part of a quad on Instagram, but shipping was too much, the winner picked me to get it since I live in the states. I made a good friend in the process. I know it wouldn't bother me at all to pay shipping. If I could just win that grab bag of nonsense, lol Take care JB

Anonymous

Split the shipping cost. Have the Patreon pay half and you take care of the other half. I myself don't mind paying the total shipping cost.

Anonymous

Good Luck. I will support you in whichever you choose.

Anonymous

I wouldn't mind paying for the shipping, granted I am in the states so shipping wouldn't be outrageous anyway.

Anonymous

Just have everyone pay for their shipping.. It's not that big of a deal, at least to me..If I enter the giveaway with the understanding that I might have to pay shipping, that's fine with me. If I don't have $$ for shipping I won't enter the giveaway simple as that. Maybe you can have a few special giveaways that include shipping occasionally, to give everyone else a chance.

Anonymous

I agree with Gary above.. if you win the prize you pay for shipping. Alternatively, you could have a flat amount that you are willing to pay for shipping and the winner pays the rest.

Anonymous

I have not read all the comments. Maybe you could put a few options to a vote, as advisory only. But I would lean towards one give away per month, and one shipping charge. I get that you want it to be totally free for the winner. And getting stuff that was probably used in a JB video would be cool. But with the recent changes in the shipping game, it is becoming quite burdensome.

Anonymous

I'm with Gary & Philip above. Either the winner pays shipping, or you have a fixed amount you pay, and the winner pays the difference. If it costs more to ship to a place where people are from you, they should be willing to pay. That is fair. I have property in Alaska, and guess what, when I want to ship things there, it costs me more. I expect that.

Anonymous

I'd gladly pay for any shipping costs if I were to win. I like the idea of more smaller prizes vs large just for more chances to win but understand that it is not cost effective.

Anonymous

I live in Europe and shipping from/to the US is way to expensive. I agree with Philip Eville, use a flat amount, the winner pay's the rest.

Anonymous

Maybe ship prizes to US but give International winners the option to help chip in for shipping or receive a gift card instead? I live in the US, but I can see how maybe a winner might like $50 gift card or whatever instead of misc. quad stuff 3 months later.

Joshua, I have learned more from you than anyone in FPV. And thats why I am here in your patreon, I have wanted to be apart of what you have been doing for FPV World, and apart of the Pilots that understand who you are. You give all us way more time, and I am betting, than most of us give our spouses... do remember to pet your wife. Videos, discord, facebook and writing other back with answers... thank you for creating the time you do for us, and also asking us for opinions and/or help when matters such as this confront you. So here is only my opinion. I am not a big fan of making just one grant prize, because three people get to share the things you use to help us. You surely can understand that a gift card just does not have that feel. Like most that have given their opinion I too am more than willing to pay for shipping. But as I read what you had written, I too feel as you do “Some people might suggest asking international winners to chip in for shipping, but I hate the idea that some people might be treated differently just because of where they live.” I am not sure what we as a group can do to fix this, but you will have my support.

JB - I’ve learned a lot from you. I have no problem paying for shipping.

Anonymous

Whatever the outcome is don't ever be sorry. We're so lucky to have you weather your doing giveaways or not which is just an extra. Were all patrons because we really like what you do and we want to support you. I honestly think your the most helpful and best teaching YouTuber out there and that why I am on your Patreon.

Hi Joshua. Ok I hope this idea gets attention because I feel it may be the most fair of all and hopefully take care of this problem. Ok so right now I'm a 5 Dollar a month subscriber but I can still enter the giveaway. What if in order to be eligible for the give away you had to be a minimum of 10 or 15? This would allow for increased money to go to shipping that everyone is chipping in on and it keeps the prizes free of additional shipping costs.

Anonymous

I live in AU and like many others, I’d be happy to pay for international shipping should I win a giveaway. DHL express is a solid USD$30+ slog rn on any order from the US, so I’d choose to wait a bit longer and go for tracked USPS instead, given the option. Perhaps that’s a thing too; give us the option to pay for fast and expensive or slower and cheaper shipping. Either way, thanks for all your hard work, JB. I pass on a link to your shopping list to anybody who asks for tips on building their first quad.

Insanity. How on earth can DHL charge like $100 to ship. :O. Hope it changes when Corona settles. On top of the shipping, lots of us in the EU also end up paying toll, VAT and handling fees even on parcels sent by family and friends, and companies like UPS and DHL can without shame add handling fees more then the item, VAT and toll is together. I had a friend send me some stickers in an envelope from the US and ended up paying $35 in handling for it to be custom cleared and delivered to my mailbox. I sadly think it will be difficult to find a solution other then gift cards near the winner if one is looking for a cost effective solution that will work smoothly, but of course it is more fun to have a chanse to win something that you have actually put your hands on.

I like your attitude, Joshua, of equality. Not just there's one tier for Patreon, but even thinking not to make difference to the people out of US. My proposal would be to increase our donation to you. If you would increase the support to $2,30 I'm sure it will cover all the costs. And yes, you would need to consider if that change would not affect decrease of Patreons, but still, that's less than two coffees in most of the world - I'd say.

Anonymous

I've just found there's not just one Patreon tier... LOL. So I've increased my donation.

Anonymous

I would pay shipping

Anonymous

UK is difficult for oversea patreons as not only the shipping expensive you get hammered on importation charges

Anonymous

I vote for one lump of a prize each time! We (I) don't sign up for the freebies so for a lucky winner any free stuff is a bonus and can be used or shared.

Anonymous

Well... i live in mexico, i totally unsderstood if chip it is the way. and if i am on hurry or something, just pay the difference, right?

Anonymous

I would pay if I ever won. I'm like 5hrs away so I dont think it would be to pricey.

Anonymous

you have 2,600 patrons, you should def be able to fork it over for shipping :D
