tldr; AnimeCon Harem project planning notes.

Continuing the research on short chapter format I started in September, I've been using Royal Road as a testbed for a publish order format, for when AnimeCon Harem is published as an e-book, or actual physical book. While I prefer large chapter format (25,000-word average chapters) for online reading, short chapter or 'serial' format is better on some sites and in actual books.

The story neatly divides into 3,000-word average short chapters. Adults read at roughly 275 words a minute, which should give the chapters a 10 to 15 minute reading time, fairly ideal. One of the major benefits of this reading order is that I'm easily able to break up the long Emily chapter and intersperse it among reading about Stephanie, Brian, and Kelly at the convention.

I only had to combine separate sections once; the Rebecca POV portion of Out of the Blue was very short and became attached to part of the Mary: the Mastery portion where they're sitting together in the cafe.

In general, smaller chapters are better online as you "bump" your story more often, earning more eyeballs. It's a good format choice.

This is generally true, but I confess that most of the early small chapter titles are unfamiliar to me because I was introduced to the story in larger chapter blocs. I look forward to hearing how this goes.

It's definitely superior for attracting more attention... there's just something so unsatisfying to me in reading it in tiny portions, haha.
