86, Haikyuu, and what looks like will be HxH is such a good lineup - I wish I could buy a 1 year sub at a time I can't wait <3

Matt Rhinehart

This has been so good, cant wait for 86.

KaijinGarou

Claudia said he'd like to have a daughter but like someday in the future, he wasn't going to have one. He's not even in a relationship from what I know.

Mariam

One of my favorite movies, Thank you so much!! Can't wait for 86!!!!🔥

TetraLuna

also KyoAni is definitely one of the best studios out there when it comes to animation, especially for animation of the little details. A couple recommendations: -Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid which is a really fun comedy revolving around a dragon that becomes someone's maid -Hibike Euphonium is a cute slice of life about band kids -Beyond the Boundary is one of my personal favorites that's got some magic/spirit themes similar to JJK (just not near as dark/gruesome lol) -Nichijou is also a super fun one with a lot of gag humor and various outlandish antics in everyday life -Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also an anime classic. About a girl that dislikes ordinary things so she starts a club to find things that aren't ordinary like aliens and telepaths and such

Jason

Watching Ange being salty to the show and Gilbert is the funniest thing I have seen in a while😂

Matthias Kamm

Oh no .. I need to grab some beers for this.

Thank you! I was looking forward to this reaction! PS: Dietfried Bougainvillea MVP

I loved the end discussion, because Ange is the first person I've seen that took the movie like I did initially. I didn't understand Gilbert fully, I was angry at him and at the end I felt very little sympathy for him, mainly being happy for Violet and Dietfrid. I thought about this movie a lot in the subsequent weeks and then it struck me. I didn't have to agree with Gilbert's reasoning, quite the opposite actually. His logic IS flawed, he IS being a jerk and I don't need to empathize with the way he acts during the movie. Trauma has no logic. Trauma is just him being 100% sure that he ruined Violet's life, despite everyone telling him he's wrong. It's not something that goes away because someone makes you logically think about it. The words that make him snap are not in Violet's letter. It's Dietfried telling him "you're free" and finally telling him that he can act like he's just some guy, instead of a major. That's what he needed. I hated Gilbert's role in this movie when I finished it. Now I sob hard when I see him speaking with his brother. I feel it's so visceral.

I think for me personally looking back at the series, I’m still not sure how I feel about Gilbert being alive but seeing how much Violet still wasn’t able to find peace or happiness without having a final answer it definitely made me happy for her. As far has Gilbert’s role in the movie I’m was with Ange in that I understood where he was coming from but it still frustrated me a lot. But I think that the movie did a good job of re-evaluating the audiences view of Gilbert because anytime we would see him before it was from Violets perspective. So we were given this picture of a perfect man who was a savior and guiding light for Violet, but the movie stripped us of those notions and reminded us that he is a human just like all of us and that he also has his flaws and struggles. And that was the whole point of the series, to show that human emotions are complex, things aren’t always black and white and they don’t always go the way we hope. Overall I think it was a solid wrap up for the series as a whole, but someone could very easily choose not to watch the movie or pretend it doesn’t exist and still be satisfied with the way the original series ended. Also I really liked the directing with Anne’s granddaughter in the future following Violets path and reminding us that even in a day and age where we can instantly communicate with another person no matter where there are, there’s still a certain feeling about receiving a letter from someone special that can’t be matched.

I’ll never understand people thinking that Gilbert surviving somehow ruined the message of the story… first of all, Violet’s arc wasn’t about coming to terms with his death. It was about learning to live freely as her own person. She did all of that only because she was separated from him. She agreed to stay that way only because Hodgins told her that’s what Gilbert wanted, and when she was told he was probably dead, she had to come to terms with the fact that he may not be in her life anymore. He nearly wasn’t. But now, learning that he is alive, we see her choose to return not because she saw herself as his tool, but because she knew she truly loved him. And she nearly left again, because she knew she could survive without him. Seeing her return to him as this new person with a new understanding of her own feelings and worth was a great way to end this story.

For those who don’t like how the movie went (like me), you should really try reading the original source, which is the light novel. It has a way better ending and afterwards story. However, beware that since the anime adaptation greatly divert from the source, you may find some differences in how the characters are portrayed, especially Gilbert and Violet. I’ll put them down here so you can consider whether you want to read it or not. BIG SPOILERS AHEAD: 1. The novel describes Violet’s past as a soldier in more detail and the fighting scenes were quite ruthless. And unlike the anime Violet, novel Violet doesn’t have a post war PTSD. So the character development where she learns to love herself after the war maybe not present in the novel. 2. The novel goes way more detailed in telling the story from Gilbert’s point of view so you have a better understanding of how he sees things from the start. So he actually never runs away from his duties. They were both brought to the hospital together, but he woke up first and decided that he should hide himself from her. The reason be that he’s afraid that with him always by her side, she will keep thinking about herself as a tool and will just blindly follow his orders. So he removed himself from her life so she is forced to think for herself what she wants to do now that her master is gone and gives her a chance to connect with other people. But unlike the anime Gilbert who just simply runs away, The novel Gilbert always keeps an eye out for Violet’s wellbeing from a distance. In fact, almost everyone including Claudia and Fried rice knows about his plan, and Claudia is actually the messenger who regularly sends him updates on how Violet is going. So anything Gilbert wants to do for Violet, he gets Claudia to do it in his stead. 3. This is a very importatnt scene in the novel that got me very disappointed for it wasn’t adapted in the anime. Their reunion is actually not on the island like in the movie. It actually happens way back in the last episode of the series. Rememer the train hijacking incident? In the novel, Violet was actually almost killed by the enemy, and it was Gilbert who jumped in to save her. At that point, he still wasn’t aure if he should himself to her. But weighing between her safety and his own uncertain feelings, the former is clearly more important. He was also the one to lead the army and rescue everyone from the train. This incident in the novel has way more action and stuff going on than in anime. And their reunion would be so emotional and cinmeatic (if being adapted) since it happened in the midst of the chaos and Gilbert appered in front of Violet just like a hero like he has always been to her. In this scene, Violet is actually the one to beg him not to leave her and seeing how despearate Violet, Gilbert agreed. Yep he didn’t have to make Violet wait for hours in the rain to come to that decision.

Watch something happy next! I recommend Clannad!

If you guys ever want to dive back into KyoAni, I honestly think you'll enjoy A Silent Voice, which is a movie and the show Hibike! Euphonium. Both have top tier visuals, characters, and scores. But anyways love this movie and I tear up every time. Easily a 9.5/10 for me.

Decaf

I enjoyed the movie but yeah it was quite long. I was happy for Violet with Gilbert being alive but I was expecting Gilbert's timeline little off from Violet's. Something like Violet visits the island and finds Gilbert's grave but she comes to closure through Gilbert's legacy left on the island.. something like that.

Amrith

No one here is going to call Ange out for calling Megalodons disgusting? Please do watch Megashark, Megashark vs Giant Octopus and MegaShark vs Corcosaurus to see a complete character arc that a Megalodon goes through. In one of the movies the Shark swallows an entire nuclear submarine and the shark itself goes nuclear, like godzilla, in order to fight it's adversary.

Amrith

Even with all the Jilbert fiasco, this movie is still a masterpiece. I am glad every other character realizes what Jilbert was doing was absolutely wrong and I am glad the script at least addressed that.

KaijinGarou

Yeah they definitely made Fried Rice look better and Claudia even better but Jilbert was supposed to annoy me and then make up for it but he stopped at annoy me xD.

Martina

okay so my thoughts on the ending: I really didn't like that Violet quit her job, leaving all her friends and all the people who still needed her talent as a doll. for me, the ideal ending would be Violet meeting Gilbert, saying their I love yous, but realizing she can finally go on without him, as she is now a complete person and no one's tool. she would go back to Leiden and continue her work as a famous doll, he would stay on the island and atone for his sins just like Violet has throughout the show. and then maybe we could have them meet in the future as a final scene. but still, it was a beautiful movie.

Hoa Trương

Violet didn't quit her job though. She still work as a Doll, just not for Claudia and at Leiden anymore. She still work as a Doll on that island in another company.

I don't understand why some people would want Gilbert to be dead. Gilbert's survival doesn't invalidate anything about Violet's journey (on the contrary!). This isn't an anime about Violet's mourning. Violet never mourns Gilbert. In fact, she's the only character who repeats right up to the end that she believes he's alive, somewhere. This film is a logical sequel. After learning empathy, after building herself as a person, after "healing"... she then has the opportunity to build a happiness for 2. Which could never have been the case for Violet in episode 1. And if experiencing love isn't a path that makes perfect sense for a character who didn't even understand the meaning of the words... I have a bit more reservations about the treatment of Gilbert. The character is interesting and consistent with the monsters of his past. The problem is that Violet has had 13 episodes and 2 OVAs for her development to be properly dealt with, whereas Gilbert has to do it in half a film. His evolution is too fast, and doesn't sound quite right. That's the problem with the film. It's still an amazing movie, a magnificent conclusion and Violet Evergarden is one of the greatest anime and undeniably the most visually beautiful. The production quality is absolutely in-sane! KyoAni have outdone themselves here.

Gabriel Barott

I didn't WANT Gilbert dead, per se. I just didn't think him being alive provided much to the conclusion of Violet's journey. No one said him being alive invalidates her journey either, it just doesn't strengthen it, imo. Additionally, and this goes without saying I'd assume, love isn't only defined by romantic relationships with someone. Love is something that she already discovered, through her friends and the people she met. She doesn't need Gilbert's romance to move forward OR be happy/content. She is a very strong willed character by the end of the series, and I believe her happiness would never hinge on him being alive.

GTB

I understood. When I said "want him dead" I meant his presumed death in the story. The idea was to say that some wanted Gilbert to remain absent/disappeared ;). "She doesn't need Gilbert's romance to move forward OR be happy/content". 2 comments: 1) What does that mean? Basically, nobody NEEDS romance. Do you? Do I? Does Ange need Carlie or Carlie need Ange? We can all have a good life without romance. Romance is not needed, and yet, romantic love is everywhere and the notion of a couple is present in every society. So, what's the point? 2) Have you carefuly watched the show? Have we watched the same story? The same character? The same end of ep 13 ?...What the show is about ? What difference between Violet at ep 1 and ep 13 ? What the show is about ? Ep 1 give the answer twice. First time, from the very first seconds. Opening scene : Violet seeing the brooch. "I see your eyes. I felt something. What is this feeling called ?" cut. This opening scene directly announces that the show is about this girl who will understand her feelings for this man. As I said, at no point does the story mention Violet forgetting Gilbert. Not once. On the contrary, from the very first episode to the very last seconds, Gilbert is in her thoughts. At the end of ep 1, there's a very important scene. Violet says she wants to become an Auto Memories Doll because she wants to understand Gilbert's words (feelings). This scene is important because it finalizes the prologue by saying for the second times what the show is about. This scene is important also because 1) Violet expresses her own will for the first time 2) This will is to understand Gilbert (She will repeat this reason multiple times throughout the show. making clear this is her main motivation). Ep 1 opens with Violet writing to Gilbert (a report), the final episode ends with Violet writing to Gilbert (a real letter). Deliberate mirror scenes. Because what this story is about is that in trying to understand Gilbert's words/feelings (and those of others), she will understand her own feelings. She doesn't fall in love with Gilbert, she understands that she already felt that way. And do you remember the end of ep 13 ? Do you remember the words of her letter ? "I am still waiting for your return [...] First, I didn't understand any of your feelings, but I started learning from the new life you've provided me [...] I still believe you are still alive out there somewhere. THIS IS WHY I will continue to live [...] If we should ever MEET AGAIN, this is what I would tell you : I now understand what the words I LOVE YOU mean => she understand cause she understand her own feelings => she is literally saying she would want to tell him I Love you (crying cause she can't do it)" How on earth is it possible to understand from these words that she doesn't need him ? Every.word.calls.for.Gilbert. This is a huge love letter. She went from a report to a love letter. She's now a person able to have proper relationships. And it introduce for what comes next (it's different in the original light novel but Violet and Gilbert are in a relationship as well). So yeah. The show could have ended at ep13. It was a good ending. A bittersweet ending that I found perfect. But it didn't end Violet's journey. The sequel does, and in a coherent way. And I'll say it again, when you look at the subject of the series, and Violet's development... it makes perfect sense for Gilbert to be the next step, happy or unhappy ending. And personally, I think Violet's been through enough tragedy, she deserves to be happy with what's most important to her... because that makes sense for a series about healing. It's in keeping with her journey, with her evolution, with her motivations, with her feelings, with the person she's become. And what Martina suggests: "but realizing she can finally go on without him, as she is now a complete person". ...because...? Seriously, why ? What's the point ? and how write this non-sens with this Violet for whom Gilbert means the world ? What would it tell? What would it mean for Violet? What thematic significance would it have? And, is she a less complete person with Gilbert? Why ? When you write something, the question you ask yourself the most is "meaning". Why would Violet act this way? What sense would it make? Why does she need to realize that she doesn't need him? What does it mean thematically? Without asking "why" and the question of the meaning of what you write...Violet's ending could have been anything and everything else. I get the feeling that what's bothering some people here is just that Violet loves Gilbert madly. They seem to perceive this as if it were a bad thing for her. Why? Love is shit or prison? Am I missing something? ps: I can recommend Euro Brady (on twitch and youtube replay) is a narrative-therapist who brings a look at character psychology and how that shows up in the picture. He's currently doing it on Violet and Eighty-Six. It's very interesting.

Gabriel Barott

Agree to disagree, I guess. I really don't think she "needed" him for her story to conclude. Additionally, her wanting to understand Gilbert's feelings doesn't exactly mean that she needs to romantically love him. And just because she does, that love can still be found without him being physically present, as we see throughout the duration of the show. I just don't think narratively this is a strong way to tell the story, no matter how many ways the story had set things up for it to conclude this way. If I'm being honest, my first time watching this through, I never got the feeling she had romantic feelings for him. My interpretation was that she just had relied on him for so long, and he did so many things for her, that the bond they shared was more of a father-daughter relationship. And that she wanted to understand what love is from a human standpoint.

GTB

"Additionally, her wanting to understand Gilbert's feelings doesn't exactly mean that she needs to romantically love him." As I said, she doesn't fall in love with him...in trying to understand his words, his feelings, she understands that she already felt that way about him before. These feelings are there from the start. "that the bond they shared was more of a father-daughter relationship" In the LN it's more clear that it's not. But once again...first episode of the series, Violet's words :"I've never had a family, so I don't need a new one." And think back to all the details, the way Violet talks about Gilbert, how he occupies her thoughts, troubles her. Imagine if Violet really were Gilbert's daughter. If it were that kind of love, it would be a very dysfunctional one. So, we don't have to agree. To make myself clear, I don't have a problem with those who would have liked the story to stop at ep 13 (I do), or for the ending to be different. Everyone has the right to wish for what they want. I'm fine with it. I have a problem with saying that this ending ruins Violet's journey, or that it's not coherent. This ending is exactly in thematic continuity, perfectly coherent with Violet's journey. The writing makes perfect sense. However, I find the idea of Violet realizing that she doesn't need Gilbert is precisely not at all consistent with the 13ep and the end where she makes her declaration of love. Why? Just to avoid romantic love? It would be very hard to make it coherent, and what would be the point of that direction? For what meaning? This question is very important. But that's just my opinion.

Anime world is too cruel for carlie. I know some animes that contain more dramas than violet movie. I hope she doesn't need to watch them :)

Please react to Hibike Euphonium. It was also produced by Kyoto Animation as well as violet 🥹🥹 please it’s so great too

Light Novel is better, but this movie is still very good, 8/10 for me

I finally watched the 2nd movie with you two after all these years it's been on the backburner. Glad you two loved the journey as well. I don't agree with your review Ange, but I respect your viewpoints. I can see how you hold those views. I think I would have felt very similar to you if I had seen this when I was younger as well. I do think however, that once you re-watch this after a couple years, being older, experiencing more things in life, painful and heartwarming things, you would appreciate more how realistically messy some moments were, when you had preferred it be more neatly packaged and presented; that's where I agree with Carlie when she felt the ocean scene was very realistic and not Hollywood-esque. I can see your reasonings, but once again I do think after re-watching in a few years you will appreciate the movie more. Like you said yourself, I do see yourself coming around to appreciating it more in the future. ---- Kyoto Animation is a juggernaut for those of us who followed anime in the 90s and 2000s, even 2010s of course with Violet Evergarden. So many hits they've made, and were WIDELY considered the best studio in terms of animation and directing. Then of course, they experienced a violent tragedy where they've had to spend time recovering from. Before Violet Evergarden, the go-to tearjerker anime series was also animated by KyoAni: CLANNAD. It's still worth a watch IMO, though it may be dated and lesser in comparison. But it's still great, a classic. Music is top tier as well. A Silent Voice is another one of their realistic drama movies, also a very good movie IMO. And they also animated action/comedy in Full Metal Panic!, and a LOT of romance and tearjerker series in the 2000s, all classics in their own right. Kyoto Animation also basically popularized in 2006/2007, slice-of-life and especially SOL Comedy and the genre of Cute Girls Doing Cute Things; Bocchi the ROCK!! takes a lot of inspiration from a series they animated, K-On!.... Haruhi Suzumiya was a JUGGERNAUT in the mid 2000s and early 2010s. That era's Kaguya-sama... in a manner of speaking. I'm not a massive fan of the series myself, but the movie is S tier. Definitely you two would love that movie. Incredible writing and directing and acting. But yeah, Kyoto Animation is definitely up there in pedigree, along with MAPPA, Wit Studio, BONES, Sunrise, ufotable, etc.
