Hi! Still alive! Sorry I keep dropping off the face of the earth. Depression is being rather terrible - like 3 weeks of reducing one med so I could start another turned into a month plus of waiting for a new med to get approved, and then that pill got changed out too.... It's been fucking with my writing, as one might imagine. Both my motivation and my self-confidence. I am still writing, though! And I'm hoping to share something in the near future. To that end, I wanted to do a quick poll on chapter lengths!

Keep in mind that my current plan is to write entire scenes out in advance, and then chop them up into smaller parts so that I can build a backlog and maybe even approach a schedule one of these days. As such, this is less a strict goal and more me wondering "how short is too short" when it comes to finding the perfect stopping point for a chapter.

If you want to use the last chapter I posted on Patreon as a reference, it was around 3.6 k. It could have been further split, though, first with an unknown person arriving at the door and then with... Well, the current end of the chapter. That would have been two chunks of 1.9 k and 1.7k, respectively, sort of straddling the line between "under 2,000" and "around 2,000"

Shorter chapters would mean more frequent updates, obviously, but also "mini-cliffs" - on the level of someone being at the door, and not knowing who, basically. To me, if the end of a chapter isn't wrapping up the scene as a whole then it needs to at least be a place of interest. It's partially about leaving you wanting more, but more about me not wanting to just trail off at random.

Making this post public, so that I can gather as many votes as possible.
